Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Hallway

The woman stepped into the hospital room.

Valeria stopped breathing.

Sebastián stared at her as though someone had just dragged a ghost out of the past.

Her name was Camila Ortega.

Three years earlier, Camila had worked inside the Alcázar residence.

Not as a maid.

Not exactly.

She had been hired as Valeria’s private assistant during the first year of the marriage.

She organized appointments.

Handled correspondence.

Helped with charity events.

And, more importantly, she had been close enough to witness the slow collapse of Valeria’s relationship with Sebastián’s family.

Then one night, Camila disappeared.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Rebeca told everyone she had been caught stealing jewelry.

Octavio produced a signed confession.

Sebastián believed it.

Valeria never did.

And now Camila was standing outside her hospital room.

Alive.

Silent.

And terrified.

“Camila?”

Valeria’s voice barely came out.

Camila looked at her.

For half a second, something passed between the two women.

Recognition.

Fear.

And then something Valeria hadn’t expected.

An apology.

Sebastián stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?”

Camila didn’t answer him.

Her eyes moved toward Rebeca.

Rebeca stood near the door with her handbag against her side.

Perfect posture.

Perfect hair.

Perfect control.

“You wanted proof,” Rebeca said.

“Here it is.”

Sebastián looked from his mother to Camila.

“Proof of what?”

“That your wife has been lying to you.”

Valeria pushed herself higher against the pillows.

Pain shot through her abdomen.

She winced.

Sebastián immediately turned toward her.

“Don’t move.”

“I need to hear this.”

“Valeria—”

“I need to hear it.”

Her voice was stronger now.

Camila lowered her eyes.

Octavio closed the door.

The click sounded much louder than it should have.

Sebastián noticed.

“Why are you closing the door?”

“Privacy,” Octavio said.

Sebastián looked at him.

Something about that answer bothered him.

Everything bothered him now.

The black folder.

The forged signature.

His mother’s calmness.

Camila’s sudden appearance.

The bruises beneath Valeria’s blanket.

And the fact that everyone except him seemed to know what was happening.

He moved toward the table.

“Open the folder.”

Octavio didn’t move.

Sebastián’s voice hardened.

“I said open it.”

Rebeca sighed.

“Sebastián, you are exhausted.”

“I’m not asking you.”

His eyes remained on Octavio.

“Open it.”

Octavio slowly placed the folder on the table.

Then he opened it.

Sebastián began turning through the documents.

Psychiatric evaluation.

Temporary guardianship petition.

Transfer authorization.

Emergency medical proxy.

Temporary custody recommendation.

Every page carried legal language.

Every page seemed designed to remove Valeria from her own life.

Then Sebastián found another page.

He stopped.

“What is this?”

Octavio looked at it.

“A preliminary statement.”

“From Camila?”

“Yes.”

Sebastián read the first line.

His jaw tightened.

The statement claimed Valeria had suffered violent emotional episodes before her pregnancy.

It claimed she had thrown objects.

Threatened household staff.

Made accusations against Rebeca.

Become paranoid.

And once deliberately injured herself before blaming another person.

Sebastián looked up.

“Camila wrote this?”

Rebeca answered.

“She witnessed it.”

Sebastián turned toward Camila.

“Did you?”

Camila’s lips parted.

No sound came out.

Rebeca’s eyes narrowed.

“Answer him.”

Camila looked at Valeria.

Valeria’s face had gone white.

“Tell him.”

Camila swallowed.

“Yes.”

The word shattered the room.

Valeria closed her eyes.

Sebastián stared at Camila.

“Yes what?”

“Yes.”

Camila’s voice trembled.

“I saw Valeria hurt herself.”

Sebastián turned toward his wife.

Valeria slowly opened her eyes.

“That’s a lie.”

Camila flinched.

Rebeca gave a quiet sigh.

“This is what I have been trying to tell you.”

“Stop.”

Sebastián raised a hand.

His mother went silent.

He looked at Camila again.

“When?”

Camila hesitated.

“Three years ago.”

“Where?”

“At the house.”

“Which room?”

Camila looked confused.

“The upstairs hallway.”

Valeria suddenly spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“It wasn’t upstairs.”

Camila froze.

Valeria stared directly at her.

“You remember that night, don’t you?”

Camila said nothing.

Valeria’s breathing became heavier.

“You remember exactly where it happened.”

“Valeria,” Rebeca warned.

But Valeria ignored her.

“It happened beside the greenhouse.”

Camila’s face changed.

Sebastián saw it.

Only for an instant.

But he saw it.

“You said upstairs.”

Camila looked at him.

“I—I may be remembering incorrectly.”

“You just testified that you watched my wife injure herself.”

Sebastián stepped closer.

“But you can’t remember where?”

“It was three years ago.”

Valeria laughed softly.

That same broken laugh.

“No.”

She looked at Camila.

“You remember.”

Camila’s eyes filled with tears.

“Please.”

Valeria’s expression changed.

“Please what?”

Camila looked toward Rebeca.

That was the mistake.

Sebastián followed her gaze.

His mother’s expression remained calm.

