Chapter 5 - The Cracks in the Armor

The boardroom air was thick with suffocating tension. Daniel leaned over the table, staring at the financial sheet Clara had dropped. His hands, though manicured and steady, betrayed a microscopic tremor as he scanned the offshore routing codes.

"Where did you get these documents?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh rasp. "These are internal private ledger drafts. They aren't authorized for external review."

"When you ask Blackwood Capital for two hundred million dollars, Mr. Vance, your entire financial history becomes our private reading material," Clara replied, sliding into the executive chair directly across from him. She crossed her legs deliberately, projecting total control. "Did you honestly believe Julian Blackwood writes nine-figure checks without peeling back every layer of your fraudulent paint?"

Victoria Vance stood up abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor with an irritating shriek. "How dare you speak to my son like that in his own boardroom! This company has stood for three generations!"

"And it will fall in three days if the Securities and Exchange Commission sees what I'm looking at," Clara fired back, not even bothering to glance up at the matriarch. She pulled a gold pen from her blazer pocket, clicking it once. The sharp click echoed off the glass walls. "Twelve million dollars wired to an entity called 'L.V. Holdings' in the Caribbean. The account was created three days after the tragic... untimely demise of your late wife, Clara Vance."

The name hit the room like a detonated grenade. Several board members shifted uncomfortably, exchanging uneasy glances.

Daniel’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. "My late wife has nothing to do with this transaction, Miss Cross. That trust was liquidated under the lawful provisions of her estate settlement."

"Really?" Clara raised an eyebrow, a mocking smirk playing on her lips. "Because according to the probate registry, the Vance trust required a surviving heir or a verified five-year term of marriage before full asset transfer. Your wife passed away six months before the five-year mark. And her unborn child was pronounced deceased alongside her."

"The coroner issued the final certificates," Victoria snapped, stepping closer to Clara, her perfume heavy, suffocating, smelling of gardenias and rot. "The probate court approved the release. It is completely legal."

"Coroners can be purchased, Mrs. Vance," Clara whispered, leaning in so close that Victoria could see the golden flecks in her contact lenses. "Especially in small rural districts where a hundred-thousand-dollar donation builds a brand new autopsy wing."

Victoria flinched. The color drained from her powdered cheeks. For a split second, sheer terror flashed behind the old woman's eyes. She leaned back, clutching her pearl necklace, her breath shallow.

Daniel slammed his open palm onto the mahogany table. "Enough! We are not on trial here! You either approve the bridge loan terms by five o'clock today, or I take Sterling Horizon to foreign sovereign funds. I have five different investors waiting in the lobby!"

"No, you don't," Clara said softly, picking up her leather portfolio and standing up with effortless grace. She smoothed her blazer. "Foreign funds require an unconditional audit clearance certificate. And Blackwood Capital holds the exclusive first-refusal rights on your senior debt. You can't sneeze in this market without our permission, Daniel."

She used his first name with deliberate, venomous familiarity. Daniel’s eyes widened, a flicker of bewildered recognition fighting through his rage.

"Who the hell are you?" Daniel growled, stepping around the table toward her. "Why are you doing this?"

"I’m the woman holding your leash," Clara said, stepping past him toward the boardroom exit. She paused at the heavy double doors, looking back over her shoulder with a razor-thin smile. "I'll be at the charity gala tomorrow night at the Palmer House. Have the unredacted ledgers for L.V. Holdings in my hands before the champagne toast. If they aren't there... your stock opens at zero on Monday morning."

Clara walked out, leaving Daniel trembling in fury, smashing his crystal water glass against the wall.

As she entered the elevator and the doors slid shut, Clara leaned against the mirrored wall, her hands shaking violently. She pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed.

"Frank?"

"I'm here, kid," Frank's gruff voice answered instantly. "How did it go?"

"The hook is set," Clara whispered, watching her own reflection—the cold, sharp eyes that no longer resembled the girl who had cried on that balcony. "Daniel is panicking. He’s going to move the money out of the Caribbean accounts tonight to cover his tracks."

"And when he accesses the server?"

"Your wiretap will capture his private encryption keys," Clara said, her voice dropping into a lethal murmur. "Tell Maria to get Leo ready. We're moving to phase two."
