Chapter 13 - The Fire Beneath the Truth

The floor vanished.

Ethan grabbed Elena before she disappeared into the white fire.

They fell together.

Metal beams tore past them.

Burning fragments filled the darkness.

Ethan struck a slanted surface and lost his grip.

“Elena!”

Her hand caught his wrist.

The impact nearly pulled his shoulder from its socket.

For one terrifying second, she hung beneath him above the burning chamber.

The silver drive remained clenched in her other hand.

“Let it go!” Ethan shouted.

Elena looked down at the fire.

“No!”

“It is not worth your life.”

“It is worth theirs.”

The flames illuminated her face from below.

Hundreds of victims were stored inside that drive.

Names.

Experiments.

Confessions.

Evidence.

Everything the Crown had tried to erase.

Ethan tightened his grip.

The slanted metal beneath him began to bend.

He pulled Elena upward.

She kicked against the wall.

Together, they rolled onto a narrow maintenance platform beneath the archive.

The platform shuddered.

Above them, thermite burned through the red chamber.

Molten metal dripped through the broken floor.

Ethan dragged Elena away.

A ladder descended into darkness at the far end.

Smoke filled the shaft.

“We have to go down,” he said.

Elena looked below.

“How far?”

“I don’t know.”

Another section of the archive collapsed.

White fire poured onto the platform behind them.

Ethan reached the ladder.

He started down.

Elena followed.

The shaft extended deeper than the basement.

The heat faded as they descended.

Cold air rose from below.

Ethan’s injured hands slipped against the metal.

Blood made every rung slick.

He kept moving.

The explosion above them shook the ladder.

Elena screamed.

One support bracket tore free.

The ladder swung away from the wall.

Ethan slammed against the shaft.

His vision flashed white.

“Elena?”

“I’m here.”

Her voice came from above.

The ladder continued swaying.

Below them, black water reflected the firelight.

Ethan looked down.

An underground reservoir filled the bottom of the shaft.

“We have to jump.”

Elena stared below.

“How deep is it?”

“Deep enough.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

A burning beam fell through the shaft.

It struck the ladder above Elena.

Metal snapped.

“Jump!” Ethan shouted.

He released the rungs.

Cold water swallowed him.

The impact drove the air from his lungs.

He sank into darkness.

For several seconds, he could not tell which direction led upward.

Then orange light shimmered above.

Ethan kicked toward it.

His head broke the surface.

He inhaled smoke and water.

“Elena!”

No answer.

He turned through the black reservoir.

“Elena!”

A hand emerged near the wall.

Then disappeared.

Ethan swam toward it.

He dove.

Elena’s dress had caught around a submerged metal brace.

Her body twisted beneath the water.

Her eyes were open.

Ethan reached her.

He pulled at the fabric.

It would not tear.

His lungs began burning.

Elena pushed the silver drive into his hand.

Then she pointed upward.

She wanted him to leave her.

Ethan shook his head.

He wrapped the dress around both hands and pulled.

The fabric tightened.

Elena began losing strength.

Her eyes slowly closed.

Ethan reached down and found the sharp edge of a broken bracket.

He dragged the fabric across it.

Once.

Twice.

The dress tore.

He pulled Elena free and kicked toward the surface.

They emerged together.

Elena coughed violently.

Ethan held her above the water.

The silver drive was still in his fist.

A wave moved through the reservoir as debris crashed behind them.

Elena looked toward a faint light at the far end.

“There.”

A stone ledge rose above the water.

Ethan swam toward it.

They climbed onto the narrow platform.

Elena collapsed.

Ethan rolled her onto her side.

She coughed up water.

“Stay with me.”

Her eyes opened.

“You kept the drive.”

“You told me it mattered.”

A weak smile touched her face.

“It does.”

The ceiling groaned.

The entire estate was burning above them.

Ethan looked around.

The underground reservoir appeared older than the house.

Stone arches disappeared into darkness.

A narrow tunnel led away from the water.

A thorn-covered crown had been carved above it.

Elena saw the symbol.

“This is the original passage.”

“Original to what?”

“The first Crown chamber.”