But her fingers had tightened around her handbag.

Sebastián noticed.

“Why did you look at my mother?”

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

“Sebastián,” Rebeca said.

He turned on her.

“Don’t.”

Rebeca stopped.

It was perhaps the first time in his life he had spoken to her that way.

Camila began backing toward the door.

“I shouldn’t have come.”

Octavio moved subtly into her path.

Sebastián saw that too.

“Let her leave.”

Octavio smiled.

“Of course.”

But he didn’t move.

Sebastián stepped toward him.

“I said move.”

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then Octavio stepped aside.

Camila reached for the door.

Valeria spoke.

“Camila.”

Camila stopped.

“You had a red scarf that night.”

Camila’s hand remained on the handle.

Valeria continued.

“You wrapped it around my leg.”

Sebastián looked at his wife.

“What?”

Camila’s shoulders began trembling.

“You found me behind the greenhouse.”

Valeria’s voice cracked.

“You were crying harder than I was.”

“Stop.”

Camila whispered it.

“You told me you were sorry.”

“Valeria, stop.”

“You told me you had seen everything.”

“Please stop.”

“You told me Rebeca would destroy both of us if anyone knew.”

“STOP!”

Camila screamed.

The room fell silent.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

Sebastián stared at her.

Rebeca’s face hardened.

Camila turned.

She looked at Sebastián.

Then at Valeria.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I didn’t want to do this.”

Octavio stepped forward.

“Camila.”

She backed away from him.

“No.”

“Think carefully.”

“I have.”

Octavio’s voice became colder.

“You signed a statement.”

Camila shook her head.

“You made me sign it.”

Sebastián felt the air leave his lungs.

“What did you say?”

Rebeca stepped toward Camila.

“That’s enough.”

Camila pulled away.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You said you would leave my brother alone.”

Octavio’s face changed.

Sebastián looked at him.

“What does her brother have to do with this?”

Camila reached into her coat.

Octavio moved instantly.

“Don’t.”

Sebastián stepped between them.

“Back away from her.”

Camila pulled out a small envelope.

It was old.

Creased.

The paper had yellowed slightly along the edges.

She held it toward Valeria.

“I kept it.”

Valeria stared at the envelope.

“What is that?”

“The thing I should have given you three years ago.”

Rebeca lunged.

Sebastián caught his mother’s wrist before she reached it.

Everyone froze.

Rebeca stared at her son.

“Let go of me.”

Sebastián didn’t.

“What’s in the envelope?”

Nobody answered.

Sebastián looked at Camila.

“What is it?”

Camila slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Valeria’s eyes widened.

Sebastián looked confused.

Camila’s voice dropped to almost a whisper.

“The greenhouse camera.”

Rebeca went completely still.

Camila held up the card.

“It recorded what happened that night.”

Valeria stared at her.

“You told me the camera was broken.”

“That’s what they made me tell you.”

Sebastián looked at his mother.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in Rebeca’s eyes.

Not anger.

Not irritation.

Fear.

Sebastián released her wrist.

He turned back to Camila.

“Give it to me.”

Octavio immediately spoke.

“You should be very careful.”

Sebastián ignored him.

“Camila.”

She placed the card into Sebastián’s palm.

His fingers closed around it.

Valeria began crying silently.

Sebastián looked at the tiny piece of plastic in his hand.

Three years.

Three years of arguments.

Three years of accusations.

Three years of believing his wife was unstable.

Three years of allowing his mother to explain everything.

And now the truth might fit inside something smaller than his thumbnail.

He looked toward the television mounted on the wall.

Then toward his laptop bag.

“I have an adapter.”

Rebeca stepped forward.

“Sebastián.”

He ignored her.

He pulled out his laptop.

Octavio watched silently.

Sebastián inserted the memory card.

A folder appeared.

CAM_07.

He opened it.

There was one video.

The date was from three years earlier.

Valeria covered her mouth.

“That’s the night.”

Sebastián clicked play.

The footage was dark.

Grainy.

A garden path appeared.

Then Valeria entered the frame.

Younger.

Barefoot.

Wearing a pale dress.

She was running.

Sebastián leaned closer.

Someone appeared behind her.

A second figure.

Then another.

Valeria reached the greenhouse.

She turned.

Even without sound, the terror on her face was unmistakable.

Someone grabbed her.

She fell.

Sebastián stopped breathing.

The figure moved into the light.

Valeria whispered,

“Oh my God.”

Sebastián stared at the screen.

Because the person standing over his wife was not Rebeca.

It was not Octavio.

It was someone Sebastián trusted even more.

Someone who had been inside the hospital that very night.

Someone who had been helping decide what happened to Valeria and the baby.

The hospital door suddenly opened.

A doctor stepped inside.

The same doctor from two hours earlier.

Dr. Arturo Mena.

Sebastián slowly looked from the laptop screen to the man standing in front of him.

Dr. Mena saw the video.

His face drained of color.

And Sebastián finally understood.

The conspiracy had never begun with his mother.

It had begun much closer to Valeria.

And whatever happened three years ago was still happening now.

Only this time, there was a newborn child involved.
