Chapter 9: The Choice of Ghost

The countdown continued.
One hour.
Fifty-nine minutes.
Fifty-eight minutes.
Every second felt heavier.
Arthur stood in the center of the command room.
For years, he believed Ghost Protocol existed to protect people.
Now he wondered if every secret he buried had only allowed something worse to grow.
Lily approached him.
“You’re blaming yourself.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Shouldn’t I?”
“No.”
“You don’t know what I created.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I know what you did afterward.”
Arthur looked confused.
“You came when I called.”
That sentence hurt more than anger.
Because it was simple.
Because it was true.
Lily continued.
“You spent fifteen years believing I hated you.”
“I did.”
“I didn’t.”
Arthur looked at her.
“I was scared.”
He said nothing.
“I thought you abandoned me.”
“I thought you abandoned me.”
They both looked away.
For the first time in years, they understood each other.
Not completely.
But enough.
Behind them, Evelyn watched.
A mother seeing her family reconnect after losing everything.
Then the alarms started.
Victoria looked at the screens.
“Richard found us.”
Security cameras activated.
The hospital entrance.
Hundreds of armed men.
Richard had arrived.
Arthur grabbed his weapon.
“How many?”
Victoria checked.
“Too many.”
Rourke smiled slightly.
“Good.”
Arthur looked at him.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“No.”
Rourke loaded his rifle.
“I just missed having a reason to fight.”
The doors exploded inward.
Gunfire filled the corridor.
Arthur moved with Rourke.
For the first time in seventeen years, Ghost operated together again.
Echo.
Rook.
Vesper.
Three legends who were supposed to be dead.
They fought through the hallways.
Not like soldiers.
Like ghosts.
Richard’s forces pushed closer.
Then Richard appeared on the main screen.
“You always loved dramatic entrances.”
Arthur fired at the camera.
Richard laughed.
“You cannot kill a system through a camera.”
Arthur looked at the countdown.
“You’re afraid.”
Richard smiled.
“Of you?”
“No.”
Arthur looked at Noah.
“You’re afraid of him.”
Richard’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Arthur saw it.
“You spent years controlling everyone.”
Richard stayed silent.
“But Noah is the one person you cannot predict.”
The silence confirmed it.
Richard’s greatest weakness.
Uncertainty.
Richard’s voice became colder.
“Bring him to me.”
“No.”
Arthur looked toward Noah.
The boy stood frightened.
But he did not run.
Richard spoke again.
“You don’t understand what he is.”
Arthur answered:
“Yes.”
A pause.
“He’s a child.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You are exactly why humanity fails.”
“No.”
Arthur looked at the screens.
“You are why.”
The command room doors shook.
Richard’s forces were seconds away.
Victoria approached Noah.
She handed him a small device.
“What is this?”
“The original Ghost key.”
Arthur looked at her.
“You had it?”
Victoria nodded.
“My father gave it to me.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew one day someone would need to choose.”
Noah looked at the device.
“What choice?”
Victoria answered:
“Whether humanity deserves to know the truth.”
The doors exploded.
Richard’s soldiers entered.
Arthur fired.
Chaos erupted.
Richard entered behind them.
Calm.
Untouched.
He looked at Noah.
“There you are.”
Arthur stepped between them.
Richard smiled.
“You always stand in front of people.”
“Yes.”
“That’s why you lose.”
Arthur looked at him.
“No.”
He raised his weapon.
“That’s why I win.”
Richard nodded.
“Predictable.”
He pressed a button.
The command room screens activated.
A new message appeared.
ORPHEUS HAS SELECTED.
Everyone froze.
The system processed.
Analyzing.
Analyzing.
Analyzing.
Then:
PRIMARY AUTHORITY:
NOAH MILLER.
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
The lights went dark.
A voice echoed.
Not Richard.
Not Victoria.
Not Evelyn.
The system.
“Human unpredictability detected.”
Everyone froze.
“Authority rejected.”
Richard stared.
“What?”
The voice continued.
“Operator Richard Whitmore: rejected.”
Arthur looked at Noah.
The boy held the Ghost key.
The system had chosen him.
Richard stepped forward.
“Noah.”
The boy backed away.
Richard’s face changed.
The perfect mask disappeared.
For the first time…
He looked afraid.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
Noah looked at Arthur.
Arthur nodded.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
The system spoke again.
“Final decision required.”
The screens displayed two options.
CONTROL.
DELETE.
Victoria whispered:
“This is what my father wanted.”
Arthur looked at Noah.
The entire world waited.
The boy looked at the machine that had controlled millions.
Then he pressed one button.
DELETE.
Every screen went black.
The countdown stopped.
00:00:00.
Richard collapsed backward.
“No…”
The room shook.
Servers began shutting down.
Victoria stared.
“It’s over.”
But Arthur noticed something.
One screen remained active.
A single message appeared.
NOT ALL COPIES DESTROYED.
Arthur walked closer.
The final line appeared.
BACKUP LOCATION:
WHITMORE ESTATE.
Richard smiled weakly.
“You thought you won.”
Arthur looked at him.
Richard whispered:
“You only destroyed the first ghost.”
The screen went black.
May you like
And somewhere beneath the Whitmore estate…
A server began powering on.
