Chapter 2 - THE SECRET BURIED FOR THIRTY YEARS

The ballroom remained frozen.
Nobody cared about the charity auction anymore.
Nobody cared about the cameras.
Nobody cared about the wealthy guests pretending not to listen.
Everyone wanted one answer.
Was Maya Torres telling the truth?
Victoria grabbed Arthur’s arm.
“Say something.”
Her voice was low.
Dangerously low.
Arthur didn’t look at her.
His eyes remained fixed on Maya.
The young woman standing across the room.
The daughter he never knew existed.
“I need to talk to her.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Arthur finally looked at her.
“What?”
Victoria forced a smile.
“She embarrassed you in front of everyone.”
“She attacked our family.”
“She is manipulating you.”
Maya lowered her eyes.
She expected this.
She had expected rejection.
She had expected anger.
But she had hoped, just once, that Arthur would recognize her.
Arthur slowly walked toward Maya.
The crowd separated.
Nobody dared stop him.
When he reached her, he looked at the photograph again.
“Where is your mother?”
Maya’s eyes became sad.
“She passed away six years ago.”
Arthur looked down.
For a moment, the billionaire disappeared.
There was only a man realizing he had lost thirty years with someone who was still alive.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Maya laughed softly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“She tried.”
Arthur looked up.
“What?”
“My mother wrote letters.”
“Hundreds of them.”
His face changed.
“Letters?”
Maya nodded.
“She sent them to your old office.”
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
Everyone turned.
Victoria’s perfect mask was breaking.
“Maya, whatever story you created, this is not the place.”
Maya looked at her.
“You knew.”
Victoria froze.
“What?”
“You knew about my mother.”
The entire room became quiet again.
Maya reached into her bag.
She pulled out several folded papers.
“My mother saved everything.”
“Every letter she sent.”
“Every message that was returned.”
Arthur took the papers.
His hands shook as he opened one.
The handwriting was familiar.
Very familiar.
Isabella’s handwriting.
The woman he loved before he chose his reputation.
Before he chose his family name.
Before he chose Victoria.
His eyes moved across the page.
Arthur,
I don’t want anything from you.
I don’t want your money.
I only want you to know that your daughter was born.
Her name is Maya.
She has your eyes.
Please don’t let her grow up believing her father never cared.
Arthur stopped reading.
His heart felt like it had been crushed.
He looked at Victoria.
She looked away.
That was the answer.
“You saw these.”
Victoria said nothing.
Arthur’s voice became colder.
“Didn’t you?”
Slowly…
Victoria lifted her chin.
“Yes.”
A shocked murmur moved through the crowd.
Arthur stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I protected you.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
But more terrifying than shouting.
“You protected yourself.”
Victoria’s face turned pale.
“You don’t understand.”
“I was your wife.”
“I was trying to save our family.”
Maya looked at Victoria.
“You destroyed mine.”
That sentence hit harder than the slap.
Victoria looked at her.
And for the first time…
She saw Maya not as a threat.
Not as a stranger.
But as the living proof of a secret she had buried.
Arthur folded the letter carefully.
Then he turned to the crowd.
“This event is over.”
Nobody moved.
The richest people in the city watched as Arthur Sterling walked away from his wife…
and toward the daughter he abandoned without knowing.
But before Maya followed him out…
Victoria whispered something.
Something only Maya heard.
“You think this changes everything?”
Maya stopped.
Victoria stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you just started.”
Maya looked back.
“What does that mean?”
Victoria smiled faintly.
Because she knew something Maya didn’t.
May you like
Arthur Sterling had secrets.
And some secrets were more dangerous than the truth.
