Chapter 3 - The Shadow Alliance

Six months later, inside a dimly lit loft in downtown Chicago, Clara stood before a wall covered in surveillance photos, financial statements, and architectural blueprints of Vance Enterprises.
Her hair was cut into a sharp, chin-length bob, dyed raven black. The sweet, pastel-wearing girl from the suburbs had vanished. In her place stood a woman with razor-sharp cheekbones, cold gray eyes, and a posture forged from months of grueling physical therapy.
In the corner of the room, Maria sat in a rocking chair, softly humming a lullaby as she fed baby Leo his bottle.
"Daniel's hedge fund is about to close the biggest acquisition of his career," Frank said, slamming a thick folder onto the wooden desk. "Heâs trying to buy out Sterling Horizonâa green logistics giant. If the deal goes through next Friday, his net worth triples. Heâll be untouchable."
"Who's financing the buyout?" Clara asked without turning around.
"A private equity firm out of London called Blackwood Capital," Frank replied. "The managing partner is Julian Blackwood. Old money, ruthless, and he hates Danielâs guts. Word on the street is Danielâs mother Victoria tried to screw Julianâs father out of a real estate deal twenty years ago."
Clara turned around, her eyes locked on the photo of Julian Blackwoodâa striking man in his late thirties with piercing blue eyes and a scar running along his jawline.
"Julian is looking for an insider," Clara murmured. "Someone who knows the hidden liabilities in the Vance balance sheets."
"You know where Daniel hid the off-shore accounts?" Frank raised an eyebrow.
"Daniel thought I was an idiot who only read fashion magazines," Clara said with a dark smirk. "He had me sign dozens of blind trusts over three years. I copied every serial number, every Cayman routing code, and kept them in a safety deposit box he never knew existed."
The next evening, Clara walked into the private lounge of the Peninsula Hotel wearing an emerald backless evening gown that subtly concealed the faint surgical scars on her shoulder.
Julian Blackwood sat alone at a corner booth, sipping scotch, flanked by two security guards. When Clara approached, the guards moved to intercept her, but Julian raised a single hand, his gaze fixed on her face.
"You look like a ghost, miss," Julian said, his British accent laced with dangerous amusement. "Or perhaps a dead heiress who forgot to stay in her grave."
Clara pulled out a velvet-lined chair and sat down opposite him, unbothered by the guards.
"I'm no heiress, Mr. Blackwood," Clara said, leaning in, her voice silky and lethal. "I'm the executioner who's going to help you rip Daniel Vance apart piece by piece."

Julian stared at her for five long seconds before a slow, genuine smile spread across his face. He set his glass down.
"Tell me what you have, Clara. And don't leave out a single bloody detail."
