Chapter 16: Vanessa’s Bargain

Vanessa requested to speak with me before making a formal statement.
I entered the jail interview room alone.
She looked different without makeup.
Smaller.
Older.
But her eyes were still sharp.
“You always win,” she said.
“This isn’t winning.”
“You have Marcus. Lily. Now Grace. Even Grandma Evelyn.”
“You had a daughter who loved you.”
Vanessa looked away.
Emma had refused contact with her.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“Immunity.”
“You drugged Lily.”
“I followed instructions.”
“You opened the dumpster.”
“She was supposed to wake up after you found her.”
“You covered her with garbage.”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“Father said the dose was safe!”
There it was.
She had admitted involvement.
A camera recorded everything.
Vanessa realized too late.
Her face changed.
“You tricked me.”
“No. You finally heard yourself.”
She began crying, but I felt nothing.
Then she pushed a memory card across the table.
The video had been recorded by my grandmother’s old camera at the lake house.
Grace had hidden it before she was taken away.
Years later, Vanessa found it behind a wall during renovations.
She kept it as insurance against my father.
The video showed Evelyn confronting my grandfather on the dock.
My father appeared behind her.
He struck her.
She fell into the water.
My grandfather shouted in horror.
My father then turned toward Grace, who had witnessed everything.
My mother arrived seconds later.
She didn’t ask whether Evelyn was alive.
She asked what they would tell the police.
The recording captured the beginning of the entire conspiracy.
Vanessa leaned toward me.
“I can still help you.”
“You could have helped Lily.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were jealous.”
Her face twisted.
“You don’t understand what it was like watching them choose you.”
“They never chose me.”
“They chose your child.”
“No. They chose what they could steal from her.”
Vanessa looked down.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that she had never been loved either.
Only used.
But understanding did not erase guilt.
As I stood to leave, she asked one question.
“Will you take care of Emma?”
I stopped at the door.
“I’ll make sure she is safe.”
May you like
Vanessa closed her eyes.
It was the closest thing to mercy I could offer.
