CHAPTER 15 — THE LAST DOOR OUT

Ryan lay near the railing.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Clara rushed toward him while Sarah lifted Lily.
Ryan’s eyes opened.
“Vest.”
He coughed.
“The bullet hit the vest.”
Clara helped him sit up.
“You could have said that sooner.”
“I was unconscious.”
Ethan remained on the floor, holding Noah.
Gabriel pressed one hand against the wound in his side.
Olivia moved to help him.
“I can walk.”
“You have a knife wound.”
“I’ve had worse.”
“That doesn’t make this fine.”
The transmission reached twelve percent.
Mercer tore open a side panel beneath the core.
William grabbed him.
“Stop!”
“I can isolate the primary drive.”
“You’ll trigger the thermal purge.”
“It already triggered!”
Mercer ripped out a cable.
Electricity arced across the panel.
He was thrown backward.
The transmission stopped.
ARCHIVE DISTRIBUTION PAUSED: 14%.
Sarah stared at the screen.
“That isn’t enough.”
“What was transmitted?” Ryan asked.
“Probably index files, names, financial records.”
“Evidence?”
“Some.”
“But not the correction,” Olivia said.
Sarah shook her head.
“That was stored deeper.”
William looked toward the interrupted progress.
Then laughed.
“You failed.”
Clara turned toward him.
“Fourteen percent is enough to bring police, reporters and governments to every Blackridge site.”
“Without context, the files will look fabricated.”
Ryan dragged himself upright.
“Not when they match bank records, missing-person reports and hospital data.”
William’s smile remained.
“You think Blackridge exists in one country?”
“No.”
Ryan looked at the rows of children.
“But secrets spread faster than organizations can bury them.”
Margaret’s image flickered.
“Manual restoration possible.”
Sarah moved toward the screen.
“How?”
“Living lineage must enter the core.”
William’s face sharpened.
“No one enters.”
A narrow section of the black machine opened.
Inside was a chamber large enough for one adult.
Cables hung from the ceiling.
Gabriel immediately understood.
“I’ll do it.”
Clara looked at him.
“No.”
“It needs the active expression.”
“It said living lineage, not you.”
“The connection is strongest in me.”
Olivia grabbed his arm.
“You don’t know what it will do.”
“I know what happens if we leave.”
The sleeping children’s chambers continued filling.
The exit doors were still sealed.
Core failure in seven minutes.
Gabriel looked toward Ethan.
“Take Noah.”
Ethan held the boy closer.
Gabriel then looked at Clara.
“Take Lily.”
Clara stared at him.
“You don’t get to introduce yourself as our brother and die an hour later.”
A faint smile touched his face.
“I was your brother before you knew my name.”
Olivia stepped between Gabriel and the core.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Liv.”
“No.”
“You heard Mother.”
“I heard her apologize for sacrificing your life.”
“This is different.”
“It always sounds different when someone wants you to bleed.”
Gabriel’s face tightened.
Olivia placed her hand against his cheek.
“We just found you.”
He closed his eyes.
The touch nearly broke him.
Then Noah approached.
The boy looked at Gabriel’s wound.
“Are you really my father?”
Ethan looked away.
Gabriel opened his eyes.
“Biologically.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means Blackridge used part of me to create you.”
Noah considered this.
“Is Ethan still my dad?”
Gabriel looked toward Ethan.
Ethan’s face held fear.
Not of losing Noah to Blackridge.
Of losing him to the truth.
Gabriel knelt despite the pain.
“A father is the man who stays when staying is difficult.”
Noah looked at Ethan.
Gabriel continued.
“Ethan made terrible choices.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“But he jumped into the water after you.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
Gabriel said, “You can have more than one person who loves you.”
Noah wrapped his arms around Gabriel’s neck.
Gabriel froze.
Then embraced him carefully.
The transmission remained stalled.
Core failure in six minutes.
Gabriel stood.
“I have to go.”
Noah caught his hand.
“Come back.”
Gabriel looked at Clara.
At Olivia.
At Lily.
At Ethan.
“I will try.”
He entered the core chamber.
The door sealed around him.
Cables descended.
One attached behind his scar.
