Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 8:45 AM, Grant Whitmore stepped out of the private elevator onto the forty-second floor of the Whitmore Tower in downtown Dallas. He was whistling softly, adjusting the cuff links on his bespoke charcoal suit.

Vanessa was already at his side, dressed in a sharp designer skirt suit, her blonde hair pinned back to reveal the South Sea pearl earrings she had refused to take off.

"Did you call the locksmith about the Beverly Drive house?" Grant asked, turning to his assistant at the reception desk.

"Yes, Mr. Whitmore," the assistant stammered, looking pale. "They... they arrived at seven."

"Good. If Claire tries to send anyone for her things, have security escort them off the property immediately." Grant smirked, brushing a speck of lint from his lapel. "She’ll be crawling back by tomorrow evening once she realizes her credit cards are frozen."

"Grant," Vanessa purred, leaning in to adjust his tie. "Don't stress about her. Today is about the Apex deal. Thirty-five million dollars. You’re going to be on the cover of Forbes."

Grant smiled, leaning down to kiss her cheek. "You're right, baby. Let's go make history."

He pushed open the double glass doors of the main boardroom with supreme confidence.

The room was packed, but the atmosphere inside wasn't the triumphant pre-closing celebration he expected. The air was frigid.

Sitting at the far end of the boardroom table were three men in dark suits from Apex Capital, led by Donald Sterling. Beside them sat Whitmore Tech's Chief Financial Officer, Greg Miller, whose forehead was drenched in sweat.

"Donald!" Grant boomed, extending a hand as he walked in. "Fantastic morning for a partnership. Are the revised term sheets ready for signature?"

Donald Sterling didn't stand up. He didn't reach out to shake Grant’s hand. He simply leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Sit down, Grant," Donald said flatly.

Grant’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He pulled out the leather executive chair at the head of the table and sat down, motioning for Vanessa to take the seat beside him.

"Is there an issue with the valuation?" Grant asked, his tone shifting into defensive salesman mode. "Because our user acquisition metrics over Q3 speak for themselves—"

"Your servers are crashing, Grant," Greg, the CFO, interrupted, his voice shaking.

Grant frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"At 6:01 this morning, Vance Global Logistics revoked Whitmore Tech's API access tokens," Greg said, staring at his laptop screen in sheer panic. "They shut down the enterprise data pipeline. Our tracking algorithms just went dark across seventy-thousand regional freight units."

Grant let out a sharp, dismissive laugh. "That's just Arthur Vance throwing a tantrum because Claire and I had a domestic disagreement last night. It's personal noise. I’ll make a phone call, smooth it over with the old man, and the servers will be back online by lunch."

"You won't be making that call," Donald Sterling said, sliding a thick manila folder across the polished wood table.

The folder landed right in front of Grant.

"What is this?" Grant asked, his brow furrowing.

"Open it," Donald commanded.

Grant flipped open the cover.

High-resolution color photographs stared back at him. Claire’s face, bruised and swollen. The deep purple contusions along her jawline. The medical report stamped by Dallas Presbyterian's chief trauma specialist.

Vanessa leaned over to look, letting out a sharp gasp.

"Apex Capital does not partner with domestic abusers, Mr. Whitmore," Donald said, his voice ringing with absolute disgust. "And we certainly don't invest thirty-five million dollars into companies whose primary intellectual property relies on a supplier they just alienated beyond repair."

"Donald, wait—listen to me," Grant stammered, his face turning an ash-gray color. "This is a setup. Claire fell! She was hysterical, she attacked me, I was defending myself—"

"Save it for the grand jury," Donald said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Apex Capital is officially terminating all investment negotiations. Furthermore, under the terms of our bridge loan, we are calling in the five-million-dollar advance due within forty-eight hours."

May you like

"Forty-eight hours?!" Grant yelled, jumping to his feet. "You can't do that!"

"We can, and we did," Donald said, walking toward the boardroom doors. He paused at the exit, looking directly at Vanessa. "And by the way, Miss Cole... those earrings look ridiculous on you."
