Chapter 17: The Trial Begins

The trial began nine months later.
The prosecution charged my father with attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, unlawful imprisonment, and the attempted murder of Evelyn decades earlier.
My mother faced many of the same charges.
Vanessa accepted a plea deal and agreed to testify.
Dr. Reed admitted falsifying medical records and identity documents.
Thomas testified about the hidden financial network.
The courtroom remained packed every day.
Reporters called it the Whitmore Family Conspiracy.
But to me, it was Lily’s case.
She was the reason the truth survived.
The defense attacked me first.
They called me an unstable teenage mother.
They displayed photographs of our small apartment.
They showed overdue bills.
They questioned why I had stayed with my parents before the engagement party.
Then Marcus testified.
He described finding Lily inside the dumpster.
He played the 911 recording.
His voice filled the courtroom.
“She’s breathing... but barely.”
My mother looked down.
My father stared straight ahead.
When Sarah took the stand, the courtroom changed.
She described the basement.
The medication.
The institution.
The years without a name.
The defense attorney suggested her memories were unreliable.
Sarah opened her hand.
Inside was the yellow ribbon.
“I remember this.”
Then prosecutors played the cassette recording.
My father’s younger voice echoed through the courtroom.
“Then she can disappear.”
My father finally reacted.
He leaned toward his attorney and whispered frantically.
The jury watched him.
Vanessa testified next.
She admitted drugging Lily’s milk.
She admitted opening the dumpster.
She admitted helping falsify the custody documents.
Then the prosecutor asked who ordered Lily’s death.
Vanessa looked toward our father.
“He did.”
My father stood.
“She is lying!”
The judge ordered him to sit.
He refused.
Bailiffs moved toward him.
Then he pointed at my mother.
“She planned everything!”
My mother slowly turned toward him.
Twenty-seven years of loyalty vanished in one second.
She smiled.

Then she said, clearly enough for every juror to hear:
“Robert killed his own father too.”
