Chapter 10 - WHEN THE DOOR CAME DOWN

The outer door exploded inward.
The blast threw splintered wood and twisted metal across the library.
Victor hit the floor.
“ETHAN!”
He reached blindly through the smoke.
His hand found Ethan’s shirt.
Victor dragged him behind the heavy dining table.
Lily dropped beside them.
Evelyn pulled Natalie’s medical stretcher behind a stone column.
Serena covered her mother with her own body.
Adrian raised his weapon.
Richard did the same.
Margaret did not move.
She stood at the head of the table as smoke rolled through the room.
Almost as if she had been expecting this moment for years.
Victor looked at her.
“GET DOWN!”
Margaret calmly pressed her palm against a hidden panel beneath the table.
Steel shields slammed over the bookcases.
A second layer of armor dropped across the inner walls.
Victor stared.
Margaret looked at him.
“I told you.”
“The network is more than information.”
A dark figure stepped through the smoke.
Then another.
Then three more.
Black tactical uniforms.
No insignias.
No visible names.
Their weapons were raised.
Adrian fired first.
One attacker dropped behind the doorway.
The others returned fire.
Bullets struck the armored table.
Ethan covered his ears.
Victor pulled the boy against his chest.
“Stay down.”
Lily crawled closer.
“I’ve got him.”
Victor looked at her.
“You stay down too.”
Lily almost laughed.
“Have you met me tonight?”
Victor stared at her.
Even now.
Even here.
She refused to run from Ethan.
Victor handed her the fallen guard’s pistol.
Lily looked at it.
“I don’t know how to use this.”
“Then don’t unless someone gets close.”
She nodded.
Victor moved toward Adrian.
Richard was behind the opposite column.
Victor looked across the room.
“Richard!”
His father glanced over.
“How many?”
Richard listened to the gunfire.
“More than seventeen.”
Margaret answered.
“Twenty-three.”
Richard stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I know who they sent.”
Victor looked at Margaret.
“Then tell us who they are.”
She remained behind the table.
“The Consortium is not one organization.”
“It is an agreement.”
“Between who?”
“People whose secrets are worth more than most countries.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“Names.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Some of those names are already in the archive you released.”
“Then they know exposure is coming.”
“Yes.”
Adrian reloaded.
“Which means they aren’t here for the archive.”
Margaret looked toward Ethan.
“They’re here for him.”
Victor froze.
Ethan heard it.
His face went pale.
Victor turned toward Margaret.
“Why?”
“Because the archive can be copied.”
“The beneficiary cannot.”
Victor understood.
Kill Ethan.
Break the Mercer succession.
The network becomes inaccessible.
Victor looked at his son.
“No one touches him.”
Margaret smiled faintly.
“For once, we agree.”
Another attacker entered.
Richard fired twice.
The man fell backward.
Victor stared at his father.
Richard noticed.
“What?”
Victor said nothing.
Richard almost smiled.
“I taught you to shoot.”
Victor looked at him.
“You taught me a lot of things I wish I could forget.”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Gunfire erupted again.
Margaret pressed another switch.
Part of the floor opened.
A narrow staircase appeared.
Victor looked at it.
“Another tunnel?”
Margaret nodded.
“Command center.”
Richard shouted.
“No!”
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at Margaret.
“That’s where she wants Ethan.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
Richard looked at Victor.
“The network’s master terminal is down there.”
Victor stared.
Margaret said calmly.
“It is also the only defensible room left.”
Richard laughed.
“And once Ethan enters, she can initiate succession.”
Ethan looked at Victor.
“What’s succession?”
Nobody answered.
Ethan frowned.
“Stop doing that.”
Victor looked at him.
“Doing what?”
“Not answering because I’m a kid.”
Victor swallowed.
He nodded.
Fair.
He crouched beside Ethan.
“Succession means the system officially recognizes you as the person in control.”
Ethan looked toward Margaret.
“And she wants that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Margaret answered.
“Because then you can protect everyone.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You keep saying protect when you mean control.”
Silence.
Richard actually laughed.
Margaret glared at him.
Victor almost smiled.
Another explosion shook the room.
Adrian looked toward the breached doorway.
“They’re cutting through the second barrier.”
Victor made the decision.
“Command center.”
Richard stared.
“Victor.”
“We need a defensible position.”
Margaret nodded.