Ethan helped her stand.

They entered the tunnel.

Water ran around their ankles.

The air grew colder.

Old lamps flickered automatically as they passed.

Someone still controlled power in this part of the estate.

At the end of the passage, they reached a massive iron door.

It stood open.

Beyond it was a circular room filled with portraits.

Not family portraits.

Photographs.

Men and women from different generations stared from the walls.

Some wore military uniforms.

Some wore judicial robes.

Some stood beside presidents.

Others wore the white coats of doctors.

At the center of the room stood a long black table.

Twelve chairs surrounded it.

Eleven were empty.

Daniel Serrano sat in the twelfth.

His clothes were wet with sweat.

Blood covered one side of his face.

But he was alive.

A pistol rested on the table before him.

Ethan stepped in front of Elena.

Daniel smiled.

“You survived.”

Ethan looked toward the pistol.

“Move your hand away from it.”

Daniel placed both palms flat on the table.

“You released the archive.”

“We protected the victims.”

“You believe a filter can protect them?”

“The perpetrators are exposed.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“Some of the perpetrators believe they are victims.”

“You mean you.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

Elena stepped around Ethan.

“You put Lily in that machine.”

“I prepared her to survive.”

“You used her.”

“I used everyone.”

The admission came without shame.

Elena stared at him.

“You kept me beneath this house.”

“I kept you close.”

“You let Victor drug me.”

“He believed he was hiding you from me.”

Daniel looked amused.

“Victor was never very intelligent.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“To keep you obedient.”

Ethan moved closer.

Daniel’s eyes shifted toward him.

“You still think morality means something here.”

“It means you never touch Lily again.”

Daniel looked toward the drive.

“You brought it.”

Elena tightened her hand around Ethan’s arm.

“He wants the drive.”

Daniel smiled.

“The upload was incomplete.”

Ethan looked at the silver device.

“The system said complete.”

“The release completed.”

“The original archive did not transfer.”

“What remains?”

Daniel looked toward the portraits.

“The command identities.”

Elena’s face changed.

“The survivors.”

Daniel nodded.

“The filter protected their names.”

“As we intended.”

“Which means the command network still owns them.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You can still activate them.”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward Elena.

“She can.”

Elena went still.

Daniel continued.

“The final sequence requires Subject Seven’s bloodline.”

“You already used Lily.”

“She was only one branch.”

His eyes moved between Ethan and Elena.

“Together, you complete Isabel.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

“You brought us here.”

Daniel smiled.

“The collapsing floor led directly to the reservoir.”

“You designed the escape.”

“I designed the choice.”

Elena stepped closer to the table.

“What choice?”

Daniel pointed toward the drive.

“Erase the identities forever.”

“Or?”

“Use them.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“That is not a choice.”

“It will be.”

Daniel turned toward one of the portraits.

A young man in a military uniform stared down from the frame.

“Some members of the Crown are already moving.”

“Moving where?”

“Toward the estate.”

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

“For Lily.”

“For the archive.”

“For Charles.”

Daniel leaned back.

“The release exposed enough information to frighten every surviving branch.”

Ethan remembered the international names.

Governments.

Hospitals.

Intelligence agencies.

“The estate will be surrounded.”

“It already is.”

A monitor activated on the wall.

The image showed the Whitmore grounds.

Black vehicles lined the road beyond the gates.

Helicopters moved above the burning mansion.

Men in tactical equipment spread through the trees.

Not sheriff’s deputies.

Not firefighters.

Private forces.

Different uniforms.

Different insignias.

All converging on one location.

Elena stared at the screen.

“Where is Lily?”

Daniel’s face softened.

“Still inside the chapel.”

Ethan crossed the room.

He seized Daniel by the throat.

“You left her there?”

“Marcus took her.”

“Where?”

Daniel smiled through Ethan’s grip.

“To the cemetery.”

Ethan released him.

“Why?”

“Because Isabel’s body is buried there.”

“My mother’s body?”

“Not exactly.”

Elena stared at Daniel.

“What is buried in her grave?”

“The first archive.”

The room went silent.

