Chapter 8 - The Bail Hearing

The Dallas County courtroom smelled of industrial floor wax, damp wool, and institutional misery.

Grant shuffled into the prisoner box in bright orange county scrubs, his wrists and ankles linked by heavy chain links that clinked with every agonizing step. He looked around wildly, his bloodshot eyes scanning the gallery until they landed on me.

I sat in the front row directly behind the prosecutor’s bench, flanked by Arthur Vance and Marcus Hayes. I didn't flinch. I held his gaze with the steady calm of a person watching an insect under glass.

Beside the defense table stood Julian Vance-trained corporate turned criminal defense lawyer Bradley Shaw—a man Grant had scrambled to retain using the last remaining funds from his mother’s retirement savings.

"Your Honor," Shaw argued, adjusting his glasses. "Mr. Whitmore is a prominent Dallas entrepreneur with zero prior convictions. The domestic dispute in question is an isolated, highly emotional incident arising from pending divorce proceedings. We request an unsecured bond of fifty thousand dollars."

Judge Evelyn Rivera adjusted her reading glasses and glanced at the thick binder submitted by the state.

"An isolated incident, Mr. Shaw?" Judge Rivera’s voice was as sharp as broken glass. "The court has reviewed forensic photographs of Mrs. Vance-Whitmore taken within hours of the alleged assault, documenting six distinct blunt-force impacts and a spinal contusion caused by blunt trauma against a marble fixture. Furthermore, the defendant attempted to transfer one million dollars out of frozen corporate accounts while under an active restraining order."

Grant leaned forward, his voice cracking through the quiet room. "Your Honor, that money belongs to my company! My wife is colluding with Vance Global to execute a hostile takeover—"

"Silence your client, Mr. Shaw," Judge Rivera warned, her gavel hovering. "Or I will hold him in contempt before we even address the indictment."

Shaw grabbed Grant’s orange sleeve, yanking him back into his chair with a harsh whisper.

The state prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, the defendant possesses significant international contacts, has attempted to liquidate corporate capital during an active audit, and represents a clear and ongoing physical threat to the victim. The state requests bond be set at two million dollars, full cash surrender, accompanied by a Level 1 protective order and an ankle monitor upon release."

Judge Rivera looked directly at Grant, her expression utterly cold.

"Bond is set at two million dollars, cash or corporate surety. If posted, the defendant will surrender his passport, submit to continuous GPS monitoring, and maintain a minimum distance of one thousand yards from Mrs. Claire Vance and all Vance corporate facilities. Next case."

Bang.

The gavel cracked down like a gunshot.

Grant lunged toward the gallery railing, his chains rattling furiously as two bailiffs instantly grabbed his arms.

"Claire!" he screamed, spit flying from his lips. "You can't do this to me! You’re my wife! Talk to your father! Claire!"

I didn't blink. I didn't say a single word. I simply stood up, smoothed the lapels of my jacket, and walked out of the courtroom with my father, leaving Grant’s frantic screams echoing down the marble hallway behind us.
