Chapter 14: Grace Speaks

Sarah walked onto the dock slowly.

Evelyn followed several feet behind her.

My mother stared at the daughter she had erased.

“You’re not Grace,” she said.

Sarah lifted her pendant.

“You gave me this before you locked me in the basement.”

My mother’s hand trembled.

“You were sick.”

“I was five.”

“You lied about your grandfather.”

“I watched him push Grandma.”

Lily clung to my mother’s arm.

The lake moved beneath them.

Sarah stepped closer.

“You could have saved me.”

My mother’s face hardened.

“You would have destroyed the family.”

“No,” Sarah said. “I would have told the truth.”

Police surrounded the shoreline.

Officer Grant aimed carefully, but my mother kept Lily between herself and every clear shot.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Margaret.”

My mother turned.

Evelyn held a folder.

“The trust transfer is complete. Grace owns everything.”

My mother’s eyes widened.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I already did.”

Evelyn tore the folder in half.

It was a copy, but my mother didn’t know that.

She loosened her grip on Lily.

I ran.

My mother tried to pull Lily backward.

The rotten edge of the dock broke beneath them.

They fell.

I hit the boards on my knees and grabbed Lily’s wrist.

Her silver bracelet dug into my palm.

My mother disappeared beneath the water.

For one second, I considered letting her go.

Then Sarah jumped in.

She pulled the woman who had abandoned her back to the surface.

Officers dragged them both onto shore.

My mother coughed and screamed.

“Why did you save me?”

Sarah stood over her, soaked and shaking.

“Because I am not you.”

Police placed my mother in handcuffs.

On the ground near the house, Marcus had restrained my father until officers arrived.

Lily wrapped herself around me.

I held her so tightly she complained she couldn’t breathe.

I loosened my arms.

“Sorry.”

She pressed her wet face against my neck.

“It’s okay, Mommy. You found me again.”

Behind us, my father began laughing.

“You think this is over?”

Detective Ruiz turned toward him.

May you like

He smiled through blood on his teeth.

“Ask Marcus who paid for the engagement ring.”
