Chapter 12: The Empty Hospital Room

I called the hospital immediately.
Lily’s nurse answered.
Then the line went dead.
Marcus and I ran to the pediatric floor.
Lily’s bed was empty.
Her stuffed bunny lay on the pillow.
The oxygen monitor had been disconnected.
A nurse was unconscious inside the supply closet.
Security footage showed my mother wearing scrubs and pushing Lily away in a wheelchair.
She had been released less than forty minutes earlier.
She came directly for my daughter.
My phone rang.
Blocked number.
I answered.
My mother’s voice was calm.
“You always were careless, Claire.”
“Where is she?”
“You brought strangers into family matters.”
“You tried to kill her.”
“I tried to correct a mistake.”
Marcus activated the recorder on his phone.
I kept her talking.
“Lily is not a mistake.”
“She was never supposed to belong to you.”
My mother told me to come alone to the old lake house.
No police.
No Marcus.
No Evelyn.
“If I see headlights, Lily goes into the water.”
The call ended.
Ruiz refused to let me go alone.
So we created a plan.
I wore a concealed microphone.
Officers approached through the woods.
Marcus remained with the tactical team.
At the lake house, the front door stood open.
Inside, birthday decorations had been taped to the walls.
The same pink balloons from Emma’s false party.
Lily sat at the dining table wearing her yellow birthday dress.
My mother stood behind her with one hand on her shoulder.
A birthday cake burned with four candles.
“Come in,” she said. “We’re finally celebrating the correct child.”
I stepped closer.
Lily’s eyes were red.
“Mommy.”
I forced myself not to run.
My mother held a syringe against Lily’s neck.
“Stop.”
I stopped.
“What do you want?”
“The trust.”
“I don’t control it.”
“But Evelyn does.”
My mother smiled.
“And she will trade every dollar for Grace.”
Then another voice came from the darkness behind me.
“She already did.”
My father stepped into the room.
May you like
He had escaped custody.
And he was holding Marcus’s gun.
