Chapter 10 - The Foreclosure of a Legacy

Friday morning brought the final collapse of Whitmore Tech Logistics.

With the API shut down, the Apex funding completely terminated, and Grant sitting in a jail cell unable to meet the two-million-dollar cash bail, the company’s remaining creditors moved in like wolves.

At 10:00 AM, Vance Global Logistics exercised its primary senior debt covenants, foreclosing on the entirety of Whitmore Tech’s intellectual property, proprietary fleet tracking patents, and downtown real estate leases.

I walked into the top floor of Whitmore Tower. The neon sign bearing Grant’s name had already been powered down.

A crew of movers was packing the executive offices into unmarked cardboard boxes.

Greg Miller, the former CFO who had agreed to serve as the interim liquidator, met me at the glass entryway with a clipboard in hand.

"Everything has been transitioned to Vance enterprise servers, Claire," Greg said, handing me the digital transfer keys. "The Whitmore brand is officially dissolved. The company is defunct."

I stepped into Grant’s old corner office. The massive mahogany desk where he used to sit and dismiss my family’s legacy was cleared bare.

On the polished floor by the window lay a single item the movers had missed: a small, silver desk plaque engraved with Grant’s favorite motto: To The Victor Belong The Spoils.

I picked it up, feeling the cold weight of the metal in my hand.

I walked over to the wastebasket by the door and dropped it inside. It landed with a dull, hollow thud.

Behind me, the elevator doors chimed open.

My father stepped onto the floor, walking over to stand beside me as we looked out over the glittering expanse of Dallas below.

"It’s done, Claire," Arthur Vance said quietly.

"Not quite," I replied, watching the clouds finally part to let the Texas sun break over the glass towers. "We still have the bankruptcy auction on Monday."
