Chapter 4 - THE SON WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The mechanical lock beneath the chapel groaned like something waking from the dead.

Victor looked down.

The stone floor beneath the altar shifted.

A thin black line appeared between the marble slabs.

Then another.

Ethan backed into Lily.

“Dad…”

Victor immediately moved toward him.

Adrian raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

Victor turned.

“Don’t tell me what to do with my son.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“He’s standing on the trigger floor.”

Victor stopped.

Ethan looked down.

A circular section of stone surrounded the chair where Serena had placed him.

Thin symbols had begun glowing beneath the dust.

Victor had never seen them before.

Adrian pointed toward the pendant around Ethan’s neck.

“The system recognized the key.”

Richard Hale suddenly moved.

He lunged toward Ethan.

Victor intercepted him.

Richard slammed into Victor’s shoulder.

The two men crashed against the table.

Lily pulled Ethan away.

Serena saw her chance.

She rushed toward the boy.

Evelyn stepped between them.

Serena froze.

For a second, both women stared at each other.

Seven years of hatred stood between them.

Evelyn’s voice was low.

“You shouldn’t have touched my child.”

Serena laughed.

“Your child?”

Her eyes flicked toward Adrian.

“Interesting choice of words.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Serena smiled.

“You still haven’t told Victor, have you?”

Victor heard every word.

He pushed Richard away.

“Tell me what?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Not now.”

Victor stared.

“You’ve said that for seven years.”

Pain crossed her face.

“That isn’t fair.”

Victor almost laughed.

“Fair?”

“My wife was alive beneath my house.”

“My father faked his death.”

“My head of security helped abduct my son.”

“And a man I’ve never met just told me Ethan belongs to him.”

Victor pointed toward Adrian.

“So don’t talk to me about fair.”

Ethan looked between them.

Confusion filled his face.

Lily noticed.

She crouched beside him.

“Hey.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“Whatever they’re talking about, none of it changes who loves you.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“Is Dad still my dad?”

Victor heard him.

The rage left his face instantly.

He crossed the room.

He knelt in front of Ethan.

“Yes.”

Ethan searched his eyes.

“But that man said—”

“I don’t care what that man said.”

Victor took both of Ethan’s hands.

“I was there when you took your first breath.”

“I held you when you were sick.”

“I taught you how to ride a bike.”

“I watched you break Mrs. Gardner’s window and lie about it for four hours.”

Ethan gave the tiniest, tearful smile.

Victor’s voice softened.

“You are my son.”

“No secret in this room changes that.”

Ethan threw his arms around him.

Victor held him tightly.

Adrian looked away.

Something unreadable passed across his face.

Richard watched with disgust.

“This sentimental nonsense is exactly why you were never fit to protect the Hale legacy.”

Victor stood.

He kept one hand on Ethan’s shoulder.

“I’m beginning to think destroying the Hale legacy might be the first useful thing I ever do with it.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

The floor groaned again.

The circular stone section beneath the altar began descending.

Everyone looked toward it.

A staircase slowly appeared.

Cold white light rose from below.

Adrian exhaled.

“It’s opening.”

Richard’s face tightened.

Serena looked excited.

Victor noticed.

“What’s down there?”

Nobody answered.

Victor looked at Evelyn.

“What’s down there?”

She swallowed.

“The archive.”

Richard snapped.

“Don’t.”

Victor looked at his father.

That was all the confirmation he needed.

Adrian walked toward the staircase.

Richard moved to block him.

Victor raised the gun.

Richard stopped.

Adrian smiled faintly.

“Still afraid of paper, Richard?”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what’s in that archive.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“I know exactly what’s in it.”

“I spent half my life trying to get back inside.”

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Then explain.”

Adrian glanced at Ethan.

“Not here.”

Victor laughed without humor.

“Everything happens here.”

“You can explain here.”

Adrian looked toward the descending staircase.

Then at Richard.

Finally, he nodded.

“The Mercer family built this estate.”

Victor said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“They also built something underneath it.”

“Not a vault for money.”

“A vault for records.”

“Private ledgers.”

“Property transfers.”

“Company ownership.”

“Blackmail files.”

“Evidence.”

Richard interrupted.

“Propaganda.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Evidence.”

Victor turned toward Richard.

“What kind of evidence?”

Adrian answered.

“Murder.”

Silence.

Ethan’s face changed.

Lily immediately stepped in front of him.

Victor’s voice lowered.

“Whose murder?”

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“Our parents.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Victor stared at her.

“You told me they died in a car accident.”

“They did.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“After someone cut the brake line.”

Victor slowly turned toward his father.

Richard did not react.

That was worse than denial.

Victor took a step toward him.

“You killed Evelyn’s parents?”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You ordered it.”

Richard looked toward him.

“You were eight years old.”

“I was old enough to remember the man who dragged me out of the wreck.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“He wore a Hale security badge.”

Richard’s face remained calm.

Victor felt sick.

Evelyn spoke.

“My mother survived long enough to tell someone where the archive key was hidden.”

