Chapter 13 - HE CAME FOR HIS DAUGHTER

The hospital corridor glowed red beneath the emergency lights.
Victor stood in front of Ethan.
Evelyn stood beside him.
Daniel Cross reached beneath his jacket.
His hand closed around his weapon.
Two federal agents moved toward Lily’s recovery room.
Adrian’s voice came through the intercom again.
“Victor.”
Victor stared at the ceiling speaker.
“I know you can hear me.”
Victor said nothing.
Adrian continued.
“I’m not here for Ethan.”
Victor looked toward Lily’s door.
“I know.”
Silence.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Then you know why I’m here.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“She’s not going anywhere with you.”
Evelyn stepped closer to the speaker.
“Adrian.”
Nothing.
“Adrian, please.”
His voice softened.
“Evie.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“You’re hurt.”
“I’ll survive.”
“Then come out.”
“No.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because I know what happens if I surrender.”
Daniel stepped toward the intercom.
“You receive medical treatment and legal counsel.”
Adrian laughed.
“Daniel Cross.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You know me?”
“I know your file.”
Daniel looked at Victor.
That was not comforting.
Adrian continued.
“I know the prosecutors.”
“I know the judges.”
“I know the people whose names were released from the archive.”
“You cannot protect Lily.”
Victor stepped toward the speaker.
“I can.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“No, Victor.”
“You can love her.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
Victor stared.
“Funny.”
“That sounds exactly like something Margaret would say.”
Silence.
The words hit.
Victor knew they did.
Adrian’s voice returned.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Another pause.
Adrian finally spoke.
“If Ethan rejects succession, Lily becomes the secondary beneficiary.”
“I know.”
“She becomes the legal holder of the Mercer network.”
“I know.”
“Then you know every surviving Consortium member will hunt her.”
Victor looked toward Lily’s room.
“Yes.”
Adrian’s voice cracked slightly.
“I won’t let that happen.”
Victor frowned.
“So your solution is what?”
No answer.
“Force Ethan to accept it?”
Silence.
Victor understood.
“That’s why you came to the chapel.”
Adrian did not deny it.
“You weren’t there only for Evelyn.”
“No.”
“You wanted Ethan to inherit.”
“Yes.”
Victor felt Evelyn stiffen beside him.
She looked devastated.
“Adrian…”
His voice came through the speaker.
“I thought it was the only way.”
Victor stared.
“And Lily?”
Silence.
Victor’s anger rose.
“You knew she was your daughter.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked up.
Victor wished he could cover the boy’s ears.
Too late.
Adrian continued.
“I found Caroline three years ago.”
Lily’s room remained silent.
Victor looked toward it.
He hoped she was asleep.
Adrian’s voice softened.
“She was dying.”
“She told me everything.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“She told you about Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you find her?”
“I did.”
Victor frowned.
Adrian continued.
“I watched her.”
“For months.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You watched your daughter from a distance?”
“I didn’t know how to walk into her life.”
Victor almost laughed.
“You could have started with hello.”
Adrian’s voice sharpened.
“You think I don’t know that?”
The hallway fell silent.
Then Adrian spoke again.
“I had spent my entire life hiding.”
“I had no home.”
“No legal identity that lasted longer than a few years.”
“No family.”
“No idea whether Richard would find me again.”
“And Lily had a life.”
Victor looked toward her door.
Adrian continued.
“She laughed.”
“She had friends.”
“She worked.”
“She complained about rent.”
“She bought terrible coffee every morning from the same corner shop.”
For the first time, Adrian sounded less like a Mercer.
More like a father.
“I thought staying away was protecting her.”
Victor’s anger softened.
Only slightly.
“Then why are you here now?”
Adrian’s answer came immediately.
“Because the archive exposed her.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Adrian continued.
“The Consortium knows the guardian exists.”
“They know Caroline named Lily.”
“They know Ethan can transfer authority to her.”
Daniel looked at the tablet.
“How?”
“They have people inside your task force.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Victor stared at him.
Adrian continued.
“That is why I couldn’t surrender.”
“Someone inside federal custody is compromised.”
Daniel looked toward the agents.
Neither moved.
Victor suddenly distrusted everyone.
Daniel spoke.
“Give me a name.”
Adrian laughed.
“I don’t have one.”
“Then give me evidence.”
“I have that.”
Victor looked toward the speaker.
“Where?”
“With me.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then come out.”
Adrian did not answer.
Victor understood something.
“You don’t trust him.”
Adrian’s voice returned.
“I don’t trust anyone.”
Ethan spoke.
“That’s sad.”
Everyone looked at him.
Victor crouched.
Ethan stared at the speaker.
Adrian said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“If you don’t trust anybody, how do you know who your family is?”
Victor looked at his son.
Adrian was silent for several seconds.
Then he whispered.
“You sound like Caroline.”
A weak voice came from Lily’s doorway.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Lily stood there.
Barefoot.
Hospital gown beneath a robe.
One hand pressed against her bandaged side.
A nurse stood behind her looking horrified.
Victor immediately moved.
“What are you doing?”
Lily raised a hand.
“Don’t.”
“You just had surgery.”
“I noticed.”
“Get back in bed.”
“Victor.”
