CHAPTER 1 — THE HAND THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE MOVED

The hand twitched again.
Not because of the coffin shifting.
Not because Clara imagined it.
It moved.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
A pale hand pushed against the shattered wood from inside the coffin, fingers trembling as if struggling through an impossible nightmare.
Every scream inside the chapel blended into one deafening roar.
Someone dropped to their knees and began praying.
Another guest bolted for the exit, crashing into rows of white chairs.
The priest crossed himself repeatedly.
"My God..." he whispered. "That's impossible."
Clara couldn't hear any of them.
Her entire world narrowed to that hand.
"Olivia..." she breathed.
The folded letter lay beside the broken lid, stained by splinters of fresh wood.
Without thinking, Clara reached for it.
"Don't touch that!"
Ethan lunged toward her.
His voice cracked with a panic Clara had never heard before.
She pulled the letter away before he could grab it.
"Give it to me!"
"No."
Her answer came without hesitation.
His eyes widened.
For one brief second, Clara saw something she hadn't noticed during the entire funeral.
Fear.
Not grief.
Not shock.
Pure, desperate fear.
"What are you hiding?" she asked.
"I'm trying to protect you."
"From my dead sister?"
Before Ethan could answer, another scraping sound echoed from inside the coffin.
SCRAAAAPE...
The hand gripped the broken edge.
Then another hand appeared.
A woman near the front row fainted instantly.
Guests stumbled backward over one another, desperate to get away.
The funeral director shouted for everyone to leave.
But Clara couldn't move.
The coffin lid shifted another inch.
A weak gasp drifted into the chapel.
Not loud.
Barely audible.
But unmistakably human.
"She's breathing!"
Someone screamed the words.
Chaos exploded.
Two paramedics rushed through the chapel doors less than three minutes later.
No one had waited outside.
Someone had already called 911 the moment the coffin cracked.
They carefully removed the shattered lid completely.
The entire chapel fell silent.
Inside lay Olivia Bennett.
Her skin was ghostly pale.
Dark bruises circled her wrists.
Tiny scratches covered her fingertips.
Her lips trembled as she struggled for air.
She wasn't dead.
She had never been dead.
"Oh my God..."
Clara collapsed beside the coffin, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Liv..."
Olivia slowly opened swollen eyes.
They drifted across the room.
Searching.
Ignoring everyone else.
Until they found Clara.
Tears slid down both sisters' faces.
Olivia's lips barely moved.
"...I'm...sorry..."
Clara grabbed her sister's freezing hand.
"No."
Her voice broke.
"You don't apologize."
Olivia squeezed her fingers with the last strength she had.
Then she whispered something almost too quiet to hear.
"...don't...trust..."
Her eyes shifted.
Past Clara.
Toward Ethan.
Clara slowly turned.
Ethan stood frozen several feet away.
His face had become completely expressionless.
Then—
He ran.
"Ethan!"
Several guests shouted after him.
He shoved people aside and sprinted toward the chapel entrance.
One of the paramedics looked up.
"Stop him!"
Nobody reacted quickly enough.
The heavy wooden doors slammed shut behind him.
Outside...
Rain had started falling.
Ethan fumbled for his car keys with shaking hands.
"Come on..."
His fingers refused to cooperate.
Behind him...
The chapel doors burst open.
"ETHAN!"
Clara's voice echoed across the cemetery.
He looked back.
She was running through the rain.
Still holding Olivia's letter.
He jumped into his black SUV.
The engine roared alive.
His tires spun across the wet pavement.
By the time Clara reached the parking lot...
He was gone.
Leaving nothing behind except black tire marks disappearing into the storm.
Clara stared after him.
Then looked down at the folded letter still clutched in her hand.
The paper was sealed.
Across the front, in Olivia's unmistakable handwriting, were seven words.
Only Clara must read this. Alone.
Clara's heartbeat doubled.
Because Olivia had supposedly died three days earlier.
How could she have written it?
And more importantly...
Why had Ethan been so desperate to keep anyone from seeing it?
She carefully broke the seal.
Before she could unfold the first page—
A trembling voice called behind her.
"Don't..."
Clara spun around.
Olivia had somehow managed to sit upright inside the ambulance.
An oxygen mask covered part of her face.
She lifted one shaking finger toward the letter.
"...not...here..."
Then she lost consciousness.
The monitor beside her erupted into frantic alarms.
"She's crashing!"
The paramedics slammed the ambulance doors shut.
Seconds later, the siren wailed through the cemetery as the vehicle sped toward St. Mary's Medical Center.
Clara stood alone in the rain.
The unopened pages trembled in her hands.
She suddenly realized...
Someone else was watching her.
From beneath a black umbrella near the cemetery gates.
A tall man.
Dark overcoat.
Gray gloves.
He never moved.
Never spoke.
He simply watched Clara...
Until she looked directly at him.
Then he smiled.
May you like
Turned around.
And disappeared into the rain.
