Chapter 9 - The Handcuffs Click

The silence in the Palmer House ballroom shattered into absolute, uncontrolled bedlam.
Flashbulbs exploded in blinding waves as every investigative journalist, socialite with a smartphone, and local news crew lunged forward. Shouted questions overlapped in a deafening roar:
"Mr. Vance, is that your wife?!"
"Mrs. Vance, did you crush your maid's hand?!"
"Did you attempt to murder your unborn child for an inheritance?!"
Victoria Vance backed away frantically, her heel catching on the hem of her gown. She tumbled to the floor, her diamond tiara slipping sideways, knocking over a tower of crystal champagne flutes that shattered around her in a cascade of sparkling wine and glass.
"Get them away from me!" Victoria screamed, crawling across the soaked carpet like a cornered animal. "Daniel, call the private security team! Call the governor!"
Daniel didn't move. He stood frozen in the center of the ballroom floor, his eyes bulging, his chest hitching as if all the oxygen had been vacuumed out of the room. He stared up at Clara on the stage.
"You're dead..." Daniel wheezed, blood draining entirely from his face until his skin looked like wet chalk. "I saw the clinic fire report... I saw the death certificates..."
"You saw what Frank and Julian paid your corrupt coroner to show you, Daniel," Clara said, stepping down the stage stairs with slow, deliberate grace. The crowd parted for her like the Red Sea, guests whispering in awe and terror. "You were so eager to grab my grandfatherâs trust fund that you didn't even bother to verify the ashes. Greed made you stupid."
The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom burst open with a resounding bang.
A squad of ten uniform officers, flanked by four federal agents wearing dark suits and tactical badges, marched into the room. At the front was Special Agent Marcus VanceâDanielâs estranged first cousin, whom Victoria had driven out of the family firm a decade earlier.
"Daniel Vance! Victoria Vance!" Agent Marcus announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Federal warrants for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"Marcus, wait!" Daniel stammered, raising his trembling hands as the agents closed in around him. "This is a private family dispute! Itâs a corporate misunderstanding! We can settle this!"
"Save it for the grand jury, Daniel," Marcus said with cold satisfaction, grabbing Danielâs wrist, twisting his arm behind his back, and snapping the steel cuffs shut with a sharp, heavy CLICK.
Victoria shrieked as two female officers hoisted her up from the floor by her armpits, pinning her arms behind her back despite her spitting and kicking. "I am a Vance! You cannot touch me! My lawyers will have your badges by sunrise!"
"Your lawyers just resigned, Mrs. Vance," Julian Blackwood announced from the stage, holding up a fresh tablet. "Thirty seconds ago, your entire legal counsel terminated their representation after reviewing the Belize transaction records."
As the officers dragged Daniel past Clara toward the ballroom exit, Daniel stopped, straining against the officer's grip, his bloodshot eyes locking onto Clara's face.
"Where is he?" Daniel rasped, a sickening mixture of rage and desperation in his voice. "Where is my son?!"

Clara looked at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
"He will never know your name, Daniel," Clara said quietly. "To him, you are nothing more than a bad dream that ended before he woke up."