Victor looked at the pendant.

“The necklace.”

She nodded.

“My grandfather designed two keys.”

“One for the archive.”

“One for the beneficiary.”

Victor frowned.

“Two?”

Adrian reached beneath his shirt.

He pulled out a chain.

Another silver pendant hung from it.

Not a crescent moon.

A small sun.

Victor stared.

Adrian looked at Ethan’s necklace.

“The moon identifies the next Mercer heir.”

“The sun opens the archive.”

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You idiots.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Richard shook his head.

“You actually think this is about opening a room.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What did you do?”

Richard smiled.

“Insurance.”

The lights changed.

The white glow from beneath the chapel turned red.

A mechanical voice sounded.

“Beneficiary verification incomplete.”

Adrian looked at Ethan.

The countdown on the wall continued.

00:09:18.

Then another message appeared.

SECONDARY KEY REQUIRED.

Adrian held up the sun pendant.

Serena moved.

Fast.

She pulled a small pistol from beneath her dress.

Lily saw it first.

“Victor!”

Victor turned.

Serena aimed at Adrian.

Evelyn screamed.

Serena fired.

The shot exploded through the chapel.

Adrian spun sideways.

The bullet hit his upper arm.

He crashed against the altar.

Ethan screamed.

Victor fired back.

Serena ducked behind a column.

Richard moved toward the stairs.

Victor shouted.

“STOP!”

Richard ignored him.

Lily grabbed Ethan and dragged him behind a stone bench.

Evelyn ran to Adrian.

Blood soaked through his sleeve.

He pushed her away.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“Get the key.”

Evelyn looked down.

The sun pendant had fallen.

It was lying near Richard’s feet.

Richard saw it.

So did Victor.

Both men moved.

Richard reached it first.

He snatched the pendant from the floor.

Victor raised his gun.

“Drop it.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

He backed toward the open staircase.

Serena emerged from behind the column.

Her gun was still raised.

Victor shifted his aim toward her.

“Put it down.”

Serena’s expression had changed.

There was no panic anymore.

Only desperation.

“You don’t understand.”

Victor’s voice hardened.

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

She looked at Richard.

“You understand nothing.”

Richard glared at her.

“Serena.”

She ignored him.

“You think I did this for him?”

Victor frowned.

Richard’s face changed.

“Be quiet.”

Serena laughed.

“You really believe I spent three years pretending to love you because Richard Hale told me to?”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

Richard stepped toward her.

“I said shut up.”

Serena pointed the gun at him.

Everyone froze.

Richard stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

Serena smiled.

“What I should’ve done seven years ago.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“You knew Richard before me.”

Serena looked at her.

“Long before you.”

Adrian pressed one hand against his bleeding arm.

“Who are you?”

Serena’s smile disappeared.

“My mother was Natalie Mercer.”

Evelyn went still.

Adrian’s face lost color.

Victor looked between them.

“Who is Natalie Mercer?”

Evelyn whispered.

“My aunt.”

Serena looked at her.

“Your aunt who disappeared when she was twenty-two.”

Evelyn stared.

“My father said she ran away.”

“No.”

Serena’s eyes burned.

“Richard Hale made her disappear.”

Richard’s voice cut in.

“Your mother was unstable.”

Serena turned the gun on him.

“She was pregnant.”

Silence.

Victor looked at Richard.

Serena continued.

“She threatened to expose what the Hales were doing.”

“She threatened to give testimony to the Mercer trustees.”

“So Richard locked her away.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what happened.”

“I know she spent fourteen years in a private clinic under a false name.”

Serena’s voice shook now.

“I know she died believing her entire family had forgotten her.”

Evelyn looked horrified.

“No.”

Serena’s eyes filled.

“She asked for you.”

Evelyn froze.

“She asked for Evelyn every day.”

Evelyn’s knees nearly buckled.

Adrian caught her.

Richard looked toward Serena.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Serena laughed.

“I already made one.”

“I believed you when you said Ethan had to die.”

Victor’s expression changed instantly.

Serena looked at him.

“I believed you when you said the trust would erase what happened to my mother.”

“But then Lily recorded me.”

“And I realized something.”

She looked toward Richard.

“You weren’t protecting me.”

“You were cleaning up another witness.”

Richard said nothing.

Serena’s face twisted.

“You were going to kill me too.”

Richard smiled coldly.

“Eventually.”

Serena stared.

Victor saw something break inside her.

For the first time, she looked less like a villain and more like someone who had just realized she had been standing on the wrong side of a grave.

Then Richard moved.

He pulled a small black device from his pocket.

Adrian shouted.

“Don’t!”

Richard pressed the button.

A steel door slammed shut across the chapel staircase.

The archive entrance disappeared.

The countdown froze.

00:07:52.

Then the mechanical voice spoke again.

“Emergency purge initiated.”

Evelyn screamed.

“No!”

Victor looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian answered.

“The archive is going to burn.”

Victor stared.

“How long?”

Adrian looked at the display.

“Eight minutes.”

Victor turned toward Richard.

