Chapter 3 - THE DAUGHTER WHO CAME BACK

The next morning, every news channel in the country had the same headline.
STERLING EMPIRE SHAKEN BY SECRET DAUGHTER REVELATION.
For thirty years, Arthur Sterling had been known as a man who controlled everything.
Markets.
Companies.
People.
But now his entire world was collapsing.
Not because of a business enemy.
Not because of a financial disaster.
Because of a young woman who walked into a ballroom carrying an old photograph.
Maya sat alone inside a small apartment.
The television played quietly.
Reporters surrounded the Sterling mansion.
“Sources say Arthur Sterling may have a daughter from a relationship before his marriage…”
Maya turned the television off.
She hated seeing her life become entertainment.
Her mother had never wanted revenge.
She never wanted fame.
She only wanted Arthur to know.
That was all.
A knock came at the door.
Maya froze.
Nobody knew where she lived.
Slowly, she opened it.
Arthur Sterling stood outside.
No security.
No assistants.
No expensive suit.
Just an exhausted old man holding a small box.
Maya stared.
“What are you doing here?”
Arthur looked at the apartment.
Then back at her.
“I wanted to see where you grew up.”
Maya said nothing.
He held out the box.
“This belonged to your mother.”
Her breathing stopped.
“How did you get this?”
Arthur looked away.
“Because I kept it.”
Maya opened the box.
Inside was a small silver bracelet.
The same bracelet in the photograph.
Her mother had searched for it her entire life.
“She thought you threw it away.”
Arthur swallowed.
“I almost did.”
Almost.
That word hurt.
Maya closed the box.
“Why?”
Arthur looked at her.
And for the first time…
he stopped being a billionaire.
He became a father.
“Because I was twenty-two.”
“I was scared.”
“I had just started building my company.”
“My father told me a child would destroy everything.”
Maya’s eyes hardened.
“So you believed him.”
Arthur looked down.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised her.
“I made the worst mistake of my life.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Maya asked the question she had carried for years.
“Did you ever love my mother?”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
One word.
But it carried thirty years of regret.
“Then why did you leave?”
Arthur had no answer.
Because there was no answer good enough.
Maya turned away.
“You missed everything.”
“My first day of school.”
“My graduation.”
“My mother dying.”
Arthur’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“No.”
Maya shook her head.
“You don’t.”
“You can’t know.”
“You weren’t there.”
Arthur stood silently.
Because she was right.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Victoria.
He ignored it.
Seconds later, another call came.
His lawyer.
Arthur answered.
The moment he heard the voice…
his expression changed.
“What do you mean?”
Maya watched his face.
“What happened?”
Arthur slowly lowered the phone.
His voice was quiet.
“Someone leaked your mother’s medical records.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
“And they are saying…”
He looked at her.
“That you are not my daughter.”
The room went silent.
Maya felt the ground disappear beneath her.
Arthur stared at the woman he had just found.
The woman he had already lost once.
Because someone was trying to erase her again.
May you like
And this time…
they were willing to destroy everything to do it.
