Chapter 5 - THE ARCHIVE THAT COULD DESTROY THEM ALL

The staircase opened completely.
Heat rushed upward.
Victor smelled smoke.
Adrian looked down.
“The purge already started.”
Victor turned to Lily.
“Get Ethan out.”
Lily nodded.
Serena stepped in front of the side door.
“It’s locked.”
Victor looked toward Richard.
“Open it.”
Richard laughed.
“No.”
Victor aimed the gun at his injured shoulder.
“I won’t ask twice.”
Richard stared at him.
“You can kill me.”
“The locks still won’t open.”
Adrian grabbed Richard’s coat.
“Override code.”
Richard smiled.
“You think I memorized it?”
Adrian slammed him against the wall.
“You built the system.”
“I built many things.”
Evelyn stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Adrian looked at her.
“He murdered our parents.”
“I know.”
“He imprisoned you.”
“I know.”
“He destroyed our family.”
“I know.”
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“Then move.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“If you kill him, we lose the one person who knows how this house works.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Victor looked toward the stairs.
Four minutes and forty seconds.
He made a decision.
“Serena.”
She looked at him.
“You know the security system?”
“Some of it.”
“Can you open the chapel doors?”
“Maybe.”
“Do it.”
She hesitated.
Victor stepped closer.
“Now.”
Serena ran toward the control panel.
Lily stayed beside Ethan.
Victor gave her the gun.
Lily stared.
“I don’t—”
“Point it at Richard.”
She looked at the weapon.
Then at Richard.
Richard smiled.
Victor said quietly.
“If he moves, shout.”
Lily nodded.
Victor looked at Ethan.
“Stay with her.”
Ethan grabbed his sleeve.
“Dad.”
Victor crouched.
“I’m coming back.”
Ethan’s eyes searched his.
“You promise?”
Victor looked toward the archive.
He hated promises now.
Too many people had used them as lies.
So he said something else.
“I’m going to do everything I can.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
Victor stood.
Evelyn moved beside him.
“I’m going with you.”
“No.”
Her eyes flashed.
“That archive belongs to my family.”
“And Ethan needs his mother.”
“So does he need his father.”
Victor looked at her.
They both knew there was no winning that argument.
Adrian stepped forward.
“I’m coming too.”
Victor stared at him.
Adrian’s wounded arm hung stiffly at his side.
“You can barely stand.”
“I’ve waited twenty-six years for this.”
Victor nodded once.
“Fine.”
They descended.
The stairs led into a concrete corridor.
Smoke rolled along the ceiling.
Red lights flashed.
Victor held the two pendants in one hand.
At the end of the corridor stood a circular steel vault door.
Two matching slots were built into it.
Sun.
Moon.
Victor inserted both keys.
Nothing happened.
Adrian frowned.
“Turn them together.”
Victor looked at Evelyn.
She took the moon key.
Adrian took the sun.
They turned.
CLICK.
The vault opened.
Victor stared inside.
Rows of shelves stretched into darkness.
Thousands of boxes.
Hard drives.
Binders.
Photographs.
Old film reels.
Ledger books.
It looked less like a family archive than the evidence room of a government agency.
Evelyn stepped inside.
Her face broke.
“My grandfather.”
Victor looked toward her.
She pointed to a desk.
A framed photograph sat there.
An elderly man with Evelyn as a child.
Adrian joined her.
Neither spoke.
They did not have time.
Victor checked the timer mounted inside the vault.
00:03:51.
“Find the central server.”
Adrian pointed toward the rear.
“There.”
They ran.
Behind the shelves was a bank of old computer equipment.
Most of it was already overheating.
A warning flashed.
THERMAL DESTRUCTION SEQUENCE ACTIVE.
Victor looked at Adrian.
“How do we stop it?”
Adrian shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn opened a drawer.
Inside were instruction cards.
She flipped through them.
“Here.”
Victor read.
MASTER RESTORATION REQUIRES BENEFICIARY BIOMETRIC.
Victor swore.
“We need Ethan.”
Evelyn looked horrified.
“No.”
Adrian grabbed the card.
“There may be another way.”
He kept reading.
Then stopped.
Victor saw his expression.
