CHAPTER 11 — ETHAN’S LAST LIE

Clara looked at Lily.

The child’s eyes were wide, but she did not cry.

That frightened Clara more than screaming would have.

Lily had learned silence.

Learned stillness.

Learned that panic gave adults another reason to punish her.

Clara kept her voice calm.

“Let her go.”

The woman’s blade stayed against Lily’s skin.

“Step back.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“You said Margaret chose you to protect the children.”

“She did.”

“Then prove it.”

The woman’s expression flickered.

Clara saw it.

A fracture.

Not confidence.

Conflict.

“You’re not here to hurt Lily,” Clara continued.

“You don’t know why I’m here.”

“You could have cut her already.”

Gabriel looked toward Clara.

She heard his thought.

Keep her talking.

Olivia slowly shifted to the right.

The woman noticed.

“Don’t move.”

Olivia stopped.

Clara focused on the woman.

“What is your name?”

No answer.

“Margaret knew your name.”

The woman’s jaw tightened.

“She didn’t call you a subject, did she?”

Silence.

“She trusted you.”

The blade trembled slightly.

“My name is Sarah.”

“Sarah what?”

“Vale.”

“Were you part of the program?”

“Yes.”

“Which batch?”

“Twenty-one.”

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“Female neural trials.”

Sarah looked at him.

“You remember.”

“I remember the screams.”

For a second, pain passed over Sarah’s face.

Clara continued.

“Margaret helped you escape.”

“She hid me.”

“Where?”

“In her place.”

Clara understood.

The woman in the laboratory had not been a random impersonator.

Margaret had created a decoy.

Someone whose medical records, appearance, and identity could confuse Blackridge.

“Why would she do that?”

“To keep William looking in the wrong direction.”

“Where did Margaret go?”

Sarah’s eyes hardened.

“I told you. She died.”

“How?”

“Saving Gabriel.”

Gabriel went still.

Sarah looked at him.

“You thought you escaped alone.”

“I remember Thomas.”

“Thomas got you out of the lower wing. Margaret took you through the river tunnel.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.”

“You were bleeding. Delirious.”

Sarah’s voice softened.

“She carried you half a mile.”

Gabriel’s breathing changed.

“She was with me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did I wake alone?”

“Because William found her.”

The room seemed to contract.

Sarah’s grip loosened slightly.

“She gave herself up so you could keep running.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Clara felt his grief explode through their connection.

For decades, he had believed Margaret abandoned him.

Then believed she survived.

Then saw her alive beneath the chapel.

Now Sarah was telling him the truth.

Margaret had died for him.

Clara asked, “How do you know?”

“I was there.”

Sarah’s voice broke.

“Margaret pushed me into the drainage chamber with the children. She told me not to move until the gunfire stopped.”

“Children?”

“Noah’s mother. Lena. Daniel. Two others.”

Clara looked toward the door.

“Daniel was a child then?”

“Thirteen.”

“He serves William now.”

“He thinks he serves the children.”

“He kidnapped Noah.”

“He believes bloodline reunification is the only way to destroy Blackridge.”

Gabriel stared at Sarah.

“And Lily?”

“Born into the new program.”

“Why did you tell us she was Clara’s?”

“Because she is.”

Sarah’s eyes moved toward Clara.

“Margaret stole the embryo before William could terminate it.”

Clara felt something tear open inside her.

Margaret had protected a granddaughter Clara never knew existed.

“Why raise her here?”

“This is not Blackridge’s main facility.”

Sarah nodded toward the walls.

“This place was Margaret’s resistance network.”

Olivia looked around.

“The restraints?”

“Left behind to make William believe it remained operational.”

“The children’s rooms?”

“Safe houses disguised as old treatment rooms.”

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“Then why threaten Lily?”

Sarah looked toward the ceiling camera.

“Because William is watching.”

Clara understood immediately.

The knife.

The performance.

The staged conflict.

Sarah had needed William to believe the family was breaking.

“Can he hear us?”

“Not anymore.”

Sarah lowered the blade.

Lily ran to Clara.

Clara caught her instinctively.

The child’s body fit against hers as though it had always known the shape.

Clara held her tightly.

Lily whispered, “Are you really my mother?”

Clara could not answer with certainty.

Not yet.

But she could answer the truth that mattered.

“I’m the woman who will never let them take you again.”

Lily buried her face against Clara.

Sarah moved toward a wall panel and pressed three hidden switches.

A section of the wall opened.

Inside were weapons, medical supplies, hard drives, and several passports.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You planned for this.”

“Margaret planned for everything.”

Sarah removed a small drive.

“This contains her final recordings.”

Clara stared.

“You said she died eleven years ago.”

“She did.”

“Then why create the illusion she was alive?”

“Because William feared her more than the police.”

Sarah handed Clara the drive.

“Margaret knew he would keep searching if he believed she survived.”

Olivia looked down at Lily.

“Did she know about the children?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

Sarah nodded.

“She spent years trying to find them.”

Clara’s voice shook.

“Did she know Ethan?”

Sarah’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

Gabriel noticed.

“What aren’t you telling us?”

Sarah looked toward Olivia.

