Chapter 4: The Son They Erased

The corridor remained silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Arthur Miller stared at the child standing beside Chief Malcolm Danner.

The boy was small.

Too small to understand the war happening around him.

He wore an old gray sweater.

His hair was messy.

His face was pale with fear.

But his eyes…

Arthur knew those eyes.

They were the same eyes he saw every morning in the mirror.

The same eyes Evelyn had.

The same eyes Lily had inherited.

“Who is he?” Arthur asked again.

Danner smiled.

“Richard wanted you to ask that question.”

Arthur raised his weapon.

“I asked you.”

Danner tightened his grip.

The boy flinched.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Malcolm.”

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Broken.

“Let him go.”

Danner laughed.

“After seventeen years, you finally care about him?”

Lily looked at Evelyn.

“What is he talking about?”

Evelyn said nothing.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Arthur turned toward her.

“Evelyn.”

She closed her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“After we stopped Richard.”

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t get to decide when I learn about my own family.”

The boy looked at Arthur.

“Are you my father?”

The question froze the entire room.

Lily looked at Arthur.

Rourke lowered his weapon.

Even Danner seemed surprised by the boy’s honesty.

Arthur stared.

He had no answer.

Because for the first time in seventeen years…

He was afraid of the truth.

Evelyn stepped between them.

“His name is Noah.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Noah?”

“He was born eight months after Hawthorne.”

Arthur’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought you were dead,” Evelyn whispered.

The words hit harder than any bullet.

Arthur remembered the hospital.

The funeral.

The empty coffin.

The years of grief.

“You moved on.”

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice cracked.

“I survived.”

Danner interrupted.

“How touching.”

He stepped backward.

“But we don’t have time for family reunions.”

Rourke raised his weapon.

“Drop the gun.”

Danner smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

He lifted the black key around his neck.

“The override belongs to me.”

Evelyn looked at the key.

“You stole it.”

“No.”

Danner looked at Arthur.

“Your wife gave it to me.”

Arthur turned.

“Evelyn?”

She shook her head.

“Not willingly.”

Danner laughed.

“That’s always the excuse.”

He pressed a button on the key.

The corridor lights changed.

The facility doors locked.

A mechanical voice echoed.

“ORPHEUS AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.”

Arthur looked around.

“You built this system?”

Evelyn answered.

“No.”

She looked at Danner.

“He did.”

Danner smiled.

“Thomas Whitmore designed the first version.”

The name changed everything.

Arthur remembered the photograph.

Thomas Whitmore.

The man who pretended to be a commander.

The man who betrayed them.

“The boy,” Arthur said.

Danner looked at Noah.

“Thomas’s grandson.”

Arthur stared.

“No.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Noah is not Richard’s family.”

Danner smiled.

“Not by blood.”

He looked at Arthur.

“But Richard raised him to believe he was.”

Lily looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn answered.

“Richard needed an heir.”

Arthur looked at Noah.

“And he used this child?”

Danner’s smile disappeared.

“He used everyone.”

Noah looked at Evelyn.

“Why did you leave me?”

The question was quiet.

But it destroyed her.

Evelyn reached toward him.

“I never left you.”

“You were gone.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Evelyn looked at Arthur.

“From Richard.”

Arthur finally understood.

The boy was not a weapon.

He was a witness.

A living piece of evidence Richard could never erase.

Danner moved toward the elevator.

“Enough.”

Rourke fired.

Danner pulled Noah in front of him.

Arthur reacted instantly.

He pushed Rourke’s arm upward.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Everyone froze.

Arthur looked at Danner.

“You know I won’t risk him.”

Danner smiled.

“That is why Richard chose him.”

Arthur lowered his weapon.

“Where is Richard?”

Danner laughed.

“You still think you are chasing him.”

He pressed the key again.

A screen appeared.

Richard Whitmore appeared on camera.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

No panic.

“Arthur.”

The voice echoed through the facility.

“You always were predictable.”

Arthur stared at the screen.

Richard continued.

“You spent seventeen years preparing for revenge.”

A pause.

“But you never prepared for forgiveness.”

Lily stepped closer.

“Richard.”

His eyes moved toward her.

“Lily.”

She froze.

The way he said her name was not angry.

It was almost affectionate.

That made it worse.

“You were always my greatest mistake.”

Lily’s face tightened.

“You married me because of my father.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“I married you because of your mother.”

Evelyn went still.

Arthur noticed.

“What does that mean?”

Richard continued.

“Ask Evelyn what happened the night she disappeared.”

The screen went black.

The facility shook.

An explosion somewhere above them.

Danner looked toward the ceiling.

“Richard started the purge.”

Evelyn grabbed Noah.

“We have to move.”

May you like

They ran.

Behind them, the underground facility began collapsing.
