Chapter 8: The Original Ghost

They moved deeper into the hospital.
Victoria was not their prisoner.
She was their problem.
Arthur hated that.
But he knew something worse.
She knew things they needed.
The command room was hidden beneath the hospital.
An old security door opened using Victoria’s fingerprint.
Inside were hundreds of monitors.
Maps.
Files.
Names.
The entire world connected by invisible strings.
Mara stared.
“This is impossible.”
Victoria walked past her.
“No.”
She touched the screen.
“It is simply something nobody wanted to admit.”
Arthur watched her.
“You built this?”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Your father did.”
Arthur froze.
“My father?”
Victoria smiled.
“Not biologically.”
She opened a file.
A photograph appeared.
A younger man.
Arthur recognized him.
His own father.
James Miller.
A government intelligence officer.
“What is this?”
“Your father worked with Thomas Whitmore.”
Arthur shook his head.
“No.”
“He helped create the first predictive models.”
“My father was a soldier.”
“He was both.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Why didn’t I know?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Because Thomas erased him.”
The room became quiet.
Arthur had spent his entire life believing his father was a simple military man.
A hero.
A victim.
Now he was discovering another hidden layer.
Lily watched him.
“Dad?”
Arthur ignored the pain.
“Why show me this?”
Victoria answered:
“Because you are the only person who can destroy Orpheus.”
“Why?”
“Because you are the only one who knows what it was meant to be.”
Arthur looked at Noah.
“And him?”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“He is the final evolution.”
Noah stepped back.
“I’m not a machine.”
Victoria looked at him.
“No.”
Her voice softened.
“You are the proof that humans are more unpredictable than any algorithm.”
Arthur noticed something.
Victoria did not hate Noah.
She feared him.
“Why?”
Victoria looked at the screens.
“Because my father spent his entire life trying to eliminate human uncertainty.”
She looked at Noah.
“And then you were born.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Leave him alone.”
Victoria turned.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“You saved him because you thought he was the answer.”
A pause.
“He is actually the question.”
The countdown continued.
02:58:10.
Arthur looked at the system.
“How do we stop it?”
Victoria opened a hidden file.
Three names appeared.
ECHO.
VESPER.
ROOK.
Arthur.
Evelyn.
Rourke.
Below them:
FINAL AUTHENTICATION.
NOAH MILLER.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
“You put his name there?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Victoria answered.
“My father.”
Arthur looked at Noah.
“Thomas planned this?”
“Yes.”
“Twenty years ago?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Because Orpheus was never designed to predict the future.”
The lights dimmed.
“It was designed to create it.”
A message appeared.
FINAL PHASE READY.
Arthur stared.
“What does that mean?”
Victoria whispered:
“Richard was never the final enemy.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The system was.”
Suddenly every screen changed.
A face appeared.
Richard Whitmore.
But he was not in his office.
He was inside a secure room.
Behind him were servers.
Thousands of lights.
“You finally figured it out.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“Richard.”
Richard smiled.
“Hello, Arthur.”
“You’re inside the command center.”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked shocked.
“How?”
Richard smiled.
“Because I was never outside the system.”
The screens changed.
A file opened.
RICHARD WHITMORE.
STATUS:
ORPHEUS PRIMARY OPERATOR.
Victoria stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.”
Richard laughed.
“You still think my father built Orpheus.”
Arthur looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
Richard smiled.
“My father started it.”
A pause.
“But I finished it.”
The screens displayed years of data.
Richard’s entire life.
Every decision.
Every move.
Arthur understood.
“You used Orpheus on yourself.”
Richard nodded.
“I became the perfect operator.”
Lily looked horrified.
“You manipulated your own life?”
Richard smiled.
“I optimized it.”
Victoria whispered:
“He turned himself into the system.”
Richard looked at her.
“Almost.”
The final file opened.
A DNA sequence.
Arthur saw the name.
NOAH MILLER.
Richard continued.
“The final upgrade requires one thing.”
Arthur already knew.
“Noah.”
Richard smiled.
“Bring me my brother.”
The transmission ended.
Arthur turned toward Victoria.
“You knew.”
Victoria looked away.
“What?”
“You knew Richard wanted Noah.”
“Yes.”
“And you brought us here anyway.”
Victoria did not answer.
Arthur raised his weapon.
“Why?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Because Richard is not the only person who wants the boy.”
The room became silent.
“Who else?”
Victoria looked at the screens.
The answer appeared.
ORPHEUS AUTONOMOUS MODE.
ACTIVATION IN:
01:59:59.
May you like
Victoria whispered:
“The system itself.”