Another to his chest.
Gabriel’s body arched.
Olivia struck the glass.
“Gabriel!”
The machine activated.
His memories flooded the screens.
A baby under surgical lights.
Margaret screaming.
William holding a blood-covered infant as though displaying an invention.
Gabriel at three years old, locked in a transparent room.
Gabriel at six, watching nurses draw Olivia’s blood.
Gabriel at nine, carrying a smaller child away from a fire.
Gabriel at fourteen, chained to a wall.
Gabriel at seventeen, escaping through a tunnel while alarms screamed.
Gabriel finding Margaret near the river.
Her hands on his face.
Her voice saying, “Run.”
Then gunfire.
Gabriel waking alone.
The screens changed.
LINEAGE RESTORATION ACCEPTED.
The transmission restarted.
Fifteen percent.
Twenty.
Twenty-eight.
Gabriel screamed inside the chamber.
Clara felt his pain through the connection.
It was not only physical.
The machine was pulling every memory from him.
Using him as a bridge.
Olivia pressed both hands against the glass.
“Let him out!”
Sarah examined the controls.
“Not until the correction is transmitted.”
“How long?”
“Four minutes.”
“The core fails in five.”
William moved toward the machine.
Ryan aimed at him.
“Sit down.”
William raised both hands.
“You need me.”
“No one needs you.”
“You don’t know the upper exit code.”
Daniel laughed from where Sarah had restrained him.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
William’s expression changed.
Daniel smiled.
“You should have changed it after I stopped fearing you.”
Ryan motioned toward him.
“Give us the code.”
“Release me.”
“No.”
“Then drown.”
Sarah pressed her weapon against Daniel’s neck.
“You spent your life pretending cruelty was intelligence.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You spent yours pretending Margaret loved you.”
Sarah’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Clara stopped her.
“Sarah.”
Daniel smiled.
Clara moved closer.
“You want the archive released.”
“I want Blackridge destroyed.”
“Then give us the code.”
“You will protect William from me.”
“No.”
Clara looked at William.
“I won’t protect him from the truth.”
Daniel’s expression shifted.
Clara continued.
“The archive contains your file too.”
His smile vanished.
“Everything he did to you.”
Daniel stared toward the transmission.
Forty-one percent.
“All the records?”
“Yes.”
“Even Batch Twenty-Three?”
Sarah nodded.
Daniel looked at William.
For years, he had served the man who transformed him into a weapon.
Perhaps because he believed the alternative was being forgotten.
Clara understood that fear.
Blackridge had taught every child the same lie.
If their suffering did not create something important, then it had been meaningless.
Daniel gave Ryan the code.
“Seven-one-nine-four-nine.”
Ryan entered it into a wall panel.
UPPER EVACUATION ROUTE UNLOCKED.
A door opened above the highest platform.
Stairs led toward darkness.
Sarah began releasing the sleeping children from their chambers.
Some were toddlers.
Others teenagers.
Many could barely stand.
Olivia helped them onto the stairs.
Ethan carried Noah.
Clara held Lily.
Ryan supported two boys at once.
Daniel remained restrained.
Clara looked at him.
“Are there more children in this facility?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Eastern wing.”
“The flood already reached it.”
“Then they’re dead.”
Sarah slapped him.
Daniel barely reacted.
Clara closed her eyes.
Dozens of voices still lived inside her mind.
Some from the chambers.
Some farther away.
Fainter.
Terrified.
“They’re alive.”
Daniel stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“I hear them.”
Olivia stopped.
“So do I.”
Eight voices.
East.
Below the nursery.
Gabriel’s voice entered their minds through the machine.
Weak.
I can open their doors.
Clara looked toward the core.
Do it.
The transmission reached sixty percent.
Emergency locks opened throughout the facility.
A group of children appeared at the far tunnel entrance, water around their chests.
The oldest girl carried a toddler.
Ryan rushed toward them.
Sarah led the first rescued group upstairs.
The core timer reached three minutes.
William moved backward toward the evacuation stairs.
Clara blocked him.
“Where are you going?”
His expression remained calm.
“With the survivors.”
“No.”
“You cannot leave me here.”