“Lily.”
She gave him a look.
Even half-conscious, she could apparently silence a billionaire with one expression.
Victor stopped.
Lily looked toward the speaker.
“You said I sound like my mother?”
Adrian did not answer.
Lily stepped farther into the hallway.
“Adrian.”
His voice came softly.
“Lily.”
Her face changed.
That was the first time her biological father had ever said her name to her.
She swallowed.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“For eight months?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid.”
Lily laughed bitterly.
“Of me?”
“Of what knowing me would do to you.”
Lily stared at the speaker.
“You don’t get to decide what truth I can survive.”
Victor looked toward Evelyn.
Those words belonged to everyone tonight.
Adrian whispered.
“I know.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“I don’t think you do.”
She took another step.
“You knew Ethan was your son.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was your daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You knew people wanted to use both of us.”
“Yes.”
“And instead of coming to us, you made another plan.”
Adrian did not answer.
Lily’s eyes filled.
“That’s what Margaret does.”
Silence.
“That’s what Richard does.”
Silence.
“And now you’re doing it.”
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“I’m trying to protect you.”
Lily looked toward Ethan.
“Protection without choice is just another cage.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
Victor remembered the basement.
The restraints.
Seven stolen years.
Lily looked toward the speaker.
“If you’re my father…”
She stopped.
The word hurt.
She forced herself to continue.
“…then come talk to me.”
Adrian did not respond.
“No guns.”
“No secrets.”
“No Mercer network.”
“Just talk.”
Silence.
Victor looked toward the end of the corridor.
Nothing.
Then a service door opened.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Victor stepped in front of Lily.
Adrian appeared.
His shirt was soaked with blood.
His face was pale.
A pistol hung loosely from his hand.
Daniel shouted.
“Drop it!”
Adrian looked at Lily.
She stared back.
Father and daughter.
For the first time.
Adrian slowly placed the gun on the floor.
Then kicked it away.
Daniel’s agents moved.
Victor raised his hand.
“Wait.”
Daniel looked at him.
Victor did not take his eyes off Adrian.
Adrian walked forward.
Lily’s breathing changed.
Victor whispered.
“You don’t have to do this.”
She nodded.
“I do.”
Adrian stopped six feet from her.
He looked at her face.
Then he smiled sadly.
“You look like Caroline.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“So everyone keeps telling me.”
Adrian laughed softly.
Then winced from his wound.
Lily looked at the blood.
“You need a doctor.”
“So do you.”
“I already have one.”
Adrian nodded.
For several seconds, neither knew what to say.
Then Lily asked the simplest question.
“Did you love my mother?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Lily’s face changed.
“Did she love you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why weren’t you together?”
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
Then Victor.
Then Ethan.
“Because we were both too busy surviving people who called control love.”
Lily swallowed.
Adrian reached into his coat.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Adrian stopped.
“Evidence.”
Daniel nodded cautiously.
Adrian removed a small drive.
He placed it on the floor.
Then stepped away.
Daniel picked it up.
“What’s on this?”
“Names.”
“Of Consortium members?”
“And the person inside your task force.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
Adrian looked at one of the agents behind Daniel.
The agent froze.
Victor saw it.
So did Daniel.
The agent reached for his weapon.
Daniel moved first.
“DON’T!”
The agent drew.
Victor grabbed Ethan.
Adrian threw himself toward Lily.
A gunshot exploded.
The compromised agent fell.
Daniel’s second agent had fired.
Silence.
Adrian lay on the floor.
Lily screamed.
“ADRIAN!”
She dropped beside him.
Victor rushed over.
Adrian groaned.
The bullet had grazed his shoulder.
Lily stared.
“You got shot again.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“It’s becoming a habit.”
Lily laughed despite herself.
Then winced from her own wound.
Victor looked toward Daniel.
Daniel stared at the dead agent.
Adrian had been telling the truth.
The Consortium had penetrated the investigation.
Daniel picked up the drive.
His expression hardened.
“This changes everything.”
Adrian looked at Lily.
“No.”
He struggled to sit.
“This changes one thing.”
Lily stared.
“What?”
Adrian looked at Ethan.
Then back at her.
“You both get to choose.”
He reached beneath his shirt.
Another object hung around his neck.
A small metal token.
Not the sun.
Not the moon.
A broken circle.
Evelyn stared.
“What is that?”
Adrian removed it.
“Caroline’s key.”
Margaret had never mentioned a third key.
Victor looked at him.
“What does it do?”
Adrian held it toward Lily.
“It destroys succession.”
Silence.
Richard and Margaret had fought for decades over who would control the Mercer network.
But Caroline had created something else.
A way for nobody to control it.
Lily stared at the key.
“If I use it?”
Adrian nodded.
“The network dies.”
“The trusts become ordinary legal assets.”
“The blackmail systems disappear.”
“The private access disappears.”
“The succession rules disappear.”
“And Ethan?”
“Gets to be Ethan.”
Lily looked at Victor.
Victor said nothing.
This was not his decision.
She looked at Ethan.
The boy smiled.
“Do it.”
Lily looked back at Adrian.
“What happens to me?”
Adrian’s eyes filled.
May you like
“You get to be Lily.”
She took the key.
