Chapter 2 - The Society Snake

Ten months earlier, Elena had been nothing more than an inconvenient obstacle in the Howard family's pristine world. When Julian Howard, the thirty-two-year-old heir to the multi-million-dollar Howard Logistics empire, married an elementary school teacher from South Boston, the high-society circles treated it like a scandal.

"She trapped him," Evelyn Howard had told the ladies at the country club luncheon, sipping vintage champagne. "A girl from nowhere with nothing to her name, clutching onto my son's coat-tails."

Then came Vanessa Moore.

Vanessa was Julian’s childhood sweetheart, the daughter of a prominent real estate tycoon whose family had quietly gone bankrupt five years prior. She possessed sharp cheekbones, honey-blonde hair, and a ruthless hunger for the lifestyle she believed was stolen from her. When she re-entered Julian’s life under the guise of an executive corporate consultant, Julian didn’t stand a chance.

Within six months, Vanessa had moved into the estate’s west guest wing. She subtly replaced the household staff with her own loyal hires, orchestrated Julian’s business calendar, and dripped poison into Evelyn’s ear at every turn.

"Look at her, Julian," Vanessa would murmur late at night in his private study, leaning over his leather desk until her perfume filled his head. "She doesn't belong here. She embarrassed you at the charity gala with her cheap dress. She’s using your family name to pay off her brother’s old medical debts. You deserve a partner who knows how to hold real power."

Julian, spineless and blinded by old nostalgia, drifted further and further from his pregnant wife. He stopped coming home for dinner. He stopped attending prenatal appointments. He barely looked Elena in the eye.

Elena noticed everything. She saw the scarlet lipstick marks on Julian's collars, the smug smirks Vanessa shot her across the dining table, and the quiet cruelty from Evelyn, who began locking the family silver away whenever Elena entered the room.

Elena had stayed silent. But she hadn’t stayed idle.
