Chapter 4 - The Trojan Horse

The roar of Chicago traffic hummed eighteen stories below the glass-walled penthouse of Blackwood Capital. Inside, the only sound was the steady, rhythmic tapping of Julian Blackwood’s fountain pen against a mahogany desk. He looked across the room at Clara, whose gaze remained fixed on the live ticker tape of Vance Enterprises' tumbling stock.

"You realize what you're asking for, Clara?" Julian leaned forward, his suit impeccably tailored, his eyes sharp as polished slate. "If we introduce you as Evelyn Cross, the lead acquisition auditor for Blackwood Capital, Daniel won't just look at your credentials. He will study your face, your breath, your pulse. A man who thinks he murdered his wife tends to remember her ghost."

"Daniel never looked at my face, Julian," Clara replied, her voice smooth, chillingly calm. She smoothed the lapels of her charcoal power suit. Her once-long auburn hair was now cut into a sharp, asymmetrical black bob. Heavy amber contact lenses masked the striking hazel of her eyes, and a subtle prosthetic touch along her cheekbone had altered the soft symmetry Daniel once dismissed as weak. "Daniel looked at my bank account, my grandfather’s trust documents, and the reflection of his own ego. To him, women are decorative appliances. If you give an appliance a different coat of paint and a sharper tongue, he won’t recognize it."

Julian smiled thinly. "And your voice?"

"I spent six months with a vocal coach learning mid-Atlantic cadence and dropping my register an entire octave," Clara said, leaning her hands on his desk. "Test me."

Julian pulled open his desk drawer and slid a heavy crimson folder toward her. "Tomorrow morning at nine. Vance Enterprises board room. Daniel is presenting the financial projections for the Sterling Horizon buyout. He needs Blackwood Capital’s bridge loan of two hundred million dollars to finalize the purchase. Without our cash, his company goes into technical default within forty-eight hours because he leveraged his core assets to buy the initial shares."

"He gambled the farm," Clara whispered, opening the file. "Classic Daniel. Arrogant, reckless, completely dependent on brute force."

"You will be our sole representative at the table," Julian continued, watching her intently. "You will inspect his shell corporations. You will demand forensic access to his offshore holdings in Belize. If you flinch, if you stammer, if you show one second of hesitation, he will tear you apart."

"He won't get the chance," Clara said.

The following morning at precisely 8:55 AM, the glass double doors of Vance Enterprises swung open. Clara walked through the lobby with an aura of unyielding authority, her heels clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble floor—the exact same marble Daniel had installed with her family's trust fund.

Two junior executives scrambled to hold the boardroom door for her. Inside sat the board of directors, looking nervous and exhausted. At the head of the long oak table sat Daniel Vance.

He looked older, his face slightly lined with stress, but he wore the same smirking air of untouchable entitlement. Beside him sat Victoria Vance, draped in pearl necklaces, her cold eyes scanning Clara the moment she crossed the threshold.

Clara felt a momentary spike of raw adrenaline—the ghost of the falling balcony, the agonizing snap of the curtain, the freezing rain—but she swallowed the rage instantly, locking it behind a facade of pure ice.

"Gentlemen. Mrs. Vance," Clara announced, her new voice crisp, clipped, and completely alien to the trembling girl they had tossed into the abyss. "I am Evelyn Cross. Blackwood Capital does not waste time on pleasantries. Let’s look at your books."

Daniel stood up, offering his hand with a confident, predatory smile. "Miss Cross. Julian told me he was sending his sharpest mind. I didn't realize she would be so captivating."

Clara looked down at his outstretched hand—the very hand that had gripped the knife and sliced the curtain above her pregnant belly. She didn't take it. Instead, she set her leather briefcase down on the polished wood and pulled out a stack of audit reports.

"Save the charm for the shareholders, Mr. Vance," Clara said, staring right into his eyes without blinking. "I’m here to find out why twelve million dollars vanished from your third-quarter capital reserve account."

Victoria’s posture stiffened immediately. Daniel’s hand hung awkwardly in the air for half a second before he pulled it back, his smile turning brittle.

"An accounting realignment, Miss Cross," Daniel said, his jaw tightening. "Completely routine."

"Embezzlement into an unlisted shell company in Saint Kitts is rarely described as 'routine' by federal regulators, Mr. Vance," Clara replied coldly, tossing a single balance sheet onto the table. "You have twenty-four hours to explain this discrepancy, or Blackwood Capital pulls the loan and notifies the SEC."

The entire room went dead silent. Victoria stared at Clara, her eyes narrowing in sudden, suspicious calculation.

May you like

"Have we met before, Miss Cross?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Your posture... looks remarkably familiar."

Clara leaned forward, resting her palms on the table, looking directly into the old monster's eyes. "I assure you, Mrs. Vance... if we had met before, you would definitely remember it."
