CHAPTER 4 – The Recording Nobody Expected

The question lingered in the nursery like smoke.

Captain Elena Brooks didn't repeat it.

She didn't have to.

Every pair of eyes in the room shifted toward Brooke.

For the first time since Colonel Marcus Reed had walked through the front door, the young woman looked genuinely frightened.

Lila lowered her eyes.

"She laughed."

The words came out flat.

Empty.

"As I was lying on the floor..."

"...she stood right there."

Lila pointed weakly toward the nursery doorway.

"She told Derek to leave me there."

Brooke immediately shook her head.

"That's not true!"

"You've completely lost your mind!"

Lila didn't even look at her.

"You said..."

Her voice cracked.

"'If the baby survives that, maybe it deserves to live.'"

The color drained from Marcus' face.

Even the officers exchanged uneasy glances.

Captain Brooks wrote one sentence in her notebook before looking back up.

"Did anyone help you?"

Lila nodded slowly.

"Martha."

The elderly housekeeper stepped forward.

"I found her nearly an hour later."

Her hands trembled.

"She was still bleeding."

"I begged Mr. Carter to call an ambulance."

She swallowed hard.

"He refused."

Marcus stared at Derek.

"You let my daughter bleed on the floor?"

Derek forced himself to stand straighter.

"It wasn't that serious."

Marcus moved before anyone realized it.

He crossed the room in two strides and grabbed Derek by the front of his shirt.

The younger man's feet lifted completely off the floor.

"You don't get to decide what was serious."

His voice remained calm.

Too calm.

"My daughter could have died."

Two officers immediately stepped between them.

"Colonel."

Marcus released Derek without resistance.

Years of discipline returned in an instant.

He stepped back.

"I'm finished."

But the fury burning behind his eyes promised something very different.

A sharp voice echoed from the hallway.

"Captain!"

One of the detectives hurried into the nursery carrying a portable hard drive.

"We found the security server."

Captain Brooks looked up.

"Damaged?"

The detective nodded.

"Someone tried to destroy it."

Marcus looked toward Derek.

Derek looked toward Brooke.

Brooke looked away.

The detective continued.

"The storage unit was smashed with a hammer."

Captain Brooks sighed.

"So the footage is gone."

"Not exactly."

The detective held up a small memory card.

"This was hidden inside the backup slot."

"The automatic cloud backup failed..."

"...but this emergency card records the last seventy-two hours."

Silence.

Derek's breathing became noticeably faster.

Marcus noticed immediately.

"So."

He looked directly at his son-in-law.

"You were trying to erase something."

"No."

Derek answered too quickly.

"The cameras never worked."

The detective smiled faintly.

"That's interesting."

"We haven't watched the footage yet."

"So how do you know what it shows?"

Derek froze.

Another mistake.

Captain Brooks accepted the memory card.

"Let's find out."

The technician connected the card to a laptop.

Everyone gathered around the dining table.

The room became so quiet that the faint hum of the computer sounded deafening.

The first recording appeared.

Timestamp: Three Days Earlier.

The nursery.

Lila carefully folded tiny baby clothes into a dresser.

She looked tired...

...but peaceful.

Then Derek entered.

Without saying a word, he snatched a pair of newborn pajamas from her hands and threw them across the room.

The audio wasn't perfect.

But every word was clear enough.

"I told you to stop buying this garbage."

Lila answered softly.

"They were on sale."

"They're for our son."

Derek exploded.

"I DON'T HAVE A SON!"

The room watching the video remained silent.

Lila on the recording flinched.

Then...

The first shove.

She stumbled backward into the changing table.

A loud crack echoed through the speakers.

Gasps filled the nursery.

Marcus' jaw tightened.

No one looked at Derek anymore.

They looked only at the screen.

The recording continued.

Lila slid to the floor.

One hand covered the back of her bleeding head.

The other protected her stomach.

She whispered,

"Derek..."

"Please..."

Then Brooke walked into frame.

She wasn't shocked.

She wasn't horrified.

She casually leaned against the doorway.

She watched.

She smiled.

Then the audio captured every horrifying word.

"Leave her."

"Maybe losing the baby will solve both our problems."

No one breathed.

Captain Brooks slowly paused the video.

She turned toward Brooke.

"Do you wish to change your previous statement?"

Brooke's lips moved.

No sound came out.

Marcus didn't speak.

He couldn't.

Instead, he looked at Lila.

She had turned away from the screen.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

"I didn't remember..."

She whispered.

"I forgot she said that."

Marcus gently covered her hand with his own.

"No."

"You survived it."

"Sometimes that's how the mind protects itself."

Captain Brooks resumed the recording.

Another five minutes passed.

No ambulance arrived.

No one helped Lila.

Instead...

The video showed Martha quietly entering the nursery.

The elderly woman gasped.

She knelt beside Lila.

She begged Derek to call 911.

His answer echoed through the speakers.

"If she wants a hospital..."

"...she can crawl there herself."

The detective quietly stopped the playback.

No one needed to see more.

An officer stepped closer to Captain Brooks.

"Captain."

"This is enough."

She nodded once.

"It is."

She closed the laptop.

Then turned toward Derek.

"Mr. Carter."

"I am placing you under arrest for felony domestic assault, unlawful imprisonment, and multiple related offenses."

The words echoed through the mansion.

Derek laughed.

Actually laughed.

"You think this video is enough?"

"My lawyer will destroy this case."

Captain Brooks calmly nodded.

"Perhaps."

"But we're not finished."

She looked toward the detective.

"What about the older backups?"

The detective frowned.

"The main server is damaged."

"...but I noticed something strange."

"What?"

"There were dozens of deleted files."

Marcus looked up.

"Can they be recovered?"

The detective smiled.

"Most people think deleting means disappearing."

"It doesn't."

"We'll recover everything."

Derek's confident smile disappeared.

For the first time...

Real panic flashed across his face.

As officers stepped forward with handcuffs, Derek suddenly shoved one of them aside.

"I'm not going to prison!"

He bolted toward the back hallway.

"Stop!"

An officer chased after him.

Another followed.

Marcus instinctively moved too, years of military training taking over before conscious thought.

Derek sprinted through the kitchen, burst through the rear patio doors, and raced across the backyard toward the tall security fence.

Rain had begun to fall.

The wet grass turned slick beneath his expensive dress shoes.

He glanced back once.

A mistake.

His foot slipped.

He crashed hard against the stone pathway but scrambled to his feet and kept running.

Marcus was gaining on him.

Not because he was younger.

Because he knew exactly how frightened people ran.

Desperately.

Without thinking.

Derek reached the locked rear gate.

He fumbled with the electronic keypad, his shaking fingers pressing the wrong numbers again and again.

The gate didn't open.

Marcus stopped only a few feet behind him.

"You can keep running."

His voice carried through the rain.

"But eventually..."

"...you run out of road."

Derek slowly turned.

His face was pale.

His breathing ragged.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't confidence.

It was desperation.

"You think you've already won?"

He laughed softly.

"You have no idea..."

He looked directly at Lila, who had stepped onto the covered patio with Captain Brooks beside her.

"...what else is buried in this family."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Derek's smile widened.

"Ask your daughter..."

"...why she never told you about the baby before this one."

The entire backyard fell silent.

Lila's face lost every trace of color.

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

"Lila..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer—

May you like

The sharp sound of handcuffs snapping shut echoed through the rain.
