Chapter 11 - LILY’S MOTHER LEFTONE LAST MESSAGE

The blast tore the command-center door from its hinges.

Victor felt heat across his back.

Metal struck the floor.

Smoke swallowed the room.

Then the shooting started.

Adrian fired toward the doorway.

Richard joined him.

Serena dragged Natalie behind the central console.

Evelyn dropped beside them.

Lily pulled Ethan beneath the desk.

Victor rolled behind a steel cabinet.

A Consortium operative entered.

Victor fired.

The man dropped.

Another appeared behind him.

Adrian fired twice.

The attacker retreated.

Richard shouted.

“They’re using the corridor as cover!”

Victor looked toward Margaret.

She was still standing beside the founder terminal.

“ACTIVATE THE DEFENSES!”

She stared at Ethan.

Victor could not believe it.

Even now.

Even with bullets hitting the walls.

She was waiting.

Victor fired again.

“Margaret!”

She did not move.

Lily saw something.

A small access panel beneath the terminal.

She crawled toward it.

Ethan grabbed her.

“Don’t.”

“I’ll be okay.”

Lily moved across the floor.

A bullet hit the terminal above her head.

Victor shouted.

“LILY!”

She reached the panel.

She ripped it open.

Inside were several storage drives.

One had a handwritten label.

CAROLINE.

Lily froze.

Margaret saw.

Her face changed.

“Leave that alone.”

Lily stared at her.

“My mother?”

Margaret moved toward her.

Victor raised the gun.

“Stay where you are.”

Margaret stopped.

Lily removed the drive.

A small screen activated automatically.

VIDEO MESSAGE AVAILABLE.

Lily’s hand trembled.

Another burst of gunfire filled the room.

Richard shouted.

“Not exactly the time for home movies!”

Lily ignored him.

She pressed PLAY.

A woman appeared on the tiny screen.

Early forties.

Soft brown hair.

Tired eyes.

Lily stopped breathing.

“Mom.”

The recording began.

“If you’re watching this, Lily, then Margaret broke her promise.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Lily stared.

Caroline continued.

“And if Margaret broke her promise, Ethan is in danger.”

Victor heard his son’s name.

He moved closer while still covering the doorway.

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something.”

“You were never placed near Ethan because of blood.”

Margaret looked toward the floor.

Lily frowned.

Caroline continued.

“Margaret will tell you that family blood matters.”

“She believes it.”

“Richard Hale believes it too.”

“They are both wrong.”

Ethan crawled beside Lily.

Victor almost told him to stay back.

Then stopped.

Caroline’s recorded voice filled the command center.

“I chose you because I watched you grow into someone neither family understood.”

“You were kind when kindness gave you nothing.”

“You protected people when nobody was watching.”

“And you never measured a person by what they could give you.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Caroline smiled from the recording.

“That is why I chose you.”

Ethan leaned against Lily.

Caroline continued.

“But there is something Margaret never told anyone.”

Margaret’s eyes opened.

Richard looked toward the screen.

Caroline’s expression became serious.

“The Mercer network has a guardian protocol.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Caroline continued.

“The beneficiary does not have to inherit the network.”

“He can transfer temporary authority to a guardian.”

Margaret moved.

Victor pointed the gun.

“Don’t.”

Caroline continued.

“The guardian cannot inherit the money.”

“Cannot control the trusts.”

“Cannot transfer ownership.”

“They can do only three things.”

“Protect the beneficiary.”

“Release evidence.”

“And terminate the network.”

Everyone looked at Lily.

She stared at the screen.

Caroline’s final words came softly.

“I named you.”

Lily stopped breathing.

Margaret shouted.

“She had no authority!”

Richard started laughing.

Margaret turned.

Richard pointed toward Lily.

“That’s why you put her in the house.”

“You weren’t honoring Caroline.”

“You were watching Lily.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

Caroline continued.

“The authorization phrase is not a code.”

“It is a promise.”

Lily leaned closer.

Caroline smiled.

“Say the words I taught you when you were little.”

Lily whispered.

“What words?”

The recording ended.

Lily stared.

“No.”

“Mom.”

The screen went black.

Ethan looked at her.

“What did she teach you?”

Lily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Another attacker entered.

Victor fired.

Richard shouted.

“We’re running out of ammunition!”

Adrian checked.

“Three rounds!”

Victor had two.

Serena had none.

Margaret looked at Lily.

“Give me the drive.”

Lily stood.

“No.”

“You don’t understand that protocol.”

“Then explain it.”

Margaret’s voice hardened.

“Caroline was emotional.”

Lily laughed through tears.

“That seems to be what everyone in this family calls women who disagree with them.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

Margaret did not.

The Consortium stopped firing.

Victor frowned.

Silence was worse.

Richard looked toward the corridor.

“They’re changing tactics.”

A metallic object rolled through the doorway.

Adrian saw it.

“Down!”

Everyone dropped.

A flash exploded.

White light.

Victor lost his vision.

His ears rang.

He heard Ethan scream.

Victor reached blindly.

“ETHAN!”

No answer.

“ETHAN!”

His vision slowly returned.

Shapes.

Smoke.

Movement.

A man had entered.

He grabbed Ethan.

Lily launched herself at him.

She clawed at his arm.

The operative struck her.

Lily fell.

Victor fired.

The bullet hit the man’s vest.

He staggered.

Ethan bit his hand.

The man shouted.

