Chapter 15: Marcus’s Debt

Every officer looked at Marcus.

He stood beside the broken door, breathing hard.

“What is he talking about?” I asked.

Marcus’s face told me before his mouth did.

“There’s something I should have told you.”

My father laughed again.

Marcus had borrowed money from him.

Two years earlier, Lily needed surgery to correct a congenital heart defect.

Insurance covered most of it, but not everything.

I remembered Marcus working nights.

Selling his motorcycle.

Taking every extra shift.

What I didn’t know was that the final twenty thousand dollars came from my father.

“He said it was a loan,” Marcus explained. “He made me sign an agreement.”

My father’s attorney had later added pages.

Those pages claimed Marcus knew about the plan to transfer Lily’s custody.

“That’s a lie,” Marcus said.

But the document carried his signature.

My father wanted to destroy the one person who had protected us.

Detective Ruiz examined the papers.

“The signature may be real, but the page numbers don’t match.”

My father’s smile faded.

Marcus had kept every email.

Every text.

Every bank transfer.

The original agreement was still stored in cloud backup.

It contained nothing about custody.

My father’s forgery became another charge.

But Marcus still looked ashamed.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I thought you would feel like you owed them.”

I looked toward Lily, wrapped in a blanket inside the ambulance.

“We never owed them anything.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know that now.”

The betrayal hurt, but it was not the same as what my family had done.

Marcus had hidden a debt to save my daughter.

My parents had hidden a conspiracy to steal her.

I took his hand.

“No more secrets.”

“No more,” he promised.

Then Detective Ruiz received another call.

Thomas Whitmore had made a deal.

He would testify against my parents and Dr. Reed.

In exchange, he wanted protection.

He claimed Vanessa was preparing to blame everything on my mother.

But Vanessa had one piece of evidence no one else possessed.

A video recorded the night Grace disappeared.

And it showed who had actually pushed Evelyn into the lake.

May you like

It wasn’t my grandfather.

It was my father.
