CHAPTER 12 – The Nursery's Secret

"I copied every recording onto another device."
For one heartbeat...
Nobody moved.
Captain Elena Brooks was the first to react.
"You have another copy?"
Lila nodded.
"I made it about two months ago."
Marcus looked at her, both relieved and confused.
"You never told anyone?"
Lila managed a weak smile.
"I didn't even remember."
"I was so scared all the time..."
"...I forgot where I hid it."
Captain Brooks stepped closer.
"Do you remember now?"
Lila looked toward the second floor.
"The nursery."
Everyone hurried upstairs.
Marcus stayed close enough to catch Lila if she lost her balance.
The paramedic had warned her to avoid climbing stairs, but she refused to stay behind.
"I need to finish this."
Marcus didn't argue.
He simply placed one steady hand beneath her elbow.
"I've got you."
For the first time in years...
She believed him.
The nursery looked exactly as they had left it.
Tiny baby clothes still lay scattered across the hardwood floor.
The half-finished crib stood against the wall.
A pale yellow rocking chair faced the window.
Lila stopped in the doorway.
Tears filled her eyes.
"This room..."
Marcus looked around silently.
"It should have been full of laughter."
Instead...
It had become a crime scene.
Captain Brooks asked gently,
"Where did you hide it?"
Lila closed her eyes.
"I remember thinking..."
"'He'll never look somewhere he hates.'"
Marcus frowned.
"What did Derek hate?"
"The nursery."
She whispered.
"He never wanted to come in here."
The forensic team carefully searched the room.
Nothing inside the dresser.
Nothing beneath the crib.
Nothing inside the changing table.
Twenty minutes passed.
The frustration in the room grew heavier.
Captain Brooks looked at Lila.
"Are you sure?"
Lila nodded.
"I know it's here."
Marcus walked slowly around the room.
He wasn't searching.
He was remembering.
"Lila..."
She turned toward him.
"When you were little..."
"...where did you always hide your treasures?"
She smiled through her tears.
"In books."
Marcus nodded.
"You always said nobody looked inside books."
Her eyes suddenly widened.
"The bookshelf."
The nursery bookshelf held dozens of children's books.
Picture books.
Fairy tales.
Alphabet books.
Marcus began removing them one by one.
Nothing.
Then...
His hand stopped.
One book felt heavier than the others.
It was an old copy of Goodnight Moon.
The pages had been carefully glued together.
Captain Brooks frowned.
"Open it."
Marcus slid a pocketknife beneath the glued pages.
The hollowed-out center slowly separated.
Inside...
A tiny black memory card rested in a piece of cotton.
Lila gasped.
"I found it..."
Marcus carefully lifted it out.
"No."
He smiled softly.
"You saved it."
The digital analyst immediately inserted the card into a secure laptop.
Everyone crowded around the screen.
A folder appeared.
Private Recordings
Number of files:
214
Captain Brooks exhaled slowly.
"My God..."
Marcus looked at Lila.
"You documented everything."
Lila shook her head.
"I documented enough."
The first recording began.
The date showed...
Seven months earlier.
Derek's voice echoed clearly.
"If you ever tell anyone..."
"...they'll never find your body."
The room fell silent.
Captain Brooks marked the timestamp.
"That's a terroristic threat."
The second recording.
Brooke's voice.
"Just sign the divorce papers."
Lila answered quietly.
"You already have my husband."
"What else do you want?"
Brooke laughed.
"The company."
Richard slowly lowered his head.
The third recording changed everything.
It wasn't Derek.
It wasn't Brooke.
A third voice filled the speakers.
Victor Lang.
Marcus frowned.
"When was this?"
The analyst checked.
"Five months ago."
Victor's voice was unmistakable.
"Derek..."
"You need to slow down."
"People are starting to notice."
Derek answered,
"I don't care."
"I'll have everything once the baby's gone."
Marcus' face turned to stone.
Captain Brooks looked toward the officers.
"That's conspiracy."
One detective nodded.
"And premeditation."
Richard couldn't take his eyes off the screen.
His son had been planning this...
For months.
Another recording started automatically.
Lila recognized it immediately.
"Oh no..."
Marcus looked at her.
"What?"
She covered her mouth.
"I forgot this one."
The recording began with heavy rain.
Car doors slamming.
Then...
Richard Carter's voice.
Everyone froze.
Richard looked confused.
"I don't remember this."
The timestamp was four months earlier.
The audio quality was poor.
Apparently...
Lila had accidentally left her phone recording inside her purse.
The purse had been sitting in the front hallway.
Richard had visited unexpectedly.
His conversation with Derek had been captured.
Richard spoke first.
"When are you taking Lila to her specialist?"
Derek answered calmly.
"Next week."
"She's doing well."
Richard sighed with relief.
"Good."
"She's family."
"I don't want anything happening to her."
Marcus slowly looked toward Richard.
The old billionaire's eyes filled with tears.
"I really didn't know."
Lila reached over and gently touched his hand.
"I believe you."
It was the first kind thing she had said to him all day.
Richard quietly broke down.
Captain Brooks continued playing the recordings.
One after another.
Threats.
Insults.
Financial discussions.
Admissions of fraud.
Manipulation.
Everything Derek had spent years denying...
Was preserved in his own voice.
Then...
The analyst opened the final recording.
Unlike the others...
It had no date.
Only one word.
Emergency
Lila frowned.
"I don't remember making that."
Marcus felt something was wrong.
"Play it."
The room became silent.
The audio started.
Footsteps.
Heavy breathing.
Lila's frightened whisper.
"If anyone ever hears this..."
"...my name is Lila Carter."
"I think Derek finally knows I'm recording him."
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
Lila's recorded voice continued.
"If something happens to me..."
"...it wasn't an accident."
"I love my dad."
"I love my baby."
Then...
A loud crash.
Derek shouting somewhere in the background.
The bedroom door slamming open.
Lila screamed.
The recording ended abruptly.
Silence filled the nursery.
No one could speak.
Marcus stood perfectly still.
His daughter...
Had unknowingly recorded what she believed might be the last message of her life.
Captain Brooks quietly removed the memory card.
"This changes everything."
Marcus nodded.
"It proves intent."
"No."
Captain Brooks answered.
"It proves fear."
She looked at Lila.
"A woman doesn't leave a goodbye message..."
"...unless she truly believes she's about to die."
Every officer in the room understood exactly what that meant.
The charges against Derek had just become even more serious.
Before anyone could speak again...
One of the detectives' radios crackled.
"Captain."
She answered immediately.
"Go ahead."
"We found the fake ambulance."
Everyone looked up.
"Where?"
The detective's voice came back tense.
"Abandoned."
"Ten miles from here."
Captain Brooks frowned.
"And Ghost?"
A long pause.
Then came the answer that chilled the room.
"The ambulance was empty..."
"...but someone left a message written across the inside wall."
"What message?"
The detective swallowed audibly before reading it.