Ethan broke free.

He ran toward Victor.

Another operative appeared.

Gun raised.

Aimed directly at Ethan.

Victor had no angle.

“No!”

Lily moved.

She threw herself between them.

The gun fired.

Lily jerked.

Then fell.

Ethan screamed.

“LILY!”

Victor fired his final round.

The operative dropped.

Victor crawled toward Lily.

Blood spread across her side.

Ethan knelt beside her.

“No.”

Lily struggled to breathe.

Victor pressed his hand against the wound.

“Stay with me.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

The boy was sobbing.

She reached toward him.

“Hey.”

Ethan grabbed her hand.

“Don’t die.”

Lily gave a weak smile.

“I’m trying not to.”

Victor looked at Serena.

“Medical kit.”

Serena ran.

Margaret stared at Lily.

Something broke in her expression.

Victor looked at her.

“Activate the defenses.”

Margaret did not move.

“NOW!”

She looked toward Ethan.

Victor stood.

He crossed the room.

He grabbed Margaret by the shoulders.

“If she dies because you wanted to teach a nine-year-old a lesson—”

Margaret whispered.

“I can’t.”

Victor froze.

“What?”

Richard looked toward her.

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I can’t activate it.”

Richard stared.

“You said—”

“I lied.”

Victor released her.

Margaret looked at Lily.

“Caroline removed my founder authority before she disappeared.”

Silence.

Richard began laughing.

Margaret looked at him.

“Shut up.”

He laughed harder.

“All this time.”

“You had nothing.”

Margaret’s face twisted.

Victor understood.

The fake button.

The tests.

The pressure on Ethan.

Margaret had needed Ethan because she no longer controlled the network.

She had been bluffing.

Victor looked at Lily.

“The guardian.”

Margaret nodded.

“Lily is the only adult who can activate emergency control without Ethan accepting succession.”

Lily was barely conscious.

Victor knelt.

“Lily.”

Her eyes opened.

“You heard her?”

Lily nodded weakly.

“Need phrase.”

Victor looked toward the Caroline recording.

“What did your mother say to you?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“I don’t remember.”

Ethan squeezed her hand.

“Try.”

Lily breathed through the pain.

“My mom used to say lots of things.”

“Think.”

Lily shook her head.

“She used to tuck me in.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“What did she say?”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“She said…”

Her voice faded.

Victor pressed harder against the wound.

“Stay awake.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

Then suddenly she remembered.

“When I was scared…”

“Yes?”

“She would say…”

Lily swallowed.

“Power protects itself.”

Margaret looked up.

Lily continued.

“But love protects someone else.”

The central terminal lit up.

Everyone froze.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION RECOGNIZED.

GUARDIAN: LILY BENNETT.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Richard stopped laughing.

The system spoke.

“Guardian command requested.”

Lily looked toward the doorway.

More footsteps were coming.

Victor leaned toward her.

“Tell it to lock down.”

Lily whispered.

“Protect Ethan.”

The system responded.

“Command accepted.”

Everything changed.

Steel barriers slammed through the corridor.

Automated defense panels activated.

The remaining Consortium operatives shouted.

Doors sealed.

Weapons powered down.

Communications were blocked.

For the first time all night, the gunfire stopped.

Complete silence filled the command center.

Ethan stared at Lily.

“You did it.”

She smiled weakly.

Then her eyes closed.

“Lily?”

Ethan shook her hand.

“Lily.”

Victor checked her pulse.

Still there.

Barely.

“Serena!”

“I’m here.”

Serena opened the medical kit.

Evelyn joined her.

Victor lifted Lily carefully.

“We need a hospital.”

Margaret looked toward the screen.

“The estate is still surrounded.”

Victor stared at her.

“Then clear it.”

“I told you—”

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Lily can.”

Everyone looked at him.

Ethan looked toward the terminal.

“She said protect me.”

“And Lily protects everybody.”

The system beeped.

GUARDIAN COMMAND ACTIVE.

Victor looked at the controls.

A route appeared.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION AVAILABLE.

Victor almost laughed.

Ethan had understood the system better than the adults.

Because Ethan understood Lily.

Victor lifted her.

“Open it.”

The floor beneath the command center unlocked.

A medical evacuation tunnel appeared.

Serena pushed Natalie’s stretcher toward it.

Evelyn followed.

Adrian helped.

Richard moved toward the tunnel.

Victor blocked him.

Richard stared.

“What?”

“You’re staying.”

Richard laughed.

“You cannot be serious.”

Victor looked at the security screen.

Police lights were appearing beyond the estate gates.

Then federal vehicles.

Daniel Cross’s message had worked.

The evidence was out.

Victor looked at Richard.

“You wanted your legacy.”

He nodded toward the approaching authorities.

“There it is.”

Richard’s face hardened.

Margaret stepped toward the tunnel.

Victor blocked her too.

She stared.

“You can’t leave me here.”

Victor looked at Evelyn.

This decision belonged to her.

Evelyn stared at her mother.

Twenty-six years of lies stood between them.

Finally she spoke.

“You made us live with the consequences of your choices.”

“Now you can live with yours.”

Margaret’s face fell.

Evelyn turned away.

Victor carried Lily into the tunnel.

Ethan stayed beside him.

Behind them, Richard and Margaret stood in the command center.

Two architects of the same nightmare.

May you like

Neither had won.

And for the first time, neither controlled what happened next.
