Chapter 12 - The Divorce Deposition

The formal divorce deposition took place in the grand conference room of Hayes & Sterling on the fiftieth floor of the Fountain Place tower.

Grant sat across from me, flanked by his exhausted court-appointed attorney. On the table between us sat a stack of paperwork six inches thick.

"We have reached a total financial settlement," Marcus Hayes announced, pressing the record button on the digital stenographer. "Under the terms of the post-foreclosure audit, Mr. Grant Whitmore has zero remaining equity in any commercial or residential assets."

"I have a right to fifty percent of the Beverly Drive estate under Texas community property rules!" Grant yelled, slamming his hand onto the mahogany table.

"The Beverly Drive mansion was acquired with ancestral trust funds prior to the marriage and maintained through Vance capital infusions," Marcus countered coolly, sliding a deed certified by the state land registry across the table. "You never owned a single brick of that house, Mr. Whitmore."

Grant grabbed the papers, his eyes wildly scanning the clauses, searching for a loophole, a technicality, any shred of leverage.

"What about my personal bank accounts?" Grant choked out. "My retirement fund?"

"Seized under the state restitution order to pay for the forensic accounting fees and Mrs. Vance’s medical expenses," Marcus replied.

Grant dropped the papers. His hands were shaking uncontrollably. He looked across the table at me, tears of pure defeat finally spilling down his hollow cheeks.

"Claire... please," he whispered, his voice completely broken. "I have thirty-two dollars in my checking account. I'm living in a run-down studio apartment in Oak Cliff. I don't have a car. I don't have a job. No firm in Dallas will even answer my emails. How am I supposed to live?"

"You'll live exactly the way you told me to live when you threw me onto the sidewalk in the rain," I replied, my voice steady, calm, and final.

I slid the final divorce decree toward him along with a standard black pen.

"Sign the papers, Grant. Or we proceed directly to trial on Monday morning, where Vanessa Cole is scheduled to testify as the state's star witness."

Grant’s eyes widened at the mention of Vanessa’s name. The realization hit him like a physical blow: every single bridge he had ever crossed was burned to ash behind him.

With trembling fingers, Grant took the pen.

He signed the final page, the ink scratching harshly against the paper.

I took the document, handed it to Marcus, and stood up from the table.
