CHAPTER 2 – A Father's Promise

"And this ends today."
The words settled over the mansion like the silence before a storm.
Nobody moved.
Colonel Marcus Reed slowly released Derek's shirt, but only after making sure the younger man understood exactly how easily he could have broken every bone in his body. Derek stumbled backward, coughing as he rubbed his bruised throat.
Brooke rushed to him.
"Oh my God, Derek! Are you okay?"
He shoved her away without looking.
His terrified eyes never left the gray-haired soldier standing between him and the staircase.
Marcus Reed wasn't a large man by modern military standards. Years of service had carved away every unnecessary ounce from his frame, leaving behind nothing but muscle, discipline, and scars. His faded tactical jacket couldn't hide the old bullet wound that pulled slightly at his left shoulder whenever he moved.
He didn't need to look intimidating.
He had spent thirty-two years becoming exactly that.
His attention returned to the staircase.
"Lila."
His voice softened immediately.
"Come to me."
Lila tried.
She gripped the handrail and took one careful step.
Pain shot through her side so violently that her knees buckled.
Marcus crossed the room before anyone else reacted.
He caught her before she hit another floor.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Lila buried her face against her father's chest exactly as she had done when she was seven years old after scraping both knees learning to ride a bicycle.
Back then he had carried her home.
Today...
She was twenty-nine.
Pregnant.
Covered in bruises.
And trembling exactly the same way.
Marcus wrapped one arm carefully around her shoulders while avoiding the dark purple marks blooming beneath her loose sweater.
His jaw tightened.
"What did they do to you?"
Lila tried to answer.
Instead, tears spilled down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry..."
Marcus frowned.
"For what?"
"I thought... if I loved him enough..."
Her voice disappeared into sobs.
"I thought he'd change."
The Colonel closed his eyes for one painful second.
"No."
His answer was immediate.
"You don't apologize for believing someone who promised to love you."
His gaze lifted toward Derek.
"The person who should be apologizing is standing over there."
Derek finally recovered enough courage to speak.
"This is ridiculous."
He straightened his expensive shirt and forced a confident smile.
"She fell."
Marcus didn't even look at him.
Derek continued.
"She's emotional because of the pregnancy. She's been unstable for months."
Brooke quickly nodded.
"Exactly."
She folded her arms.
"She's been throwing things around the house, screaming, accusing us of crazy affairs."
Marcus looked at Lila.
"Did you fall?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Were you hit?"
Silence.
Derek answered first.
"Don't answer that."
Marcus turned slowly.
"I wasn't speaking to you."
Lila stared at the floor.
Then...
Almost too quietly to hear...
"Yes."
The single word echoed louder than a scream.
Marcus asked another question.
"More than once?"
Lila nodded.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Each tiny movement shattered another piece of the father's composure.
Brooke rolled her eyes dramatically.
"Oh, please."
"Every married couple argues."
Marcus finally looked directly at her.
His expression was completely empty.
"What is your name?"
She blinked.
"Brooke."
"You live here?"
She hesitated.
"...Sometimes."
"You sleep with married men?"
Derek exploded.
"Enough!"
"You don't get to question her!"
Marcus ignored him.
He took one slow step toward Brooke.
She instinctively stepped backward.
"You helped abuse a pregnant woman."
Brooke forced a laugh.
"I never touched her."
Lila whispered,
"You kicked me."
The room froze.
Brooke's smile vanished.
"I..."
"You kicked the baby clothes."
Lila continued without looking at anyone.
"Then you kicked me while I was trying to stand."
Marcus inhaled slowly.
Years of military training had taught him to control anger.
But there were different kinds of battlefields.
Some demanded patience.
Others demanded justice.
A voice interrupted the silence.
"Derek?"
An elderly woman entered through the dining room carrying shopping bags.
She stopped dead.
"Martha..."
Lila whispered.
The housekeeper.
She had worked for Derek's family for almost twenty years.
Martha looked from Lila's bruised face...
...to the shattered front door...
...to Colonel Reed.
Her hands began to shake.
"Oh, dear God..."
Marcus noticed immediately.
"You know what happened."
Martha looked at Derek.
His stare carried a silent warning.
Years of fear.
Years of obedience.
Years of looking away.
Marcus spoke gently.
"My daughter needs someone brave today."
Martha closed her eyes.
When she opened them again...
Something inside her had changed.
She slowly placed the grocery bags on the floor.
"I heard him."
Derek's face lost all color.
Martha continued.
"I heard him hit her."
Brooke shouted,
"She's lying!"
Martha ignored her.
"Three nights ago..."
Her voice trembled.
"...Miss Lila accidentally burned dinner."
Derek interrupted.
"Stop talking."
Martha didn't.
"He slammed her into the kitchen counter."
Lila instinctively touched her ribs.
Marcus noticed.
His stomach twisted.
Martha continued.
"Last week..."
"He threw away all the baby clothes."
Brooke's breathing became uneven.
"And yesterday..."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I heard Miss Lila begging him not to hurt the baby."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Derek suddenly laughed.
It sounded desperate.
"So now we're believing the maid?"
Marcus answered calmly.
"No."
"We're believing the evidence."
His eyes traveled slowly over Lila.
Bruised wrist.
Split lip.
Purple fingerprints on her upper arm.
Difficulty breathing.
Protective posture around her abdomen.
Every injury told its own story.
Marcus had investigated enough assaults during military service to recognize the pattern immediately.
"This wasn't one bad night."
He said quietly.
"This was systematic."
Derek reached for his phone.
"I'm calling my lawyer."
Marcus nodded.
"Good."
"I already called someone too."
Derek frowned.
"What?"
Marcus reached into his jacket.
Not for a weapon.
For another phone.
He pressed speaker.
The call connected instantly.
"Colonel Reed."
A calm female voice answered.
"We're outside."
Derek's confidence faltered.
"What do you mean outside?"
Marcus looked toward the shattered entrance.
"Come in."
Seconds later...
Three black SUVs rolled into the driveway.
The front door was already gone.
Six people entered the mansion.
Not soldiers.
Not police.
A woman in a navy blazer carrying a leather briefcase.
Two detectives.
A forensic photographer.
A crime-scene technician.
And finally...
A silver-haired woman wearing a dark tailored suit.
She walked directly toward Marcus.
"You got here before us."
Marcus nodded once.
"My daughter comes first."
The woman turned toward Derek.
Her badge flashed.
Special Victims Division.
"My name is Captain Elena Brooks."
She looked at Lila's bruises.
Then at the terrified housekeeper.
Then at Brooke.
Then finally at Derek.
"I think we have quite a lot to talk about."
Derek swallowed.
May you like
For the very first time since he had started hurting his wife...
He realized no one was coming to save him.
