Chapter 3: The Daughter Who Never Existed
I stared at the photograph until the child’s face blurred.
“She isn’t real,” I said.
Officer Grant didn’t look away.
“She was born five years before you.”
“My parents only had two daughters. Vanessa and me.”
“That’s what they told you.”
Marcus pulled the file closer.
The photograph showed a little girl standing beside the same backyard shed. Her hair was tied with a yellow ribbon.
The same ribbon found inside the metal box.
“What happened to her?” Marcus asked.
Officer Grant’s voice became quieter.
“Your parents claimed she vanished during a neighborhood block party. They said the back gate had been left open.”
My mouth went dry.
“Was she found?”
“No.”
A knock sounded at the door.
A hospital social worker entered, followed by Detective Elena Ruiz from the county major crimes unit.
Ruiz placed a tablet on the table.
“We recovered security footage from a house across the alley.”
The screen showed my parents’ driveway at 5:11 that morning.
My father appeared first.
He carried something wrapped in a purple blanket.
My daughter’s blanket.
My mother walked behind him carrying a black garbage bag.
Then Vanessa entered the frame.
She opened the dumpster lid.
Even without sound, I could see her laughing.
I couldn’t breathe.
Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.
“Play it again.”
Ruiz didn’t.
“There’s more.”
The footage showed my father lifting Lily’s body.
My mother checked the street.
Vanessa held the lid open.
Together, they placed my child inside.
Then my father threw garbage bags over her.
My scream came from somewhere beneath language.
Marcus punched the wall.
Officer Grant stepped between him and the door.
“They’re under arrest,” Ruiz said. “All three.”
“Why?” I demanded. “Why would they do this?”
Ruiz exchanged a look with Grant.
“We found documents inside the locked box. Adoption records. Medical files. Payments to a private clinic.”
She paused.
“And a birth certificate.”
She slid a photocopy toward me.
Lily’s name appeared at the top.
But under “Biological Mother,” my name was missing.