“What?”
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“The beneficiary can authorize a remote transfer.”
Victor leaned closer.
“How?”
Adrian pointed.
“Blood sample or fingerprint on a linked terminal.”
Victor stared at the monitor.
There was a small fingerprint reader.
“Can it link upstairs?”
“If the chapel network still works.”
Victor reached for the intercom.
Static.
Then Serena’s voice.
“Victor?”
He grabbed the microphone.
“Can you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“Put Ethan’s thumb on the chapel control screen.”
Silence.
Serena answered.
“Why?”
“Do it.”
Richard shouted in the background.
“Don’t!”
Victor looked at Evelyn.
Good.
That meant it mattered.
Serena’s voice returned.
“The screen changed.”
Victor looked at the server.
A new line appeared.
BENEFICIARY DETECTED.
Then:
SELECT ACTION.
Three options appeared.
RESTORE ASSETS.
RELEASE EVIDENCE.
DESTROY ARCHIVE.
Victor stared.
Adrian whispered.
“My God.”
Evelyn looked at Victor.
“What does release evidence mean?”
Adrian understood.
“It sends copies.”
“To who?”
He looked at the old system.
“Every designated authority.”
Victor saw a list appear.
Federal prosecutors.
State investigators.
International banking regulators.
Media trustees.
Private legal custodians.
Victor stared.
Richard had spent decades trying to destroy this archive because he could not control what happened once it opened.
Victor reached toward RELEASE EVIDENCE.
Adrian caught his wrist.
“Wait.”
Victor turned.
“What?”
Adrian looked at the list.
“If we do that, everything goes public.”
“That’s the point.”
“No.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“The archive doesn’t only contain evidence against Richard.”
Victor frowned.
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
“It contains everything the Mercer family collected.”
Victor understood.
Blackmail.
Secrets.
Illegal surveillance.
Potentially innocent people.
Adrian continued.
“Some of this could destroy families who had nothing to do with what happened.”
Evelyn looked torn.
Victor stared at the three options.
Restore assets.
Release evidence.
Destroy archive.
Three minutes.
He asked the only question that mattered.
“Can we separate Richard’s crimes?”
Adrian searched the menu.
“Maybe.”
“Do it.”
They opened index files.
Names appeared.
Richard Hale.
Marcus Dane.
Natalie Mercer.
Evelyn Mercer.
Adrian Mercer.
Victor Hale.
Victor stopped.
His own name.
Evelyn saw it.
Victor clicked.
A file opened.
PROJECT ORPHEUS.
Victor stared.
“What is that?”
Evelyn went pale.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You know this.”
Evelyn stepped back.
Victor turned.
“What is Project Orpheus?”
She looked at him.
“We don’t have time.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“I’m tired of hearing that.”
He opened the file.
A video thumbnail appeared.
Date.
Nine years ago.
Before Ethan’s birth.
Victor clicked.
The screen flickered.
Richard Hale appeared in a laboratory.
Beside him stood a younger Marcus Dane.
And Evelyn.
Victor froze.
The video had no sound at first.
Then audio crackled.
Richard’s voice filled the vault.
“The Hale line cannot end with Victor.”
Victor stared at the screen.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Richard continued.
“His fertility tests remain inconclusive.”
Victor turned toward Evelyn.
She whispered.
“I didn’t know he recorded this.”
The video continued.
A doctor entered frame.
“Mrs. Hale’s ova are viable.”
Victor stopped breathing.
The doctor continued.
“But she cannot safely carry a pregnancy.”
Richard nodded.
“And the selected male sample?”
The doctor hesitated.
Victor’s stomach twisted.
Adrian stepped closer.
The doctor answered.
“Confirmed.”
Richard smiled.
Victor stared at Evelyn.
“Selected male sample?”
She began to cry.
Victor’s voice dropped.
“Whose?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Victor stared.
“What?”
“I thought it was yours.”
The video continued.
Richard spoke.
“Victor never needs to know.”
Victor felt cold.
Then Marcus asked the question.
“And if the child’s DNA is ever tested?”
Richard smiled.
“It won’t be.”
Victor’s face hardened.
He looked toward the screen.
“What did you do?”
The video jumped.