Victor looked at her.
“But you stay where I can see you.”
Margaret smiled.
“You still believe you’re in charge.”
Victor raised the gun.
“Tonight I’ve been buried alive, lied to by two dead people, shot at, locked underground, and told three different versions of who my son is.”
His eyes hardened.
“I’m done caring who thinks they’re in charge.”
Margaret said nothing.
Victor turned.
“Move.”
Adrian covered the door.
Richard covered the opposite side.
Evelyn and Serena carried Natalie.
Lily kept Ethan beside her.
Margaret entered the staircase first.
Victor followed.
The command center was thirty feet underground.
The room was circular.
Screens covered every wall.
Banking networks.
Security cameras.
Encrypted communications.
Property registries.
Government databases.
Victor stopped.
Richard had not exaggerated.
This was not an archive.
It was an empire without a flag.
Ethan stared.
“All of this belongs to me?”
Margaret walked toward the central terminal.
“Not yet.”
Victor stepped between them.
“And maybe never.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Without Ethan, these systems become dormant.”
“Good.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Victor pointed at the screens.
“This machine is why everyone upstairs is trying to kill a nine-year-old.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“This machine is why your son is still alive.”
“No.”
Victor looked at Lily.
“People are why he’s alive.”
Margaret followed his gaze.
Lily was kneeling beside Ethan, checking a scrape on his hand.
Margaret watched her.
Then something strange happened.
Her expression softened.
Only for a second.
Victor noticed.
So did Evelyn.
Evelyn stepped closer to her mother.
“Why Lily?”
Margaret did not answer.
“You said Caroline was your sister.”
“Yes.”
“Then Lily is our cousin.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Why did you choose her to protect Ethan?”
Margaret looked away.
“Because she was available.”
Lily stood.
“That’s a lie.”
Margaret looked at her.
Lily stepped closer.
“You knew everything about me.”
“My jobs.”
“My agency.”
“My mother.”
“You put me in Victor’s house.”
“So why?”
Margaret said nothing.
Lily’s voice hardened.
“Why me?”
Richard laughed quietly.
Margaret turned toward him.
“Don’t.”
Richard smiled.
Victor looked between them.
“You know.”
Richard nodded.
Margaret’s face changed.
Richard enjoyed it.
Of course he did.
He looked at Lily.
“Caroline Bennett didn’t die when you were six.”
Lily stopped breathing.
Victor felt the room change.
Lily whispered.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
Margaret’s voice became sharp.
“Richard.”
He ignored her.
“Your mother survived.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Richard continued.
“She disappeared.”
“Just like Evelyn.”
“Just like Margaret.”
“Just like me.”
Lily stared at Margaret.
“Is that true?”
Margaret did not answer.
Lily stepped toward her.
“Is my mother alive?”
Margaret’s silence was enough.
Lily’s face collapsed.
“Where is she?”
Margaret looked toward the floor.
“Lily—”
“WHERE IS SHE?”
Ethan flinched.
Lily immediately lowered her voice.
But tears were already running down her face.
“Please.”
Margaret looked at her.
“She died three years ago.”
Lily stared.
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“She was ill.”
“You said she died when I was six.”
“I said the woman you knew as Claire Bennett died.”
Lily looked sick.
Margaret continued.
“Caroline Mercer survived.”
Lily backed away.
“You let me think she was dead.”
Margaret’s voice softened.
“She asked me to.”
Lily laughed through tears.
“That’s convenient.”
“It’s true.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked toward Ethan.
“Because she was protecting you.”
Lily followed her gaze.
Then she understood something.
“No.”
Margaret said nothing.
Lily looked at Ethan.
Then back at Margaret.
“No.”
Victor felt it too.
A new secret.
One Margaret had not wanted exposed.
Lily whispered.
“What did my mother have to do with Ethan?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Richard answered.
“She carried him.”
Silence.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Adrian stared.
Victor felt as if someone had punched him.
Lily’s face went blank.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
“Caroline Mercer was the surrogate.”
Evelyn whispered.
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“You never knew her name.”
“You were told the surrogate was anonymous.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Victor remembered the clinic.
The pregnancy.
The paperwork.
Everything controlled by Richard.
Lily stared at Ethan.
The boy stared back.
Confused.
Margaret finally spoke.
“Caroline volunteered.”
Lily turned on her.
