Chapter 10 - The Medical Report

At Boston General Hospital, Elena sat upright on the examination bed.
The fetal monitor beeped in a steady, reassuring rhythm. Dr. Aris smiled warmly as she wiped the ultrasound gel off Elena’s abdomen.
"Baby's heart rate is a strong 145 beats per minute," Dr. Aris said. "The Kevlar support rig absorbed nearly eighty percent of the impact against the stairs. You have a minor contusion on your left hip, but your son is completely safe, Elena."
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath. For the first time in three weeks, the iron wall of composure she had built around herself cracked, and warm tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Thank God," she whispered, resting both hands over her baby.
The door clicked open. Detective Ruiz stepped inside, holding two paper coffee cups.
"How's the little guy?" he asked gently, handing her a decaf cup.
"He's a fighter," Elena said, wiping her face. "What did you find in her room?"
Ruiz pulled up a chair and sat down, a grim smile on his face. "You hit the jackpot, Elena. We found two burner phones, the receipt from the dark web vendor where she bought the misoprostol, and an encrypted hard drive."

"Did your cyber team crack it?"
"They didn't even have to try hard," Ruiz replied. "Her password was Julian’s birthday. And what’s inside is going to put half the Howard Logistics board behind bars."
