CHAPTER 12 — THE GRAVE BENEATH THE RIVER

Ethan did not deny it.
That was worse than any explanation.
Olivia stepped backward.
“You buried my mother alive?”
“No.”
Daniel laughed from the floor.
“Not technically.”
Ryan tightened the restraints around his wrists.
“Stop talking.”
Daniel looked up at him.
“You want the truth, Detective?”
“I want you silent.”
“The truth is why none of you will leave this facility alive.”
Sarah struck him across the face with the back of her hand.
“Where is William?”
Daniel smiled.
“Preparing the river.”
Gabriel looked at Sarah.
“What does that mean?”
Her face changed.
“The flood chamber.”
Ryan turned.
“What flood chamber?”
“This facility connects to the old storm tunnels beneath the chapel. Margaret used them to move people out.”
Sarah looked toward Daniel.
“If William opens the river gate, every lower level fills within minutes.”
Clara held Lily closer.
“Then we move now.”
Olivia stepped toward Ethan.
“First he tells me.”
“Liv—”
“Tell me what happened to Mom.”
Ethan looked at the floor.
“I was there the night William caught her.”
Clara’s anger surged.
“How old were you?”
“Twenty-two.”
“You said Margaret recruited you.”
“She did.”
“Then what?”
“William discovered she had been moving children out of the program.”
Ethan swallowed.
“He ordered me to follow her.”
“And you did.”
“I warned her.”
Daniel laughed again.
“You watched.”
Ethan’s voice broke.
“I warned her!”
Olivia stared at him.
“What did William do?”
“He put her in a transport coffin.”
Clara felt the chapel close around her again.
The white coffin.
Olivia’s bruised hands.
The air inside running out.
A method repeated because it had worked before.
Ethan continued.
“William wanted to know where Gabriel had gone. Margaret refused to speak.”
“So he buried her?” Olivia asked.
“Near the river tunnel.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
The word barely came out.
Olivia slapped him.
The sound echoed.
Ethan did not defend himself.
She struck him again.
Ryan stepped forward, but Clara raised one hand.
Let her.
Olivia’s voice trembled with fury.
“You stood there?”
“I was supposed to confirm the burial.”
“You watched them close the lid.”
“Yes.”
“You watched my mother suffocate.”
“No.”
Ethan looked at Sarah.
“I came back.”
Sarah’s expression remained hard.
“When?”
“After William left.”
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t trust anyone.”
“You trusted yourself?”
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“I dug her out.”
The room went silent.
Clara’s anger faltered.
“She was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Then Sarah said she died saving Gabriel.”
“She did later.”
Sarah stared at Ethan.
“What happened after you opened the coffin?”
“I took Margaret to the river tunnel. She could barely breathe.”
His voice shook.
“She told me Gabriel was still nearby. William had sent men after him.”
Gabriel’s face changed.
Ethan looked at him.
“She made me choose.”
“Between what?”
“Taking her to a hospital or going after you.”
Gabriel went still.
“What did you choose?”
Ethan looked ashamed.
“You.”
Clara understood.
Margaret had survived the coffin.
But not the delay.
Ethan had left her bleeding and struggling for air to find Gabriel.
“Did you find him?” Clara asked.
“No.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Ethan continued.
“When I returned, Margaret was gone.”
Sarah’s expression shifted.
“She found me.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
Sarah looked at Gabriel.
“She told me where you were heading. Then she collapsed.”
Gabriel whispered, “Was she conscious?”
“For a few minutes.”
“What did she say?”
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“She said she had never stopped choosing you.”
Gabriel turned away.
His shoulders shook once.
Only once.
Then the emotion disappeared beneath control.
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“You knew she survived the coffin.”
“Yes.”
“Then when they did the same thing to me…”
“I knew the sedative window.”
His eyes met hers.
“I changed the dosage and delayed the burial team.”
“You hoped Clara would hear me.”
“I knew she might.”
Clara stared at him.
