CHAPTER 3 – The Lies Begin to Crack

Captain Elena Brooks didn't raise her voice.

She didn't need to.

The moment she displayed her badge, the atmosphere inside the mansion changed completely.

The smug confidence Derek had worn like an expensive suit disappeared.

Brooke instinctively reached for his arm.

"Derek..."

He shook her off.

"No."

His eyes darted toward the front windows where two marked police cruisers had just pulled into the driveway behind the black SUVs.

"This is insane."

Captain Brooks glanced toward the officers entering the house.

"Mr. Carter."

She opened a slim leather folder.

"Please remain where you are."

"No one is under arrest."

"Yet."

Those last two words landed like stones.

Marcus carefully guided Lila to the living room sofa.

She winced as she sat.

He noticed immediately.

"Your ribs?"

She nodded.

"I think..."

She inhaled sharply.

"...they're worse than yesterday."

Marcus knelt beside her.

"When was the last time a doctor examined you?"

Lila stared at her hands.

"I..."

Her silence answered the question.

Brooks looked up.

"Mrs. Carter, have you received regular prenatal care?"

Another long pause.

Finally...

"No."

Marcus slowly turned toward Derek.

"You stopped taking her to her appointments?"

Derek folded his arms.

"I was busy."

Brooke jumped in.

"She's exaggerating."

"Lila canceled most of them herself."

Lila shook her head.

"No."

"It was Derek."

"He said we couldn't waste money on a baby he didn't want."

The room fell silent.

Captain Brooks wrote something in her notebook.

Without looking up, she asked,

"Did he ever prevent you from seeing a doctor?"

Lila swallowed.

"Yes."

"Did he control your finances?"

"...Yes."

"Your phone?"

"...Yes."

"Were you ever prevented from leaving this house?"

Lila closed her eyes.

"For three days."

Marcus looked at his daughter.

"What happened?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered,

"He locked me upstairs."

The words stunned everyone.

Even the officers stopped writing.

Marcus spoke carefully.

"Tell us."

Lila looked around the room.

For years she had hidden the truth.

For years she had made excuses.

For years she had convinced herself that every bruise had an explanation.

Today...

She was too exhausted to lie anymore.

"It started after our second anniversary."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Derek lost a business contract."

"He came home angry."

"I tried to comfort him."

She unconsciously rubbed the fading scar near her wrist.

"He slapped me."

Brooke rolled her eyes.

"Oh, come on."

Captain Brooks raised one finger without taking her eyes off Lila.

"She speaks."

"You wait."

Brooke's mouth snapped shut.

"I thought it was stress."

Lila continued.

"The next morning he cried."

"He bought flowers."

"He promised it would never happen again."

Marcus closed his eyes.

He had heard that pattern before.

Too many times.

Then Lila spoke again.

"It didn't happen again..."

"...for almost three months."

Derek interrupted.

"You were impossible to live with!"

Marcus stood.

"So your solution was violence?"

"I never—"

"You don't get to interrupt her."

His voice was quiet.

Which somehow made it even more frightening.

Lila took a shaky breath.

"When I became pregnant..."

She instinctively rested one hand over her stomach.

"He changed."

"He wasn't happy."

"He asked me to..."

She couldn't finish.

Marcus gently squeezed her shoulder.

"You can say it."

"He wanted me to abort the baby."

No one spoke.

Not even Brooke.

"I refused."

"He stopped sleeping in our room."

"A few weeks later..."

She slowly lifted her eyes toward Brooke.

"...I found her lipstick on one of his shirts."

Brooke laughed.

"So?"

"You were already miserable."

Derek rubbed his forehead.

"Brooke..."

But she had already started talking.

"I made him happy."

"You didn't."

Marcus looked at her.

"You think this is something to be proud of?"

She crossed her arms defiantly.

"I fell in love."

Lila finally met Brooke's eyes.

"No."

"You fell in love with my husband."

Brooke smirked.

"And?"

Captain Brooks quietly closed her notebook.

Then she looked directly at Brooke.

"Miss Walker."

"You understand that if evidence shows you participated in assaulting Mrs. Carter..."

"...you may also face criminal charges."

Brooke's smile faded.

"I barely know her."

Martha spoke from behind them.

"That's a lie."

Everyone turned.

The elderly housekeeper looked far less frightened now.

"I've watched Miss Brooke come here nearly every day for eight months."

Brooke stared.

"You old—"

"Careful."

Captain Brooks cut her off.

"Martha is now a witness."

One of the detectives approached.

"Captain."

He held up a tablet.

"The exterior cameras are intact."

Derek froze.

Marcus noticed.

"So..."

"There are cameras."

Derek answered too quickly.

"Only outside."

The detective looked confused.

"Actually..."

"There are interior security cameras too."

Brooke whipped around.

"What?"

Derek's face turned pale.

Marcus caught the reaction instantly.

"You forgot about those."

Derek didn't answer.

The detective continued.

"We found a central recording system in the study."

Captain Brooks asked,

"Still functioning?"

"It appears so."

Derek suddenly stepped forward.

"Those cameras haven't worked in months."

The detective frowned.

"We haven't checked yet."

"So how do you know?"

Silence.

Marcus saw it.

The tiny crack.

The first real mistake.

Captain Brooks nodded toward another officer.

"Secure the recording system."

Derek lunged.

"No!"

Two officers blocked him immediately.

"You need a warrant!"

Captain Brooks smiled politely.

"We already have one."

She held up a folded document.

"Domestic violence investigation."

"Signed at 6:15 this morning."

Marcus had made the call while flying overnight.

He hadn't come alone.

He had come prepared.

Brooke suddenly grabbed her purse.

"I'm leaving."

An officer stepped into her path.

"I'm sorry."

"You've been identified as a witness."

"And possibly more."

She looked desperately at Derek.

"Do something!"

For the first time...

He couldn't.

Thirty minutes later...

The forensic photographer quietly documented every room.

The broken nursery.

The scattered baby clothes.

The cracked picture frame lying beneath the crib.

Then he stopped.

"Captain."

Everyone looked.

He pointed toward the nursery wall.

Just above the baseboard.

There were several small dark stains.

Old enough to have dried.

Brooks frowned.

"What is that?"

The crime-scene technician knelt beside them.

He tested one spot.

Then another.

Several long seconds passed.

Finally he looked up.

"It appears to be blood."

Marcus felt Lila tense beside him.

He looked at her.

She had gone completely white.

"Lila..."

She stared at the stains.

Her lips trembled.

"I..."

"I tried to paint over them."

Marcus felt his heart stop.

"What happened?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Three weeks ago..."

"Derek shoved me."

"I hit the corner of the changing table."

"My head..."

She slowly touched the back of her hair.

"It wouldn't stop bleeding."

The entire room fell silent.

Marcus clenched his fists so tightly his old knuckles turned white.

But Captain Brooks noticed something else.

She looked at the changing table.

Then at the blood.

Then back at Lila.

Her voice became very quiet.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Was anyone else in this room that night?"

Lila looked toward Brooke.

Brooke immediately looked away.

"I..."

Lila whispered.

"She was."

Every eye turned toward Brooke.

The young woman swallowed hard.

Captain Brooks asked the question that changed everything.

"And after your husband pushed you..."

May you like

"...what exactly did Miss Brooke do?"