“You’re destroying everything.”

Richard smiled.

“That’s the idea.”

Victor lunged.

Richard raised the sun pendant.

“Another step and this disappears with me.”

Victor stopped.

Richard backed toward the side door.

Serena aimed at him.

“Give me the key.”

Richard laughed.

“You don’t even know what to do with it.”

Serena’s finger tightened.

“I know enough.”

Ethan suddenly shouted from behind the bench.

“Dad!”

Victor turned.

Ethan was holding the moon pendant.

It had begun glowing.

A tiny blue light pulsed inside the silver.

Adrian stared.

“That’s not supposed to happen.”

Victor looked at him.

“What?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“The moon key only activates when the archive finds a valid heir.”

Richard’s face went white.

Ethan looked frightened.

The pendant projected a small line of light onto the floor.

Then words appeared.

DNA MATCH CONFIRMED.

Victor stared.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Richard whispered.

“No.”

Another line appeared.

BENEFICIARY: ETHAN MERCER.

Victor slowly looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked stunned.

Then the system displayed one final line.

PATERNAL MATCH: UNAVAILABLE.

MATERNAL MATCH: CONFIRMED.

Victor turned toward Evelyn.

Everything became very still.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Victor whispered.

“Maternal?”

Adrian looked at her too.

Evelyn began to cry.

Richard smiled again.

He knew.

Victor stared at Evelyn.

“You said Ethan was Adrian’s.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I never said that.”

Victor thought back.

Adrian had said it.

Not Evelyn.

Victor turned toward Adrian.

“You lied.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“I thought it was true.”

Victor looked back at Evelyn.

“Then whose child is he?”

Evelyn stared at Ethan.

Her voice broke.

“He’s mine.”

Victor stopped breathing.

Ethan looked at her.

Victor’s face changed.

“You said you couldn’t have children.”

Evelyn whispered.

“I couldn’t carry one.”

Victor understood slowly.

Surrogate.

Richard looked delighted by the confusion.

Evelyn continued.

“Ethan was conceived from my egg.”

Victor took one step back.

“And?”

Evelyn looked directly at him.

“And your genetic material.”

Victor stared.

The entire room seemed to tilt.

“He is your biological son.”

Ethan looked toward Victor.

Victor’s eyes filled instantly.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Serena lowered the gun slightly.

Victor looked at Evelyn.

“Why did Adrian say he was his?”

“Because that’s what Richard told him.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

Evelyn pointed toward Victor’s father.

“He needed Adrian angry at you.”

“He needed all of us divided.”

Victor finally understood.

Richard had built lies inside lies.

Adrian believed Victor had stolen his son.

Victor believed Evelyn had deceived him.

Serena believed Ethan’s existence erased her mother.

Every road led back to Richard.

Victor turned toward his father.

Richard backed away.

For the first time, the old man looked cornered.

Then the floor beneath them shook.

The countdown resumed.

00:07:31.

Adrian looked toward the sealed archive.

“We have seven minutes.”

Victor held out his hand.

“Give me the sun key.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

Victor raised the gun.

Richard smiled.

“You won’t shoot me.”

Victor’s expression did not change.

“You taught me never to assume what a desperate man will do.”

Richard’s smile faded.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Grandpa?”

Everyone looked at him.

Richard’s face softened artificially.

Ethan walked one step forward.

Victor reached for him.

Ethan shook his head.

He looked at Richard.

“You want this?”

He held up the moon pendant.

Richard’s eyes locked onto it.

“Yes.”

Ethan swallowed.

“Then trade.”

Victor stared at his son.

Richard laughed.

“You think this is a game?”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“You give Dad the sun.”

“I give you the moon.”

Richard studied him.

Victor understood what Ethan was doing.

He hated it.

But he stayed silent.

Richard looked toward the countdown.

Six minutes.

He made a decision.

“Walk toward me.”

Ethan stepped forward.

Lily whispered.

“Ethan…”

Victor raised a hand.

Wait.

Ethan walked until he stood ten feet from Richard.

Richard held up the sun key.

“Throw it.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You first.”

Richard smiled.

“You really are Victor’s son.”

Then he threw the sun pendant.

Victor lunged.

He caught it.

At the same moment, Ethan threw the moon pendant toward Richard.

But he did not throw it directly at him.

He threw it high.

Richard looked up.

Serena moved.

She shot Richard in the shoulder.

Richard screamed.

The moon pendant hit the floor.

Lily ran.

She grabbed Ethan.

Victor rushed toward the key.

Richard dove for it.

Adrian kicked it away.

Victor caught the pendant.

Now he held both keys.

Sun and moon.

The entire chapel went silent.

Then the mechanical voice sounded.

“Dual authorization recognized.”

The steel door beneath the altar began opening again.

Richard lay on the floor clutching his shoulder.

He looked at Victor with pure hatred.

Victor looked back.

“You lose.”

Richard smiled through the pain.

“No.”

Victor frowned.

Richard looked toward the timer.

May you like

00:05:12.

“You still have to choose what survives.”
