Chapter 6 - The Corridor of Names

The timer continued counting down.

Five minutes and forty-seven seconds.

Ethan looked at the map.

The north wing flashed red.

The central security chamber flashed white.

Two destinations.

One choice.

Charles watched him from the wheelchair.

Victor stood between two deputies.

Lily rested in Naomi’s arms near the open portrait.

The estate shook again.

Dust fell across the desk.

Ethan pointed toward the lily route.

“Go.”

Naomi hesitated.

“Ethan.”

“Get her outside.”

Lily reached for him.

“Daddy.”

He kissed her forehead.

“I will find you.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Naomi carried her toward the rear of the hidden room.

A section of paneling opened when Lily touched the painted flower beside it.

A narrow passage appeared.

Naomi entered.

Two deputies followed.

The panel closed behind them.

Ethan looked at Price.

“Take Victor to the security chamber.”

Victor smiled.

“You need me now.”

“I need you breathing.”

“That sounds almost affectionate.”

Ethan turned to Charles.

“How do I reach Elena’s father?”

Charles looked at the map.

“There is no time.”

“Tell me.”

“He was part of the Crown.”

Ethan stared at him.

“What does that have to do with the route?”

“Everything.”

Victor laughed.

“Charles is afraid you will hear what Daniel Serrano knows.”

Elena’s father had been a respected physician.

A quiet man.

He taught Ethan how to hold Lily when she was an infant.

He made terrible coffee.

He cried during Elena’s wedding toast.

Ten years earlier, police reported that he lost control of his car on a mountain road.

The vehicle burned.

His remains were identified through dental records.

Now Ethan knew how little death certificates meant inside this family.

“What does he know?” Ethan asked.

Charles closed his eyes.

Victor answered.

“He knows why Elena married you.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“She married me because she loved me.”

Victor looked almost sympathetic.

“At the end, perhaps.”

Ethan stepped toward him.

Price moved between them.

Victor continued.

“But she met you because Daniel sent her.”

The timer reached five minutes.

Ethan looked toward Charles.

“Is that true?”

His father said nothing.

That silence struck deeper than denial.

Ethan remembered the night he met Elena.

A charity gala at Whitmore Biomedical.

She had been standing near a model of a new research center.

She laughed when Ethan spilled champagne on his own sleeve.

They talked until the staff began removing tables.

For years, he had believed it was chance.

Victor watched the realization spread across his face.

“She was investigating the company.”

Charles spoke weakly.

“She was investigating me.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because her father discovered the trials.”

“What trials?”

Charles looked toward the medical tubing in his arm.

“The Crown funded experimental neurological research.”

Victor smiled coldly.

“That is the elegant version.”

“What is the real version?”

“They tested drugs on people who could not complain.”

Ethan felt nausea rise.

“Prisoners?”

“Employees.”

“Patients,” Charles added.

“Children,” Victor said.

The room went silent.

Ethan looked toward the passage where Lily had disappeared.

“What children?”

Victor tilted his head.

“You saw the underground rooms.”

Ethan moved toward him.

Price caught his shoulder.

“Stay focused.”

The timer reached four minutes and thirty seconds.

Ethan forced himself back toward the screen.

“Where is the security chamber?”

Charles pointed at the crown symbol.

“Beneath the main staircase.”

“The basement entrance is burning.”

“There is another route.”

Victor lifted his bound hands.

“I can show you.”

Ethan looked at Price.

“Bring him.”

They left Charles in the hidden room.

The old man did not protest.

Ethan followed Victor into a narrow passage behind the bookcase.

Price came behind them.

A deputy guarded the rear.

The passage descended steeply.

Emergency lights flashed red along the walls.

The timer appeared on small screens at every intersection.

Four minutes.

Victor moved quickly.

“You said Elena was sent to investigate me,” Ethan said.

“Not you.”

“Then why marry me?”

Victor looked over his shoulder.

“You were her access point.”

Ethan grabbed his coat.

“Do not turn her into one of your lies.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“She stole files from your apartment.”

“She never had access to company files.”

“You brought work home every night.”

Ethan remembered Elena sitting beside him while he reviewed contracts.

She used to fall asleep with her head against his shoulder.

Had she been reading the pages?

Watching codes?

Memorizing names?

Victor continued.

“She found proof that Whitmore Biomedical was paying doctors to falsify deaths.”

“Like Daniel’s?”

“Like Charles’s.”

Ethan released him.

The passage opened into a long corridor.

Names were carved into metal plates along both walls.

Hundreds of them.

Some were familiar.

Judges.

Executives.

Doctors.

Politicians.

Others meant nothing to him.

Each plate carried a date.

Some dates went back seventy years.

“What is this?” Price asked.

Victor looked around.

“The corridor of debts.”

Ethan touched one name.

Paul Danner.

The physician inside Charles’s coffin.

Another plate read Daniel Serrano.

Elena’s father.

Below it was Elena Cole.

Ethan stopped.

A date had been engraved beneath her name.

The night she disappeared.

Next to it was a second date.

Today.

His blood went cold.

“What does the second date mean?”

Victor followed his gaze.

“Release.”

“From what?”

Victor did not answer.

The screen above them showed three minutes and twenty seconds.

Price pushed him forward.

“Keep moving.”

They reached a circular steel door.

