CHAPTER 13 — THE MAN WHO JUMPED AFTER HIS SON

Ethan hit the water three seconds after Noah.

The black current swallowed them both.

For one terrible moment, nothing moved beneath the surface except broken reflections from the emergency lights.

“Ethan!” Olivia screamed.

She released the vault door and ran toward the edge of the platform.

The mechanical voice immediately sounded above them.

LINEAGE CONTACT INTERRUPTED.
ARCHIVE SEALING.

The massive circular door began closing.

Gabriel grabbed Olivia’s arm.

“Stay on the plate.”

“My son is down there!”

“Ethan went after him.”

“And what if he can’t reach him?”

The water churned below.

Noah’s broken chair surfaced upside down.

The restraints were still attached.

But Noah was gone.

Olivia tried to pull away again.

Clara pressed her bleeding palm against the A panel.

“Liv, listen to me.”

“I can’t stand here while he drowns!”

“If we let this chamber seal, every child in those cylinders dies.”

Olivia looked toward the rows of sleeping children.

Water climbed around the lower glass chambers.

Several monitors began alarming.

Gabriel pressed his palm harder against the C plate.

“Ethan chose Noah.”

His voice shook despite his control.

“Now we choose the others.”

Olivia stared at the water.

Then she returned her palm to the B panel.

The vault stopped closing.

The mechanical locks reversed.

White light widened between the doors.

William watched from the upper platform.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Mercer grabbed his sleeve.

“You said the archive required continuous contact.”

“It does.”

“Then separate them.”

William’s eyes moved toward Daniel.

“Do it.”

Daniel remained restrained in Ryan’s grip near the lower platform.

He smiled faintly.

“You don’t command me anymore.”

William’s expression hardened.

“You exist because I allowed it.”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward the sleeping children.

“I exist because the ones you discarded kept each other alive.”

Ryan tightened his hold.

“Then help us.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You still think there is an ‘us’?”

“I think William plans to drown everyone in this room, including you.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Above them, Mercer moved toward the control panel.

Sarah raised her weapon.

“Step away from it.”

Mercer ignored her.

Sarah fired.

The bullet struck the railing beside his hand.

Mercer froze.

William stared down at her.

“Twenty-one.”

Sarah’s jaw tightened.

“My name is Sarah.”

“You had no name when we found you.”

“I had one before you took it.”

William looked almost amused.

“You still believe Margaret saved you.”

“She did.”

“She used you.”

“No.”

Sarah placed herself in front of Lily.

“She taught me that survival without choice is another kind of prison.”

William’s face darkened.

The water below exploded.

Ethan surfaced.

He had one arm around Noah’s chest.

The boy was unconscious.

“Ryan!” Ethan shouted.

Ryan released Daniel to Sarah and rushed toward the edge.

Ethan fought the current, but the flood system pulled him toward the intake gates beneath the platform.

Noah’s head slipped beneath the surface.

Ethan dragged him up again.

“I can’t reach the ladder!”

Gabriel looked at Clara.

She heard his thought before he spoke.

I have to leave the plate.

The door will seal.

Not if you hold all three.

Clara looked at the handprints.

They were spaced too far apart for one person.

Then Margaret’s recorded voice entered their minds again.

The lineage is not blood alone.

Clara looked toward Lily.

The child stood beside Sarah, staring at the vault.

A fourth mark had appeared beneath the three handprints.

Smaller.

Child-sized.

Lily whispered, “It’s calling me.”

Clara’s blood went cold.

“No.”

Lily stepped toward the vault.

Sarah caught her shoulder.

“Stay back.”

“But I can hear Grandma.”

Clara stared at her.

“You hear her voice?”

Lily nodded.

“She says the children can hold the door.”

William leaned over the railing.

“Bring the girl to the plate.”

Clara raised the gun toward him.

“Don’t speak to her.”

William smiled.

“She was designed for this.”

“She wasn’t designed for anything.”

“Clara, every cell in that child was selected.”

Lily looked up at Clara.

“Can I help Noah?”

Clara wanted to say no.

Wanted to carry her out of the chamber and never let another machine touch her.

But Ethan was weakening.

Noah remained motionless.

The sleeping children’s chambers were filling.

There was no safe choice.

Only the choice that might save the most lives.

Clara knelt before Lily.

“You touch the plate for ten seconds.”

“Okay.”

“If anything hurts, you pull away.”

“I’m not scared.”

Clara touched her cheek.

“You’re allowed to be.”

Lily walked toward the vault.

Sarah stayed beside her.

The child placed her small palm against the fourth mark.

The entire door flashed silver.

The mechanical voice changed.

SECOND-GENERATION LINEAGE CONFIRMED.

Clara felt the pressure beneath her hand disappear.