A second clip appeared.
Richard stood alone with the doctor.
This time the audio was clear.
“Use Adrian Mercer’s sample.”
Adrian went completely still.
Evelyn gasped.
Victor stared.
No one spoke.
Richard’s voice continued.
“That gives us a direct Mercer heir we can control through Victor.”
Adrian backed away from the screen.
“No.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Victor felt as if the floor had disappeared.
The system upstairs had shown paternal match unavailable because Adrian was not present in its database.
Richard had manipulated everything.
Victor’s voice was hollow.
“So Ethan…”
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
Adrian’s face had gone white.
“Biologically…”
Victor finished.
“He’s yours.”
Adrian said nothing.
Evelyn broke into tears.
Victor stared at the screen.
He had known for less than an hour that Ethan was still biologically his.
And now even that had been taken away.
Then the timer beeped.
00:02:04.
Adrian forced himself to move.
“Victor.”
Victor did not respond.
“Victor!”
He looked up.
“The evidence.”
Victor stared at RELEASE EVIDENCE.
His hand trembled.
Adrian said quietly.
“You raised him.”
Victor looked at him.
Adrian’s voice was firm.
“You are his father.”
Victor swallowed.
Adrian nodded toward the console.
“Do what his father would do.”
That brought Victor back.
He selected Richard Hale’s files.
Marcus Dane.
Project Orpheus.
Natalie Mercer.
The Mercer murders.
Evelyn’s imprisonment.
Serena’s involvement.
He excluded unrelated private files.
Then he clicked RELEASE SELECTED EVIDENCE.
A confirmation box appeared.
BENEFICIARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Victor grabbed the intercom.
“Serena.”
No answer.
“Serena!”
Static.
Then Lily’s voice.
“Victor?”
He froze.
“Lily.”
“Serena left the console.”
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Put Ethan’s hand on the screen.”
“Okay.”
A second passed.
The system flashed.
AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED.
TRANSFER INITIATED.
Victor exhaled.
Then the progress bar appeared.
1%.
4%.
7%.
Timer.
01:31.
Victor stared.
Too slow.
Adrian hit the side of the server.
“Come on.”
12%.
16%.
Smoke thickened.
Evelyn coughed.
Victor pulled his coat over her mouth.
“Stay low.”
25%.
Timer.
01:02.
Victor looked toward the stairs.
“Lily.”
Static.
“Lily, get Ethan out of the chapel.”
No answer.
Victor frowned.
“Lily?”
Then Ethan’s voice came through.
“Dad?”
“I’m here.”
“Serena took the gun.”
Victor’s blood turned cold.
“What?”
“She said someone was coming.”
Victor looked at Adrian.
“Who?”
Ethan whispered.
“I don’t know.”
Then a loud bang sounded over the intercom.
Lily screamed.
Victor shouted.
“ETHAN!”
The line went dead.
Transfer.
51%.
Timer.
00:42.
Victor turned toward the stairs.
Adrian grabbed him.
“You can’t go yet.”
“My son is up there.”
“If we leave now, Richard wins.”
Victor shoved him away.
“I don’t care about Richard.”
Adrian shouted.
“You will when he does this to Ethan again!”
Victor stopped.
Transfer.
68%.
Timer.
00:28.
Evelyn grabbed Victor’s hand.
“Please.”
Victor stared at the numbers.
76%.
84%.
Smoke filled the vault.
Sparks fell from the ceiling.
92%.
Timer.
00:09.
Victor shouted.
“Come on!”
95%.
00:06.
97%.
00:04.
99%.
00:02.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Adrian slammed the emergency shutdown.
The server died.
The timer hit zero.
Nothing happened.
For half a second.
Then fire exploded from the rear cabinets.
“MOVE!”
Victor grabbed Evelyn.
Adrian ran behind them.
Flames raced across the ceiling.
They reached the stairs.
Victor looked up.
A shadow stood at the top.
Someone aimed a gun downward.
Victor stopped.
Evelyn gasped.
The figure stepped into the light.
Marcus Dane.
His wrists were free.
Blood covered his shirt.
He smiled.
May you like
“You should’ve stayed in the basement.”
Then he fired.
