CHAPTER 9 – The Man Who Knew Too Much

"He shouldn't be here."

Richard Carter's voice was barely audible.

Yet everyone in the room heard it.

Marcus Reed didn't take his eyes off the man stepping out of the black SUV.

He was in his late fifties.

Tall.

Impeccably dressed.

Calm.

Far too calm for someone walking into an active crime scene surrounded by police officers.

The leather briefcase in his hand looked ordinary.

His expression did not.

"Who is he?" Marcus asked quietly.

Richard swallowed.

"Victor Lang."

Captain Brooks immediately looked up.

"The company's chief legal counsel?"

Richard nodded once.

"My closest adviser..."

He paused.

"...for twenty-eight years."

Victor Lang walked through the broken front doorway without hesitation.

He looked around the room, taking in every detail.

The police.

The forensic team.

Derek in handcuffs.

Lila sitting beside Marcus.

Finally, his eyes settled on Richard.

"Richard."

His voice remained composed.

"You should have called me."

Richard stared at him.

"I was going to."

Victor nodded toward Derek.

"I'll take it from here."

Captain Brooks stepped into his path.

"No."

"This is now a criminal investigation."

Victor offered a polite smile.

"I understand."

"I represent the Carter family."

"You represent your client."

Captain Brooks corrected.

"I represent the law."

Victor's smile never faded.

"I'll need to speak with Mr. Carter."

Captain Brooks shook her head.

"Not until processing is complete."

Victor slowly turned toward Derek.

For a split second...

Marcus noticed something.

A look.

Tiny.

Almost imperceptible.

It lasted less than a second.

But Derek understood it.

His breathing slowed.

The panic vanished.

Marcus filed the moment away.

Years in military intelligence had taught him one thing.

People often spoke without words.

Richard noticed it too.

"Victor..."

His voice grew colder.

"When did you get here?"

"I landed this morning."

"You came straight from the airport?"

"Yes."

Richard held his gaze.

"No."

Victor blinked.

"What?"

"You already knew."

The room became silent.

Victor's expression remained controlled.

"I don't understand."

Marcus did.

Captain Brooks suddenly asked,

"Who informed you?"

Victor answered without hesitation.

"Derek."

Captain Brooks frowned.

"Derek's phone has been in police custody for nearly two hours."

Silence.

Victor realized his mistake.

Marcus stepped forward.

"So."

"You didn't hear from Derek today."

"Who called you?"

Victor didn't answer.

At that moment, the forensic technician hurried into the room.

"Captain."

"We've recovered deleted text messages from Mr. Carter's phone."

Captain Brooks accepted the tablet.

Her eyes scanned the screen.

Then she looked slowly toward Victor.

"What?"

Richard asked.

She turned the tablet around.

The final outgoing message...

Sent thirty-seven minutes before Marcus arrived.

TO: VICTOR LANG

If she calls her father, stall him. I'll finish everything before he gets here.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Victor slowly removed his glasses.

"I can explain."

Marcus' voice became dangerously quiet.

"You'd better."

Victor sighed.

"I didn't know what Derek intended."

Captain Brooks raised an eyebrow.

"You received that message."

"I assumed he meant the divorce."

Marcus laughed once.

It wasn't amusement.

It was disbelief.

"You expected us to believe that?"

Victor looked directly at Richard.

"I've protected this family for decades."

Richard's face hardened.

"Have you..."

"...or have you protected Derek?"

Another detective entered carrying several printed financial records.

"Captain."

"The financial crimes unit just confirmed something."

He handed over the documents.

Captain Brooks read silently.

Then looked toward Victor.

"Interesting."

"What?"

Marcus asked.

She handed him the papers.

Every fraudulent transfer...

Every shell company...

Every offshore account...

Listed the same legal representative.

Victor Lang.

Richard slowly closed his eyes.

"No..."

Victor immediately objected.

"Richard, listen to me."

"I never stole from you."

"I only prepared the paperwork."

Marcus folded his arms.

"You created fake companies."

Victor nodded reluctantly.

"At Derek's instruction."

Captain Brooks asked,

"Did you know they were fraudulent?"

Victor hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

Richard took one slow step forward.

"When?"

Victor whispered,

"About five years ago."

Richard's shoulders sagged.

"Five years..."

"You've been lying to me for five years."

Victor looked genuinely ashamed.

"It started small."

"Derek said it was temporary."

"He promised he'd repay everything."

Marcus interrupted.

"And you believed him?"

"No."

Victor answered honestly.

"I believed I could control him."

Lila stared at Victor.

"Did you know..."

"...he was hurting me?"

Victor's silence lasted too long.

Her heart sank.

"You knew."

He slowly nodded.

"I suspected."

She laughed bitterly.

"Suspected?"

Victor lowered his eyes.

"I saw bruises once."

"I asked Derek."

"He said..."

"...you fell."

Lila looked away.

"So everyone believed him."

"No."

A new voice interrupted.

Everyone turned.

Richard stepped toward Lila.

"I believed my son."

His eyes filled with regret.

"And that's something I'll regret for the rest of my life."

Captain Brooks' phone rang again.

She answered immediately.

"Brooks."

Her expression changed.

"When?"

She listened silently.

Then...

"Understood."

She ended the call.

"We have another witness."

Marcus frowned.

"Who?"

"The emergency room physician."

Everyone looked surprised.

Captain Brooks continued.

"He treated Lila three years ago."

Lila's heartbeat quickened.

"He remembers her."

Marcus asked,

"After all this time?"

Captain Brooks nodded.

"He said something about her case bothered him."

An hour later...

Dr. Samuel Greene arrived at the mansion carrying an old medical file.

He looked at Lila for several seconds before smiling sadly.

"I remember you."

Lila blinked.

"You do?"

"You apologized..."

He said quietly.

"...while we were trying to stop your bleeding."

Marcus frowned.

"She apologized?"

Dr. Greene nodded.

"She kept saying..."

"'Please don't tell my husband I made everyone late.'"

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked away.

His daughter had been more worried about upsetting her abuser than surviving.

Dr. Greene opened the old file.

"I reviewed these before coming."

He pointed to several photographs.

"The injuries never matched a fall."

Captain Brooks leaned closer.

"What did they match?"

Dr. Greene answered without hesitation.

"A forceful push."

Marcus slowly turned toward Derek.

The doctor's words destroyed the last shred of Derek's defense.

Then Dr. Greene pulled one final document from the file.

"I shouldn't still have this."

He handed it to Captain Brooks.

"It was never included in the official records."

She unfolded it carefully.

"What is it?"

"My handwritten notes."

Marcus read the final sentence.

His face darkened instantly.

It read:

Patient quietly whispered: "My husband pushed me."

Captain Brooks looked stunned.

"If she reported it..."

"...why wasn't this investigated?"

Dr. Greene looked toward Victor.

Then toward Richard.

Finally...

Toward Derek.

"Because..."

He spoke with visible shame.

"...someone arrived at the hospital that night before the police could interview her."

Marcus felt a chill run through him.

"Who?"

Dr. Greene slowly answered.

"It wasn't her husband."

"It was the family's attorney."

Every eye in the room turned toward Victor Lang.

May you like

Victor's face turned completely white.
