Chapter 14 - The Last Betrayal
They raced back to Alcázar House.
The bassinet was empty.
The police officer guarding the room was unconscious.
Rebeca was gone.
Sebastián felt physically ill.
“No.”
Valeria stared at the empty bassinet.
“Not again.”
A message appeared on Sebastián’s phone.
COME ALONE.
An address followed.
Rebeca’s childhood home.
Sebastián arrived first.
Valeria followed anyway.
Inside, they found Rebeca holding the baby.
She was crying.
“Give her to me.”
Valeria’s voice shook.
Rebeca did.
Immediately.
No resistance.
Valeria held her daughter.
Sebastián stared at his mother.
“Why did you take her?”
“I didn’t.”
“Then who?”
Rebeca looked toward the staircase.
Footsteps sounded above them.
Octavio descended.
Behind him came Ignacio Serrano.
Valeria’s father.
Alive.
Smiling.
“My daughter.”
Valeria stepped backward.
“You don’t get to call me that.”
Ignacio smiled.
“You always were difficult.”
Sebastián moved in front of Valeria.
Ignacio laughed.
“You still think you’re the hero.”
“No.”
Sebastián looked at his wife.
“I know exactly who the hero is.”
Police sirens sounded outside.
Ignacio’s smile disappeared.
Valeria lifted her phone.
Streaming again.
“You taught me something useful.”
Ignacio stared at her.
“What?”
“Never enter a room without evidence.”