“Ethan was not only recruited to study you.”

Olivia stiffened.

“What else?”

“He was Margaret’s contact inside Blackridge.”

No one moved.

Clara stared at Sarah.

“That makes no sense.”

“He was twenty-two when Margaret approached him.”

“William recruited him twelve years ago.”

“So did she.”

Sarah looked at Olivia.

“Ethan was meant to gain William’s trust, marry into the Bennett family, and protect the children from inside.”

Olivia’s face emptied.

“He never told me.”

“He couldn’t.”

“He buried me.”

Sarah’s eyes lowered.

“Because William discovered Ethan’s betrayal.”

“Then why is he still alive?”

“Because William believes fear can restore loyalty.”

Clara shook her head.

“No. Ethan had choices.”

“Yes.”

Sarah did not defend him.

“He failed many times.”

Olivia’s tears returned.

“Was any part of our marriage real?”

Sarah looked at her carefully.

“That answer belongs to Ethan.”

A loud impact struck the doors behind them.

Then another.

Ryan’s voice shouted from the corridor.

“Clara!”

Sarah opened the door.

Ryan entered first, followed by Ethan.

Ethan saw Olivia.

Then Lily.

Then Gabriel.

His face changed with every revelation.

Olivia stepped toward him.

“You knew Margaret.”

Ethan stopped.

Sarah said nothing.

Ethan looked at her.

“You told them.”

“They deserved the truth.”

Olivia’s voice was quiet.

“How long?”

Ethan swallowed.

“I met her before I met you.”

“Did she tell you to marry me?”

“At first, she told me to watch you.”

Olivia flinched.

“And then?”

“William ordered me to get closer.”

“So both sides used me.”

“No.”

“You did.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“I fell in love with you.”

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“After collecting my hair?”

“I stopped sending real samples.”

“After bringing me here?”

“I thought Sarah was still running the clinic.”

Sarah’s expression darkened.

“It had been compromised.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You disappeared.”

“Because Daniel found us.”

Olivia’s voice sharpened.

“You knew about Noah.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he was mine?”

“Not until two years ago.”

“And Lily?”

Ethan looked at the child.

“No.”

“Did you know another baby survived?”

“I knew an embryo had been transferred.”

“To whom?”

“Sarah.”

Everyone turned.

Sarah’s face went still.

Clara stared at her.

“You carried Lily?”

Sarah nodded.

Clara tightened her hold around the child.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Margaret told me not to.”

“She had no right.”

“No.”

Sarah’s voice was calm.

“She didn’t.”

“But she believed William would kill Lily if he knew which daughter supplied the egg.”

Gabriel looked toward Lily.

“Did Margaret know I was the father?”

“Yes.”

His face twisted.

“Why use my material?”

“She didn’t.”

Sarah looked at Mercer’s records drive.

“William did.”

Clara saw Gabriel’s anger rising.

Sarah continued.

“Margaret stole the embryo after fertilization. She could not undo what had been done.”

Lily looked between the adults.

“I don’t understand.”

Clara crouched before her.

“You don’t need to understand everything tonight.”

“Am I bad?”

The question shattered the room.

Clara held her face gently.

“No.”

“Daniel said I was made wrong.”

“He lied.”

“Am I your daughter?”

Clara looked at Olivia.

At Gabriel.

At Sarah.

No DNA test had been done.

The records could be false.

Everything Blackridge touched became uncertain.

But Lily needed an answer now.

“Yes,” Clara said.

Lily began to cry for the first time.

Not loudly.

She simply collapsed into Clara’s arms.

Ethan turned away.

Ryan watched him.

Then said, “We need to leave before William seals the upper levels.”

Sarah collected the drive.

“There’s a service tunnel beneath the nursery.”

A shot rang out from the corridor.

Ryan shoved Ethan aside.

Daniel entered with a weapon.

Blood stained his white coat.

His eyes looked almost feverish.

“No one leaves.”

Sarah raised her gun.

Daniel aimed at Lily.

Gabriel stepped between them.

Daniel smiled.

“B-17C.”

Gabriel stared at him.

“Move the weapon away from the child.”

“You don’t command me.”

“No.”

Gabriel’s voice lowered.

“But William trained you to fear me.”

Daniel’s smile faltered.

Gabriel took one step.

Daniel fired.

Gabriel twisted.

The bullet grazed his side.

He kept walking.

Daniel fired again.

The gun clicked.

Empty.

Gabriel reached him.

He did not strike.

He simply caught Daniel by the throat and lifted him against the wall.

Daniel clawed at his arm.

“You should have died.”

Gabriel looked into his eyes.

“So should you.”

He released him.

Daniel collapsed.

Ryan moved to restrain him.

Daniel began laughing.

Everyone stopped.

“What?” Ryan demanded.

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

“You still haven’t told them.”

Ethan’s face turned pale.

Olivia’s expression changed.

“What now?”

Daniel smiled through blood.

“The coffin.”

Clara felt cold.

“What about it?”

Daniel looked directly at Olivia.

“You weren’t the first person Ethan buried alive.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Olivia stared at him.

“Who was?”

May you like

Daniel answered.

“Margaret.”
