CHAPTER 8 – The Last Thing He Could Still Steal

"NO!"

Derek's roar echoed through the mansion as one hand tore free from the loosened handcuffs.

Everything happened at once.

He didn't run toward the front door.

He didn't attack the officers.

He lunged straight at Lila.

Not because he wanted her.

Because she was holding the one thing he believed still belonged to him.

The envelope.

The controlling shares of Carter International.

"Lila!"

Marcus shouted.

Before Derek could reach her, Colonel Reed stepped between them.

Years of Army Ranger training took over instinctively.

Marcus pivoted sideways, caught Derek's wrist, and redirected his momentum.

Derek crashed shoulder-first into the edge of the dining table.

The heavy oak table didn't move.

He did.

The impact knocked the air from his lungs.

But desperation was stronger than pain.

He pushed himself up and reached for the envelope again.

"That's mine!"

Richard Carter's voice thundered across the room.

"No."

"It never was."

Three officers tackled Derek before he could take another step.

He fought wildly.

Kicking.

Twisting.

Cursing.

"I built this company!"

Richard stared at his son with heartbreaking disappointment.

"No."

"You inherited an opportunity."

"You confused it with earning one."

Derek continued struggling.

"You owe me!"

Richard slowly shook his head.

"I gave you everything."

"You wanted more."

Captain Brooks crouched beside the broken handcuffs.

"Search him."

An officer immediately checked Derek's pockets.

Wallet.

Phone.

Car keys.

Nothing unusual...

Until he reached inside Derek's jacket.

"Captain."

He pulled out a small silver flash drive.

Marcus frowned.

"What is that?"

Derek's face changed instantly.

For the first time all day...

Pure fear.

"Give it back."

The officer ignored him and handed it to Captain Brooks.

She turned it over in her hand.

"No label."

"No markings."

Richard quietly spoke.

"Open it."

Minutes later...

The flash drive was connected to the forensic laptop.

Instead of financial records...

A folder appeared.

Its title made Lila's blood run cold.

LILA

Inside...

Hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Videos.

Scanned documents.

Captain Brooks opened the first image.

Lila asleep in bed.

Marcus frowned.

"When was this taken?"

Lila stared at the screen.

"I..."

"I don't know."

The next photograph.

Lila reading in the nursery.

Another.

Lila crying alone in the bathroom.

Another.

Lila sleeping on the couch with one hand over her pregnant belly.

Marcus slowly looked toward Derek.

"You were watching her."

"No."

Captain Brooks corrected quietly.

"He was documenting her."

She clicked another folder.

This one was named...

DOCTOR

Inside were edited photographs.

One image showed bruises on Lila's wrist.

Another showed overturned furniture.

Another showed broken dishes.

Captain Brooks narrowed her eyes.

"These have been manipulated."

The forensic technician nodded.

"The timestamps don't match."

Marcus frowned.

"What was he making?"

Captain Brooks already knew.

"A false abuse narrative."

She looked at Lila.

"He intended to claim you were unstable."

Another folder opened.

CUSTODY

Inside were draft legal filings.

Psychological evaluations.

Unsigned affidavits.

Prepared months in advance.

One sentence caught everyone's attention.

Mother displays violent emotional instability during pregnancy. Child safety is at risk.

Lila's hands began shaking.

"He..."

"...he was planning to take my baby."

Richard closed his eyes.

"My God."

Captain Brooks continued scrolling.

Each document became darker than the last.

There were appointment confirmations...

For psychiatrists Lila had never met.

Medication records...

For prescriptions she had never taken.

Witness statements...

Already signed with forged signatures.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"This wasn't panic."

"No."

Captain Brooks answered.

"This was planning."

The final folder appeared.

Its name was only one word.

INSURANCE

Richard frowned.

"Open it."

The screen filled with policy documents.

Life insurance.

Accidental death coverage.

Beneficiary forms.

Captain Brooks' expression hardened.

She read silently.

Then looked up.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Did you know your husband increased your life insurance policy six months ago?"

Lila slowly shook her head.

"No."

"To how much?"

Captain Brooks turned the screen toward Richard.

He inhaled sharply.

"Five million dollars."

The room became silent.

Marcus slowly turned toward Derek.

"You insured her..."

"...after she became pregnant."

No answer.

Captain Brooks looked at another page.

"The sole beneficiary..."

"...is Derek Carter."

Brooke stumbled backward until she hit the wall.

"You told me..."

Her voice trembled.

"You said you wanted a divorce."

Derek looked away.

"You lied to me too."

She laughed bitterly through tears.

"I wasn't your future."

"I was your backup plan."

Marcus didn't take his eyes off Derek.

"You weren't trying to get rid of the baby."

He spoke each word carefully.

"You were trying to get rid of both of them."

Lila instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.

The realization hit harder than any bruise.

She hadn't just survived abuse.

She had survived a plan.

Just then, one of the detectives rushed into the room holding a tablet.

"Captain."

"We recovered the deleted cloud account."

Captain Brooks looked up.

"Anything useful?"

The detective nodded.

"Very."

He tapped the screen.

"A private email account."

"Used only by Derek."

Another folder appeared.

Hundreds of messages.

Most were financial.

But one conversation stood out.

The recipient had no name.

Only an encrypted address.

Captain Brooks opened it.

The latest email appeared on screen.

Subject: Final Solution

Marcus' jaw tightened.

Richard's face went pale.

Captain Brooks read aloud.

"Once the pregnancy is over, everything else will take care of itself. No witnesses. No custody battle. No more problems."

The room froze.

Lila covered her mouth.

Brooke whispered,

"...I never saw that."

Captain Brooks looked at Derek.

"Who were you writing to?"

He remained silent.

Another email loaded automatically.

This one contained only a single reply.

Make sure the father never gets there in time.

Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

Someone...

Had known Lila called him.

Someone had expected Marcus Reed to come.

Which meant—

Derek hadn't been acting alone.

Captain Brooks looked around the room.

Her voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"We're no longer investigating only domestic violence."

She closed the laptop.

"We're looking for a co-conspirator."

Just then, an officer's radio crackled.

"Captain... we've got a problem."

"What is it?"

"The mansion's security gate just opened."

"No one authorized it."

Everyone turned toward the front windows.

A black SUV rolled slowly up the driveway.

No license plates.

The engine stopped.

The driver's door opened.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.

Richard Carter looked through the rain...

...and all the color drained from his face.

Marcus noticed immediately.

"You know him."

Richard whispered only three words.

May you like

"He shouldn't be here."
