Chapter 13 - The Plea Bargain

Two weeks later, Vanessa Moore sat in an orange jumpsuit behind a bulletproof glass partition at the county detention facility. Her hair was greasy, her makeup gone, and her hands were locked to the metal table.
Her defense attorney sat next to her, looking exhausted.
On the other side of the glass sat Elena, wearing an elegant cream-colored coat, looking healthy, radiant, and completely in control.
"You think you won?" Vanessa sneered through the intercom phone, her teeth gritted. "Julian will get out on bail. My father has connections. I’ll take a five-year plea and come out with millions in foreign accounts."
Elena smiled, picking up her receiver.
"Your father was arrested at Miami International Airport trying to board a flight to Belize three hours ago," Elena said calmly. "The Swiss authorities froze all seven shell accounts this morning. Every penny you stole has been seized under the RICO Act."
Vanessa slammed the phone receiver against the metal counter. "You lying bitch!"
"And as for your five-year plea?" Elena continued, her voice crystal clear. "Detective Ruiz added two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of poisoning with intent to induce forced termination of a fetus, and aggravated assault. The District Attorney is seeking life without parole."

Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.
"Enjoy prison, Vanessa," Elena said, setting the receiver back on its cradle. She stood up, smoothed her coat, and walked away without looking back.