“You knew about our connection?”
“Margaret suspected it.”
“So the letter in the coffin?”
“I put it there.”
Olivia frowned.
“I wrote it.”
“You wrote six letters.”
Clara remembered William holding an identical envelope.
“There were more.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“You kept changing the hiding place because you thought Mercer was searching the apartment.”
“He was.”
“I found the letters and moved them.”
“Why put one in the coffin?”
“Because if Clara heard you, she would break it open.”
Clara’s anger returned.
“And if I didn’t?”
Ethan had no answer.
Olivia looked at him with devastation.
“You gambled my life on something none of us understood.”
“Yes.”
“You could have called the police.”
“William controlled the medical examiner, the funeral director, half the security team.”
“You could have told Clara.”
“He was watching her.”
“You could have done something else.”
“I know.”
Olivia’s eyes filled.
“You always know after.”
The building trembled.
A low roar rolled through the walls.
Sarah turned toward the corridor.
“The river gate.”
Water struck somewhere below them.
Daniel smiled.
“Too late.”
Ryan pulled him upright.
“You’re coming with us.”
Daniel laughed.
“You need me.”
“For what?”
“The upper door uses my blood.”
Sarah swore.
“William changed the access system.”
Water began rushing beneath the nursery floor.
Lily clung to Clara.
“What’s happening?”
“We’re leaving.”
Sarah opened the hidden wall.
A narrow tunnel descended into darkness.
“That leads to the river chamber,” she said.
Ryan looked at the rising water.
“Why go lower?”
“Because the upper exits are already sealed. The river tunnel is the only route outside.”
Gabriel lifted Olivia again despite her protests.
Ryan pushed Daniel ahead.
Ethan followed.
Clara carried Lily.
They entered the tunnel.
The wall closed behind them.
The passage was barely wide enough for one person.
Water reached Clara’s ankles within minutes.
Then her calves.
Lily wrapped both arms around her neck.
“Don’t drop me.”
“I won’t.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Ahead, Daniel stumbled.
Ryan shoved him forward.
“Keep moving.”
“You think William doesn’t know this route?”
“Then why are you nervous?”
Daniel said nothing.
The water rose to Clara’s knees.
The roar grew louder.
Gabriel spoke into her mind.
He’s leading us wrong.
Clara looked ahead.
Daniel had taken three turns without hesitation.
Sarah followed him, but uncertainty had entered her face.
Clara called out.
“Stop.”
Ryan turned.
“What?”
“Daniel knows where we’re going too well.”
Daniel smiled.
“I grew up here.”
Sarah looked at the wall markings.
Then cursed.
“This isn’t the river exit.”
“Where does it lead?” Clara asked.
“The central flood chamber.”
Ryan slammed Daniel against the wall.
“You did this deliberately.”
Daniel laughed.
“The upper door needs my blood.”
His eyes moved toward Gabriel.
“But the river chamber needs his.”
Gabriel stopped.
Daniel continued.
“William wants all three siblings at the original gate.”
Clara felt Olivia’s fear.
“What original gate?”
Sarah looked at the rising water.
“The first lab.”
“Batch Seventeen?”
“Yes.”
The tunnel opened into a massive underground chamber.
Steel platforms crossed above black water.
At the far end stood a circular vault door marked with the same split mountain symbol.
Three recessed handprints were embedded in its center.
A.
B.
C.
Clara understood.
Three children.
Three biological keys.
William stood on the upper platform.
Mercer beside him.
Noah was tied to a chair.
A clear cylinder stood nearby.
Inside it floated another child.
A teenage girl.
Unconscious.
Crescent scar behind her ear.
Olivia gasped.
“Who is she?”
William smiled down at them.
“The embryo Ethan believed failed.”
Clara stared.
“There were four children?”
“No.”
William rested one hand on the cylinder.
“There were always more.”
Behind him, rows of lights activated.
Dozens of glass chambers emerged from the darkness.
