Chapter 7 - The Gala of Vipers

The Palmer House Grand Ballroom was a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, and high-society predators. Chicago's elite mingled over flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon, their laughter floating above the delicate melodies of a live string quartet.

Daniel Vance stood near the center stage, clutching a glass of scotch, his eyes darting frantically across every entrance. His skin was pale, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. Beside him, Victoria was plastered in heavy makeup, smiling tightly at local politicians while gripping her silver clutch like a weapon.

"Stop looking like a cornered animal, Daniel," Victoria murmured through locked teeth, keeping her pageant smile intact. "The press is watching. If the Tribune gets a photo of you sweating through your tuxedo, the stock opens down five percent on rumors alone."

"She’s here, Mother," Daniel whispered hoarsely. "I can feel it. The key was gone. The note was fresh. She’s playing with us."

"Pull yourself together! We have security on every door. If that Cross woman shows up, my private investigators will escort her into a quiet room in the basement. We'll find out who hired her before midnight."

The ballroom suddenly fell into a collective hush as the grand entrance doors swung open.

Clara entered on the arm of Julian Blackwood.

She wore a backless crimson silk gown that hugged every curve of her figure, exposing the smooth skin of her back where deep surgical scars had been masterfully covered by an intricate, temporary gold-leaf tattoo of a phoenix rising through thorns. Her diamond choker caught the light of the chandeliers, sparkling with blinding brilliance.

Every head in the room turned. The whispers started immediately.

"Who is that with Blackwood?"

"Is that the auditor from London?"

"My God, she looks like royalty..."

Daniel’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the polished parquet floor. Scotch splashed across his patent leather shoes, but he didn't even look down. His jaw fell open, his eyes glued to the woman walking toward him with the poise of an empress.

"Good evening, Daniel," Clara said, coming to a stop just three feet from him, her arm resting gracefully on Julian’s tuxedo sleeve. "You seem surprised to see me. I told you I’d be here for the champagne toast."

"Evelyn..." Daniel managed to choke out, his voice cracking. "You... you look..."

"Alive?" Clara offered a dazzling, lethal smile. "Healthy? Powerful? Which word were you searching for, Daniel?"

Victoria stepped forward, her eyes blazing with pure malice. "Miss Cross. Or whoever you are. You have a lot of nerve showing your face here after the slanderous accusations you made in our boardroom."

"Accusations, Mrs. Vance?" Julian Blackwood chimed in, his British drawl cutting through the room with effortless contempt. "I wouldn't call certified wire transfer logs and Swiss deposit records 'accusations.' In the financial sector, we call those 'smoking guns.'"

"What do you want?" Daniel whispered, stepping closer to Clara, his chest heaving, his facade completely crumbling. "Money? How much? Name your price and get out of my city!"

Clara took a step forward, leaning her face inches from Daniel's ear. The scent of her vanilla perfume hit him—the exact same scent Clara had worn on their wedding night.

"I don't want your money, Daniel," Clara whispered into his ear, her voice dropping into the familiar, sweet tone she had used when she loved him. "I want your name. I want your pride. And in five minutes... I'm going to take your freedom."

Before Daniel could react, Clara pulled back, raised her champagne flute toward the stage, and nodded at the audiovisual technician standing near the massive projector screens.