The vault no longer needed her contact.

Lily’s palm alone held the door open.

Gabriel pulled away from the C plate.

He dived into the water.

The current caught him immediately.

Unlike Ethan, Gabriel did not fight it.

He used it.

He disappeared beneath the surface, then emerged beside Ethan.

“Give him to me!”

Ethan looked at him.

For one second, the two men froze.

Gabriel was Noah’s biological father.

Ethan was the man Noah had called Dad.

Then Ethan pushed the boy into Gabriel’s arms.

“Take him.”

Gabriel wrapped Noah against his chest.

“What about you?”

“Go!”

A metal gate opened beneath the water.

The current intensified.

Ethan was dragged backward.

Gabriel caught his wrist.

Their arms locked.

Ethan looked up at him.

“Don’t let them make him hate himself.”

Gabriel tightened his grip.

“You tell him.”

“I may not get another chance.”

“You don’t get to die and leave us with your apologies.”

Ethan almost smiled.

“That sounds like Clara.”

Together, they fought toward the ladder.

Ryan leaned down and caught Noah’s hospital gown.

Sarah grabbed Ryan’s belt to keep him from falling.

They lifted the boy onto the platform.

Gabriel pushed Ethan toward the ladder.

Ethan caught the bottom rung.

Then a steel barrier slammed between them.

Gabriel was trapped on one side.

Ethan on the other.

The current pulled Ethan toward the flood intake.

“No!” Olivia screamed.

She ran toward the edge.

Ethan looked up at her.

Their eyes met across the rushing water.

He could not hear her over the alarms.

But Clara could feel Olivia’s thought.

Not a sentence.

A flood of memories.

Their wedding morning.

Ethan burning breakfast because he was nervous.

The night Olivia’s migraines became so severe she collapsed in the bathroom.

Ethan sitting outside the locked door for six hours.

His lies.

His secret phone.

His hand on the coffin.

His voice admitting he had been hired to enter her life.

Love and betrayal occupying the same space.

Olivia screamed his name again.

Ethan released the ladder.

The current took him.

Gabriel slammed both hands against the barrier.

“Open it!”

William watched from above.

“No.”

Ethan disappeared beneath the black water.

Olivia made a broken sound and dropped to her knees.

Then Noah coughed.

Water burst from his mouth.

Ryan rolled him onto his side.

The boy gasped.

“Dad…”

Olivia crawled toward him.

“I’m here.”

Noah’s eyes opened.

He looked around desperately.

“Where’s Ethan?”

Olivia could not answer.

Gabriel remained waist-deep behind the steel barrier.

He stared into the water where Ethan had vanished.

Then his head turned slightly.

Clara heard it too.

A faint heartbeat.

Slow.

Distant.

Beneath the platform.

He’s alive, Gabriel sent into her mind.

Clara looked toward the submerged machinery.

Where?

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Behind the intake wall.

William’s voice echoed across the chamber.

“The archive is open.”

The circular vault had fully separated.

White light illuminated the black machine inside.

Hundreds of cables extended from it into the walls, the chambers and the flood controls.

Mercer stared at it with religious awe.

“After thirty-two years.”

William descended the upper stairs.

Ryan raised his weapon.

“Stay where you are.”

William continued walking.

“You won’t shoot me while I control the children’s life support.”

“You don’t control it.”

William smiled.

“The archive does.”

He stepped onto the lower platform.

“And the archive recognizes me.”

Lily’s palm remained pressed against the fourth plate.

Clara moved beside her.

“Take your hand off.”

Lily tried.

Her palm did not move.

“Mom?”

Clara grabbed her wrist.

The skin around Lily’s fingers glowed faintly beneath the metal.

“She’s stuck.”

William approached.

“Not stuck.”

He looked at Lily with satisfaction.

“Connected.”

Clara aimed the gun at him.

“Release her.”

“I can’t.”

“You built this.”

“No.”

William’s gaze moved toward the black machine.

“Margaret did.”

Clara stared at him.

“You said the archive was yours.”

“The research was ours.”

William’s expression changed.

“But your mother redesigned the system after she escaped.”

Margaret’s voice entered Clara’s mind again.

This time weaker.

Fragmented.

Do not let William touch the core.

Gabriel shouted from behind the barrier.

“Clara!”

William lunged toward the machine.

Ryan fired.

The bullet struck William’s shoulder.

He staggered.

Mercer drew a pistol and shot Ryan in the chest.

Ryan fell backward.

Sarah fired at Mercer.

Mercer dropped behind the railing.

Gunshots shattered the lights.

Lily screamed.

Clara covered the child with her body.

The vault machine activated.

A pulse of white light tore through the chamber.

May you like

Every sleeping child opened their eyes at once.

And Clara heard all of them screaming inside her mind.