Some empty.
Some containing preserved embryos.
Others containing children.
Alive.
Sleeping.
Waiting.
Lily buried her face against Clara.
Gabriel’s rage hit Clara’s mind like fire.
William spread his arms.
“Welcome home.”
Ryan aimed his weapon upward.
“Release the boy.”
William pressed a control.
The platform beneath Noah shifted over the water.
“One mistake and he falls.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Noah!”
The boy lifted his head.
“Dad?”
The single word broke Ethan.
Noah had denied Ethan was his father.
Yet in fear, he called for him.
William smiled.
“Love is such an adaptable instrument.”
Gabriel looked at the vault door.
“What is inside?”
“The final archive.”
“Destroy it.”
William’s smile faded.
“I intend to open it.”
“With us.”
“With your blood.”
The water reached Clara’s waist.
Sarah looked toward the chamber walls.
“We have less than ten minutes before this room floods.”
William nodded.
“Then choose quickly.”
“Choose what?” Olivia asked.
William pointed toward the three handprints.
“All three of you place your hands on the gate.”
“And then?”
“The archive opens. The river gate closes. Everyone survives.”
Gabriel stared at him.
“What’s the trap?”
“If any one of you refuses, the chamber floods.”
Clara looked toward the sleeping children.
“And they drown.”
“Yes.”
Ryan shouted, “Don’t do it. He needs whatever is inside.”
William looked at him.
“Detective, inside that vault is every record, every treatment, every genetic sequence, every name connected to Blackridge.”
Clara’s heart pounded.
Evidence.
Enough to destroy the organization.
Enough to expose everything.
But William wanted it too.
Gabriel looked at Clara.
He can’t open it without us.
Olivia answered inside their minds.
Then we open it and destroy him afterward.
Clara stared at the three handprints.
He expects that.
Gabriel looked toward the cylinder holding the teenage girl.
The archive may contain a release system for the children.
The water rose higher.
Noah began crying.
Ethan moved toward the stairs leading to him.
Mercer aimed a gun.
“Another step and the boy falls.”
Ethan stopped.
Clara handed Lily to Sarah.
“Keep her above the water.”
Lily grabbed Clara’s shirt.
“No.”
“I’m right here.”
“Don’t go.”
Clara kissed her forehead.
“I made you a promise.”
She turned toward the vault.
Olivia moved beside her.
Gabriel followed.
The three siblings stood before the handprints.
William watched.
For the first time, true anticipation showed on his face.
Clara placed her palm over A.
Olivia over B.
Gabriel over C.
Nothing happened.
William frowned.
“Blood contact.”
Mercer threw down three small blades.
Gabriel picked one up.
He cut his palm.
Olivia did the same.
Clara hesitated only a second.
Then cut hers.
They pressed their bleeding hands against the metal.
The vault door trembled.
Locks shifted deep inside.
A mechanical voice spoke.
LINEAGE CONFIRMED.
The three siblings heard another voice inside their minds.
Not one another.
A woman.
Margaret.
My children, if you opened this door, William is still alive.
Clara froze.
Olivia’s eyes widened.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
A prerecorded neural signal.
Designed for them.
Margaret continued.
Do not let him enter.
The vault door began opening.
William stepped toward the stairs.
Clara looked at Gabriel.
He heard Margaret too.
So did Olivia.
Their mother’s final message filled all three minds.
The archive is not evidence.
The gap widened.
Cold white light poured out.
Inside stood a single black machine connected to hundreds of cables.
Margaret’s voice delivered the final warning.
It is a weapon.
William smiled.
And behind him, Ethan suddenly grabbed Mercer’s gun.
He fired once.
The bullet struck the control holding Noah’s platform.
The metal support snapped.
Noah’s chair dropped toward the black water.
Olivia screamed.
Gabriel lunged.
But Ethan jumped first.
May you like
He threw himself from the upper platform after the boy.
Both disappeared beneath the flooding river.
