Chapter 10: Return to the Whitmore Estate

The Whitmore estate had never looked more beautiful.

That was what disturbed Arthur Miller the most.

The gardens were still perfect.

The white flowers still lined the stone pathway.

The enormous mansion still stood beneath the night sky like a monument to power.

But Arthur knew what was hidden beneath it.

Secrets.

Bodies.

Files.

A machine that had spent decades learning how to control human lives.

The place looked peaceful because evil rarely announced itself.

It simply built better walls.

The black vehicles stopped at the edge of the property.

Arthur sat in the passenger seat.

Beside him, Lily checked the small device Victoria had given Noah.

The boy sat quietly in the back.

Too quiet.

Arthur noticed.

“You okay?”

Noah looked out the window.

“Everyone keeps saying I’m important.”

Arthur waited.

“But nobody asks what I want.”

The sentence hit him.

Because it sounded exactly like Lily fifteen years earlier.

Arthur turned around.

“What do you want?”

Noah looked surprised.

Nobody had asked him that.

“I want everything to stop.”

Arthur nodded.

“Then that’s what we fight for.”

Noah looked at him.

“Even if I’m the reason?”

Arthur answered immediately.

“You are not the reason.”

A pause.

“You are the person we’re protecting.”

Across from them, Evelyn watched silently.

She looked older than before.

Not because of years.

Because of guilt.

Arthur noticed.

“You need to tell me everything before we go inside.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“There isn’t enough time.”

“There hasn’t been enough time for seventeen years.”

The words hurt.

But she accepted them.

Evelyn looked down.

“The night of Hawthorne…”

Everyone became silent.

“I did not disappear because I wanted to.”

Arthur waited.

“Thomas Whitmore discovered I had copied the Orpheus shutdown code.”

“You stole it.”

“I protected it.”

“You built another system.”

“Yes.”

Arthur looked away.

“I still don’t know if I can forgive that.”

“I know.”

Evelyn continued.

“But before the explosion, Thomas activated a failsafe.”

“What kind?”

“A command that would transfer Orpheus control to the highest surviving authority.”

Rourke frowned.

“That should have been Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“But he died.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And Richard inherited everything.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Then why did you fake your death?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because Thomas had another plan.”

“What?”

“He knew Richard would become the operator.”

A cold feeling moved through Arthur.

“Thomas wanted Richard to have Orpheus.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Because Thomas believed Richard was the perfect test.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Test for what?”

“To see whether a human could become completely controlled by power.”

Arthur understood.

Thomas Whitmore did not create Richard.

He created the conditions that made Richard.

A machine.

A human experiment.

And Richard passed.

The mansion lights suddenly turned on.

Every window illuminated.

A message appeared across the entrance:

WELCOME HOME, ARTHUR.

Lily stared.

“He knows we’re here.”

Victoria stepped out of the vehicle.

“Of course he does.”

Arthur looked at her.

“You brought us here.”

Victoria smiled.

“I brought you to the only place where Richard is vulnerable.”

She pointed beneath the mansion.

“The original Orpheus chamber.”

Arthur checked his weapon.

“And you know the way.”

“I lived here.”

The group moved forward.

The front doors opened by themselves.

No guards.

No resistance.

That frightened Arthur more than an ambush.

Inside, the mansion was empty.

Too empty.

They entered the grand salon.

The same room where Lily had been attacked.

The same room where everyone watched.

The same room where nobody helped.

Arthur stopped.

Lily noticed.

“You’re remembering.”

“Yes.”

She looked around.

“I remember too.”

Arthur looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not coming sooner.”

Lily shook her head.

“You came when I needed you.”

Arthur looked at her.

“That should have been years ago.”

Before she could answer, a voice filled the room.

Richard.

“Beautiful.”

Everyone turned.

A large screen descended from the ceiling.

Richard appeared.

But he looked different.

Tired.

Angry.

Human.

“You finally returned.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Come out.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

“Afraid?”

Richard laughed softly.

“After everything, you still think this is about courage.”

The screen changed.

Thousands of files appeared.

“Do you know why I won for so long?”

Nobody answered.

“Because people don’t actually want truth.”

Richard looked directly at Lily.

“They want comfort.”

Lily stared.

“You destroyed my life.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“I gave you a life where you never had to face the truth.”

“You isolated me.”

“I protected you.”

Arthur stepped closer.

“You sound like every abuser who ever existed.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, anger appeared.

“You know nothing about sacrifice.”

Arthur looked at him.

“I know exactly what sacrifice looks like.”

Richard leaned closer.

“Do you?”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

ARTHUR MILLER — CLASSIFIED FAMILY FILE.

Arthur froze.

Richard smiled.

“Your father did not die naturally.”

The room went silent.

Arthur stared.

“What?”

“Your father discovered what Thomas Whitmore was building.”

Victoria looked away.

Arthur noticed.

“You knew.”

Victoria remained silent.

Arthur’s voice became dangerous.

“You knew.”

Victoria finally spoke.

“Yes.”

“Who killed him?”

Nobody answered.

Then Richard did.

“Your mother.”

The room exploded into silence.

Arthur stepped backward.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Ask Evelyn.”

Arthur turned.

Evelyn looked devastated.

“Arthur…”

“Tell me he’s lying.”

May you like

She couldn’t.

That was the answer.