Daniel pointed toward the drive.

“That device opens it.”

Ethan looked at the monitor.

The tactical teams were advancing toward the western grounds.

The family cemetery lay beyond the rose garden.

Marcus had taken Lily toward the place every branch of the Crown would soon reach.

Elena rushed toward the door.

Daniel spoke behind her.

“You will not make it through the tunnels.”

She stopped.

“Why?”

“They are sealing.”

A low mechanical sound moved through the stone.

The iron door behind Ethan began closing.

He grabbed it.

The weight forced him backward.

Elena joined him.

Together, they tried to hold the door open.

Daniel remained seated.

“You can carry the drive.”

His hand moved toward the pistol.

“Or you can carry each other.”

Ethan released the door and lunged.

Daniel grabbed the gun.

Elena seized the heavy chair beside him and struck his arm.

The pistol fired.

The bullet hit one of the portraits.

Glass shattered.

Ethan drove Daniel onto the table.

The old man fought with surprising strength.

He struck Ethan’s injured shoulder.

Pain shot down Ethan’s arm.

Daniel reached for the pistol again.

Elena kicked it across the room.

The iron door continued closing.

Ethan pulled Daniel upright.

“You are coming with us.”

Daniel laughed.

“You cannot force the Crown to follow you.”

“I don’t need the Crown.”

“You need me.”

“No.”

Ethan pushed him toward the door.

“You need to see what happens when people stop obeying.”

They reached the narrowing gap.

Elena slipped through first.

Ethan forced Daniel after her.

The old man caught the edge.

His body became trapped between the iron door and the frame.

He screamed.

Ethan pulled.

The gap narrowed around Daniel’s chest.

“Open it!” Elena shouted.

“There is no control.”

Daniel struggled for breath.

His eyes moved toward the drive.

“Use it.”

“How?”

“Press it against the crown.”

A metal emblem had been carved beside the frame.

Elena touched the drive to it.

The mechanism stopped.

Then reversed.

Ethan dragged Daniel free.

The iron door opened again.

Daniel collapsed onto the wet stone.

Elena looked at the drive.

“It is not just storage.”

Daniel coughed.

“No.”

“It is the master key.”

Ethan pulled him to his feet.

“Then you are taking us to Lily.”

They moved through the reservoir passage.

Daniel walked between them.

Above, explosions shook the estate.

When they reached the ladder shaft, burning debris blocked the way upward.

Daniel pointed toward another tunnel.

“The cemetery route.”

Ethan pushed him forward.

The passage rose gradually.

Fresh air entered from somewhere ahead.

They reached a stone staircase.

At the top stood a round hatch.

Ethan opened it.

Rain fell through the gap.

He climbed out.

The family cemetery stretched around them.

Smoke covered the sky.

The mansion burned beyond the trees.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Armed men moved between the mausoleums.

Gunfire sounded near the estate gates.

Ethan helped Elena from the hatch.

Daniel followed.

They crouched behind a marble tomb.

The name MARGARET WHITMORE had been carved across the front.

Below it were the dates of Ethan’s mother’s supposed life.

Elena touched the stone.

“Is she really here?”

Daniel shook his head.

“She died beneath the chapel.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What did Charles bury?”

“The machine that recorded her memories.”

Elena stared toward the largest mausoleum.

“Where?”

Daniel pointed.

At the far edge of the cemetery stood a white stone structure covered in black vines.

Marcus stood before it.

Lily was beside him.

Victor and Charles were there too.

Naomi and Sheriff Price crouched behind another grave.

Several armed groups surrounded the mausoleum from different directions.

No one fired.

Every weapon was pointed toward Lily.

Marcus held the brass key in one hand.

The other rested on her shoulder.

Lily saw Ethan.

“Daddy!”

Every armed man turned.

Marcus’s face changed.

He had not expected Daniel to be with them.

Daniel stepped into the open.

The tactical teams lowered their weapons slightly.

Recognition moved through the cemetery.

Some men looked afraid.

Others bowed their heads.

May you like

Daniel smiled.

Then Lily lifted a pistol and aimed it at him.
