Chapter 5 - The Masterclass

While Grant was watching his company disintegrate, I was sitting in the high-backed leather chair of the Vance Global corner office, overlooking the Dallas skyline.
My face still throbbed beneath the light foundation the makeup artist had applied, but my back was straight. In front of me sat a hot cup of black tea and a digital dossier containing every transaction Grant had made over the last twenty-four months.
The door opened, and Marcus Hayes walked in, holding two printed documents.
"The freeze is fully operational," Marcus said, placing the papers before me. "He tried to siphon a million dollars out of Whitmore Tech thirty minutes ago. The automated hold flagged it immediately."
"Has he tried to contact me?" I asked calmly.
"Seventeen missed calls to your personal number. Five to your assistant. Two voicemails left on your fatherâs executive line." Marcus pulled out his phone. "Would you like to hear the latest one?"
I nodded once.
Marcus hit play. Grantâs voice filled the room, crackling through the speaker.
"Claire... baby, please. We need to talk. Last night was a huge misunderstanding. The pressure from the Apex deal was making me crazy, you know how stressed I get! We can work this out. Please tell your dad to turn the servers back on. Weâre losing hundreds of thousands of dollars an hour! Claire, call me! Don't throw our five years away over a fight!"
The recording ended.
I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel vindication. I felt an icy, crystalline clarity.
"He doesn't apologize for hitting me," I said softly. "He apologizes because the servers are off."
"Narcissists don't feel remorse, Claire," Arthur Vance said, walking in from the adjoining boardroom. "They only feel consequences."
Arthur pulled up a chair across from me. "Marcus, what is the status of the Highland Park property?"
"The deed to the Beverly Drive mansion was purchased under the Vance Family Trust in 2019," Marcus replied with a clinical grin. "Grant believed he was a co-owner because his name was on the decorative mortgage certificate, but the underlying title belongs entirely to Claire. He is, legally speaking, a trespasser."
"And Vanessa Cole?" I asked, looking at Marcus.
"Miss Cole is currently at the mansion," Marcus said, checking his watch. "Our private security team reports she left Whitmore Tower an hour ago to pack her things before the freeze hit her personal accounts."

I stood up, smoothing the front of my tailored black blazer.
"Order the cars, Marcus," I said, picking up my keys. "I want my pearl earrings back."