Clara looked at the children climbing past him.
“You left hundreds of them in rooms like this.”
“I can identify every remaining Blackridge facility.”
Ryan approached.
“Then you’ll do it in custody.”
William looked toward the core.
“Ninety percent is required for global replication of the correction.”
The screen showed seventy-one.
“You don’t have enough time.”
Gabriel screamed again.
The machine pulled harder.
Blood ran from his nose.
Olivia rushed back down the stairs.
“I’m not leaving him.”
Clara handed Lily to Sarah.
“Take her.”
Lily grabbed her.
“You promised.”
“I promised they wouldn’t take you.”
“Promise you’ll come back.”
Clara looked at the failing core.
“I promise I will fight to.”
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
Clara kissed her forehead.
“But it’s the truth.”
Sarah carried Lily upward.
Clara joined Olivia at the core.
The chamber door would not open.
Gabriel looked at them through the glass.
His lips moved.
Go.
Olivia shook her head.
No.
The archive needs one bridge.
Clara pressed her hand against the glass.
You said you’d try to come back.
Gabriel smiled weakly.
I am trying.
The transmission reached eighty percent.
Core failure in ninety seconds.
Mercer suddenly grabbed Daniel.
He pressed a stolen blade against Daniel’s throat.
“Open the extraction port.”
Daniel laughed.
“You’re going to copy the research while the room explodes?”
“Thirty years of work will not disappear.”
“You never cared about saving lives.”
Mercer’s eyes burned.
“I cared about achieving what no one else could.”
Daniel drove his head backward into Mercer’s face.
Mercer stumbled.
Daniel seized his arm.
The two struggled near the edge.
William moved to help Mercer.
Ethan blocked him.
William stared.
“You?”
Ethan’s face was exhausted.
Bleeding.
But steady.
“You taught me fear was stronger than love.”
He looked toward Noah climbing the stairs.
“You were wrong.”
William struck him.
Ethan fell.
William reached for the evacuation route.
Noah saw him.
“Ethan!”
The boy ran back down.
William grabbed Noah and pulled him against his body.
Gabriel saw it from inside the core.
His heart rate spiked.
The machine alarms intensified.
William held a blade against Noah.
“Stop the transmission.”
Clara aimed Mercer’s dropped gun.
“Let him go.”
“Order Gabriel to disconnect.”
“He can’t.”
“Then the boy dies.”
Ethan stood slowly.
“No.”
William looked at him.
“You failed every person you tried to protect.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You’re right.”
“Stay back.”
“I failed Olivia.”
Another step.
“I failed Margaret.”
“Stop.”
“I failed Noah for years.”
Ethan looked at the child.
“But not now.”
He rushed William.
The blade moved.
Ethan caught it with his bare hand.
William cut across his palm, but Ethan did not release him.
Noah slipped free.
Clara pulled the boy away.
Ethan and William crashed into the railing.
The transmission reached ninety percent.
Core failure in thirty seconds.
Mercer ran toward the machine.
Daniel grabbed his coat.
Mercer pulled away.
The damaged railing broke.
Both men fell into the black water below.
William looked down.
For the first time, real fear entered his face.
Ethan held him against the broken edge.
“Clara!”
She looked at him.
“Get Gabriel out.”
“The door is sealed.”
“The red lever behind the panel.”
Clara found it.
She pulled.
The core chamber opened.
Gabriel collapsed into Olivia’s arms.
The transmission reached ninety-four percent.
CORRECTION PACKAGE COMPLETE.
Clara dragged Gabriel toward the stairs.
“Move!”
William grabbed Ethan’s injured hand.
“Help me.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You buried Margaret.”
“You helped me.”
“I know.”
William’s fingers slipped.
Ethan caught his wrist.
For one second, he could save him.
William looked relieved.
Then he smiled.
“You were always mine.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“No.”
He released him.
William fell into the black water.
The core timer reached five seconds.
Ethan ran.
The siblings carried Gabriel up the stairs.
Ryan pushed the final children through the upper door.
The blast struck as Clara crossed the threshold.
The floor rose beneath them.
White fire filled the chamber.
May you like
The door slammed shut.
Everything went black.
