Chapter 13: The Last Ghost

Three weeks after the fall of Richard Whitmore, the world was still trying to understand what had happened.

The Whitmore empire collapsed faster than anyone imagined.

Banks froze accounts.

Government agencies reopened old investigations.

Executives who had spent years hiding behind wealth and influence suddenly found themselves answering questions they thought would never be asked.

But Arthur Miller knew something nobody else knew.

The war was not over.

Because Orpheus had left behind a ghost.

The old command room beneath the Whitmore estate remained sealed.

No one entered except Arthur, Evelyn, Rourke, and Mara.

The world believed the system had been restored.

They were wrong.

Arthur stood in front of the remaining terminal.

The screen still displayed the same message.

PROJECT ORPHEUS:

SECONDARY CONTINGENCY.

STATUS:

WAITING.

Mara studied the code.

“I have analyzed this for three days.”

Arthur looked at her.

“And?”

“It’s not connected to the main Orpheus network.”

Rourke frowned.

“Then how is it active?”

Mara looked at the screen.

“Because it was never supposed to be connected.”

Arthur understood.

“It was hidden.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Thomas didn’t create this.”

Everyone looked at her.

Arthur noticed something.

She was not surprised.

“You know what it is.”

Evelyn remained silent.

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“Evelyn.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know what it was meant for.”

“Then tell us.”

A long pause.

“The first Ghost Protocol was never a military emergency system.”

Arthur looked confused.

“What?”

“It was a safeguard.”

“For what?”

Evelyn looked at the screen.

“For Orpheus itself.”

Nobody spoke.

Mara crossed her arms.

“Explain.”

Evelyn walked toward the terminal.

“When Arthur designed the original system, he included a failsafe.”

Arthur shook his head.

“I never created a failsafe.”

“Yes, you did.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You just didn’t know it survived.”

Arthur stared.

“What are you saying?”

She opened an old file.

A name appeared.

PROJECT GHOST.

CREATOR:

JAMES MILLER.

Arthur froze.

His father.

Again.

“My father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Your father knew Thomas would eventually corrupt Orpheus.”

Arthur looked at the file.

“So he created Ghost Protocol.”

“Yes.”

“Not me.”

“No.”

Arthur stepped back.

For decades, he believed Ghost was his creation.

His responsibility.

His burden.

But it belonged to someone else.

His father had seen the danger first.

“He tried to stop Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“And Thomas killed him.”

Evelyn nodded.

Arthur looked at the screen.

The entire story changed.

His father was not part of the problem.

He was the first person who tried to solve it.

“What does the contingency do?”

Evelyn entered another code.

The screen changed.

A recording appeared.

A man sat in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

Arthur recognized him instantly.

James Miller.

His father.

Arthur stopped breathing.

The recording began.

“If you are seeing this, it means Orpheus survived.”

Arthur stepped closer.

His father’s voice filled the room.

“I always knew someone would try to turn information into power.”

James looked directly into the camera.

“That is why I created Ghost.”

A pause.

“Not to control the world.”

“To protect it.”

Arthur watched silently.

His father continued.

“Arthur, if you are watching this…”

His voice softened.

“I am sorry.”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

“You inherited a war you never started.”

The recording continued.

“I wanted to protect you from this life.”

A sad smile.

“But people like Thomas Whitmore do not allow good people to walk away.”

The screen flickered.

James looked more serious.

“The final Ghost Protocol requires something Orpheus never understood.”

A pause.

“Human choice.”

The recording ended.

The room remained silent.

No one moved.

Then Noah spoke.

“That's why it chose me.”

Everyone looked at him.

The boy stood beside the terminal.

Arthur knelt.

“What do you mean?”

Noah touched the screen.

“The system couldn’t decide because it wasn’t supposed to.”

Arthur frowned.

“It needed someone.”

“Yes.”

“Someone who wasn’t trained.”

Noah nodded.

“Someone who didn’t want power.”

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

She understood too.

Thomas created Orpheus to predict humans.

Richard used it to control humans.

But James designed Ghost to trust humans.

The terminal activated.

A new message appeared.

FINAL OPERATOR IDENTIFIED.

NOAH MILLER.

Arthur looked at Noah.

The boy looked afraid.

“What happens now?”

Arthur placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Whatever you choose.”

The screen displayed two options.

GUARD.

OR

DESTROY.

Noah stared.

Then he asked:

“If I choose guard… does that mean I become responsible for it?”

Arthur answered honestly.

“Yes.”

“And if I destroy it?”

“Some truths may disappear.”

Noah looked at the screen.

A child deciding the fate of the most powerful system ever created.

Then he smiled slightly.

“I think my answer is both.”

Everyone looked confused.

Noah pressed the keyboard.

A third option appeared.

REBUILD.

Mara whispered:

“He created a third path.”

Arthur smiled faintly.

“Because he wasn’t programmed.”

May you like

The system processed.

ACCEPTED.
