Chapter 11: The Last Confession

The mansion became silent.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
The woman he loved.
The woman he buried.
The woman who had returned.
And once again, she was hiding something.
“Did you kill my father?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
Arthur stared.
“Then why can’t you say it?”
“Because I failed him.”
Richard interrupted.
“Failure is just a nicer word for betrayal.”
Arthur ignored him.
“Evelyn.”
She took a breath.
“Your father was investigating Thomas.”
Arthur listened.
“He discovered Thomas was using Orpheus to manipulate elections, companies, governments.”
“That sounds familiar.”
“Yes.”
“Then what happened?”
Evelyn looked down.
“Your father confronted him.”
“And?”
“Thomas threatened him.”
“With what?”
“With you.”
Arthur froze.
“Me?”
“Thomas knew you wanted to join intelligence.”
“He used my future.”
“Yes.”
“He controlled my father.”
“Yes.”
Arthur’s hands tightened.
“Then how did he die?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Thomas ordered it.”
Richard smiled.
“Half true.”
Arthur looked at the screen.
“What?”
Richard opened another file.
A recording appeared.
Evelyn’s voice.
Years earlier.
“We cannot let James expose everything.”
Arthur stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“We have to stop him.”
The audio ended.
Lily looked at Evelyn.
“Mom…”
Evelyn shook her head.
“It was manipulated.”
Richard laughed.
“You always say that.”
Arthur looked at Victoria.
“Can you verify it?”
Victoria hesitated.
That was enough.
Arthur stepped away.
Everyone was lying.
Everyone had been lying.
Richard.
Evelyn.
Rourke.
Even the truth itself had become a weapon.
Noah approached him.
“Mr. Miller.”
Arthur looked down.
“What?”
The boy held the Ghost key.
“I think I know what happened.”
Everyone looked at him.
Noah pointed toward the mansion floor.
“Something is underneath us.”
Victoria frowned.
“How do you know?”
“I don’t know.”
Noah touched his head.
“I feel it.”
Evelyn went pale.
“Orpheus.”
Arthur understood.
The system was communicating.
Not controlling.
Communicating.
They followed Noah through the mansion.
He stopped in front of an old fireplace.
“There.”
Arthur examined the wall.
Hidden mechanism.
The fireplace moved.
A staircase descended.
Below was the original Orpheus chamber.
The first one.
Older.
Smaller.
Built before Hawthorne.
At the center was a single computer.
No servers.
No machines.
Just one terminal.
Arthur approached.
The screen turned on.
A message appeared.
WELCOME, ECHO.
Arthur touched the keyboard.
A file opened.
PROJECT ORPHEUS — ORIGINAL PURPOSE.
He read.
Then froze.
“What?”
Lily stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Arthur looked at everyone.
“The system was never created to control people.”
Victoria frowned.
“What?”
Arthur continued reading.
“It was created to expose corruption.”
Silence.
Richard’s expression changed.
“No.”
Arthur turned toward the screen.
“The first version analyzed evidence.”
Mara stepped closer.
“It found patterns.”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
“It identified criminals.”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked confused.
“Then how did it become this?”
Arthur scrolled down.
A second file opened.
MODIFICATION AUTHORIZED BY:
THOMAS WHITMORE.
The room changed.
Thomas had corrupted it.
Not created it.
Richard had inherited a weapon.
But Thomas had built the weapon.
Arthur looked at Victoria.
“Your father.”
She looked away.
Richard stepped forward.
“You still don’t understand.”
Arthur turned.
“You were never the creator.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
A pause.
“I was the only one who understood it.”
The system suddenly activated.
Every screen in the chamber turned on.
A countdown appeared.
00:45:00.
Richard looked shocked.
“What?”
The voice spoke.
“Unauthorized operator detected.”
Richard froze.
Arthur looked at him.
“The system rejected you.”
“No.”
Richard moved toward the terminal.
“No.”
The machine continued.
“Original purpose restoration initiated.”
Victoria stared.
“It’s choosing.”
Arthur looked at Noah.
“No.”
Noah shook his head.
“I didn’t do anything.”
The system answered:
“Human decision required.”
A message appeared.
RESTORE.
OR.
ERASE.
Arthur looked at the options.
The entire future depended on a choice.
Then Richard did something nobody expected.
He pulled a weapon.
And aimed it at Noah.
“Enough.”
Everyone froze.
Arthur raised his gun.
“Richard.”
Richard’s face was broken.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Desperate.
“I spent my entire life building this.”
“You destroyed lives.”
“I created order!”
“No.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“You created fear.”
Richard’s hand shook.
“Give me the boy.”
“No.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“You still don’t understand.”
He looked at Noah.
“I’m not afraid of him.”
May you like
A pause.
“I’m afraid of what happens when he chooses.”