Victor placed his thumb against a scanner.

ACCESS DENIED.

He tried again.

DENIED.

Victor looked at Ethan.

“It changed authorization.”

Ethan placed his hand against the scanner.

The system immediately responded.

SUCCESSOR RECOGNIZED.

The door opened.

Inside was a vast security room.

Monitors covered every wall.

Some displayed rooms inside the estate.

Others showed hospitals, offices, and private homes.

Live feeds.

Hundreds of people being watched.

Ethan stared in horror.

The Crown had not only controlled the estate.

It had reached into the world beyond it.

A central console flashed red.

PURGE IN TWO MINUTES FIFTY SECONDS.

Victor moved toward it.

Price stopped him.

“Tell Ethan what to do.”

Victor looked at the controls.

“There are three authorization switches.”

“Where?”

“One here.”

He pointed to the console.

“One beneath the north wing.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Where Daniel is being held.”

“Yes.”

“And the third?”

Victor looked toward the monitors.

“Outside the estate.”

“Where?”

“Whitmore Biomedical headquarters.”

Price checked his radio again.

No signal.

Ethan looked at the countdown.

Two minutes and thirty seconds.

“It cannot be stopped from here.”

“No.”

Charles’s voice came through the room speakers.

“It can.”

Ethan looked upward.

His father appeared on one monitor.

He remained in the hidden room.

His face had grown grayer.

“You lied,” Victor said.

Charles ignored him.

“Ethan, the purge requires three confirmations.”

“Yes.”

“It can also be halted by deleting the Crown.”

Victor went still.

Price looked toward the screen.

“What does that mean?”

Charles smiled faintly.

“Everything.”

The monitor displayed a new command.

ERASE ALL NETWORKS.

RELEASE ALL ARCHIVES.

TERMINATE CROWN CONTROL.

Victor stepped forward.

“You cannot do that.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?”

“It will expose everyone.”

“That is the point.”

“It will destroy judges, hospitals, companies, governments.”

“It will destroy criminals.”

“It will destroy innocent people connected to them.”

Charles spoke through the speaker.

“Victor is right.”

Ethan looked at the screen.

“You want me to preserve this?”

“I want you to understand the cost.”

The timer reached ninety seconds.

Victor’s voice became urgent.

“If you erase the Crown, every file is released automatically.”

“To law enforcement?”

“To everyone.”

Ethan imagined medical records.

Private addresses.

Names of witnesses.

Children.

Victims.

A complete uncontrolled leak could destroy people the Crown had already harmed.

“What is the alternative?”

Charles answered.

“You become its keeper.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You planned this.”

“I planned for a successor.”

“You trapped Lily to force me.”

“No.”

“You knew Marcus would come.”

“I suspected.”

“You let Elena remain underground.”

Charles closed his eyes.

“I could not reach her.”

“You could watch hundreds of homes from this room.”

“But not the prison Marcus controlled.”

Ethan did not believe him.

The timer reached sixty seconds.

A new feed appeared.

The north-wing chamber.

An older man lay strapped to a hospital bed.

His beard was long.

His body was thin.

But Ethan recognized Daniel Serrano from old photographs.

Alive.

Beside the bed stood Dr. Adrian Vale.

His hands were no longer cuffed.

He held a syringe.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“How did Vale get there?”

Victor looked equally shocked.

Vale looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

“You have one minute, Ethan.”

His voice came through the speakers.

“Stop the purge, and Daniel lives.”

Ethan moved toward the microphone.

“How?”

“Accept full control.”

“And Elena?”

Vale smiled.

“She is already on her way here.”

Another monitor activated.

A sheriff’s ambulance moved through the north gate.

The driver wore a deputy’s uniform.

The paramedic beside Elena held a gun beneath his jacket.

Price cursed.

“They took the ambulance.”

The timer reached forty-five seconds.

Vale held the syringe above Daniel’s chest.

Victor leaned close to Ethan.

“Accept control.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You want the Crown preserved.”

“I want my family alive.”

“You mean your power.”

Victor’s eyes filled with panic.

“My son’s name is in the archives.”

Ethan froze.

Victor had never spoken of a son.

“What son?”

“Marcus.”

The room went silent.

Victor looked toward the monitor.

“He is my son.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You said he worked for you.”

“He hated me.”

“For what?”

“For leaving him inside the program.”

The countdown reached thirty seconds.

Charles spoke through the speakers.

“Choose.”

The command screen offered two options.

ACCEPT THE CROWN.

ERASE THE CROWN.

Daniel struggled against the restraints on one monitor.

Elena lay unconscious in the approaching ambulance on another.

Lily and Naomi moved through the hidden passage on a third.

Marcus appeared on a fourth.

He stood outside the estate.

No handcuffs.

No deputies.

He held a remote detonator.

Ethan looked at Price.

The sheriff’s face revealed the same realization.

Marcus had never been trying to steal the ledger.

He had been positioning every person.

Every route.

Every threat.

Marcus raised the remote toward the camera.

The countdown reached ten seconds.

Ethan placed his hand over the console.

Victor shouted.

“Do not erase it!”

Charles whispered.

“Do not become me.”

Five seconds.

Ethan pressed a command.

May you like

Every monitor went black.

Then Lily’s scream came through the speakers.