“Why?”
“Because the child needed to be carried by a genetically compatible Mercer relative.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That wasn’t medically necessary.”
Margaret looked at him.
“No.”
“It was necessary for the trust.”
Adrian understood.
“The gestational signature.”
Margaret nodded.
“The old trust protocols included maternal lineage verification.”
Victor stared at her.
“You used Lily’s mother as another key.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“She volunteered.”
Lily stepped closer.
“Did she know what you were doing?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know whose baby she was carrying?”
Margaret hesitated.
Lily saw it.
“Oh my God.”
Margaret spoke quickly.
“She knew it was Evelyn’s child.”
“But not Adrian’s.”
Silence.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Lily looked toward Ethan.
Her voice broke.
“So my mother carried him.”
“Yes.”
“And then you put me in his house.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked at Lily.
“Because Caroline made me promise.”
Lily stopped.
Margaret continued.
“She knew what the Hale family could do.”
“She knew what I could do.”
“She didn’t trust any of us.”
Lily stared.
“So she chose me?”
Margaret nodded.
“She said if anything happened to Evelyn, Ethan needed someone who would protect him without wanting anything from him.”
Lily began crying silently.
Margaret’s voice softened.
“She chose you.”
Ethan walked toward Lily.
He wrapped his arms around her.
Lily froze.
Then held him.
Victor looked away.
Even Richard seemed uncomfortable.
The moment lasted three seconds.
Then alarms exploded through the command center.
BREACH DETECTED.
LEVEL ONE COMPROMISED.
Margaret turned toward the screens.
“They’re inside.”
Victor checked the camera.
The Consortium team had reached the library.
One of them held a device against the command-center door.
Richard stared.
“Thermal charge.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“How long?”
Richard answered.
“Two minutes.”
Margaret walked toward the central terminal.
“Ethan.”
Victor stepped in front of her.
“No.”
“We don’t have time.”
“For what?”
“Succession.”
Victor raised the gun.
“Stop using that word.”
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“If he activates the network, I can lock down the lower level.”
Victor stared.
“Can you do it without him?”
“No.”
Richard laughed.
“Yes, she can.”
Margaret turned.
Richard smiled.
Victor looked at him.
“Explain.”
Richard pointed toward the terminal.
“The Mercer network recognizes three emergency authorities.”
“Beneficiary.”
“Custodian.”
“And founder.”
Victor looked at Margaret.
“You’re the founder.”
Margaret said nothing.
Richard smiled.
“She can activate the defenses herself.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“You were going to make Ethan do it.”
Margaret looked at her.
“He needs to learn.”
Victor stepped closer.
“He needs to survive childhood.”
The door shook.
One minute.
Victor pointed toward the terminal.
“Activate it.”
Margaret stared.
“No.”
Victor froze.
“What?”
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“He has to choose.”
Victor finally understood.
This was never about necessity.
It was about obedience.
Margaret wanted Ethan to voluntarily accept power.
To become what she had spent nine years building him to become.
Victor looked at her.
“You’d let them come through that door?”
Margaret said nothing.
Victor’s face changed.
“You would.”
Evelyn stared at her mother.
“Mom.”
Margaret remained calm.
“The network cannot belong to someone afraid to use it.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I’m not afraid.”
Margaret smiled.
“Then activate it.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I just don’t want to be like you.”
Margaret’s smile disappeared.
The door buckled.
Thirty seconds.
Richard stepped toward the founder console.
Margaret blocked him.
“No.”
Richard laughed.
“You would rather die than admit the child rejected you.”
Margaret raised a weapon.
Victor raised his.
Adrian raised his.
Serena stood beside Natalie.
Lily pulled Ethan behind her.
Richard stared at Margaret.
Twenty seconds.
Victor shouted.
“Enough!”
Nobody moved.
Victor looked at Ethan.
Then at the founder console.
Then at Margaret.
He made his decision.
He grabbed Richard.
“What are you doing?”
Victor shoved Richard’s hand toward the biometric scanner.
Margaret screamed.
“NO!”
Richard’s palm hit the reader.
ACCESS DENIED.
Victor stared.
Richard laughed.
“I’m not the founder.”
Victor looked at Margaret.
She smiled.
Five seconds.
The thermal charge flashed.
May you like
Victor threw himself over Ethan.
The command-center door exploded.
