Chapter 8 - THE BOX ALEXANDER LEFT BEHIND
They reached the bank before sunrise.
Elena.
Adrian.
Catherine.
Marcus.
Natalie met them there with a court authorization.
The safe deposit box had not been opened in eleven years.
The manager placed it inside a private room.
Elena inserted Catherine’s key.
Adrian turned the second lock using a key hidden inside Alexander’s letter.
The box opened.
Inside were three objects.
A leather notebook.
A sealed envelope.
And an old digital recorder.
Elena picked up the recorder.
The battery was dead.
Marcus connected it to a portable power source.
A single audio file appeared.
Alexander Voss’s voice filled the room.
“If Elena and Adrian are hearing this together, then Victor failed to keep you apart.”
Nobody moved.
Alexander continued.
“Victor Lang believes power comes from controlling what people fear losing.”
“He is wrong.”
“Real power comes from knowing what you are willing to lose to protect what matters.”
Elena glanced at Adrian.
The recording continued.
“I discovered Victor’s network too late.”
“He compromised executives inside Voss Global and used company resources to build Monarch Capital.”
“I attempted to remove him.”
“He responded by threatening both of my children.”
Catherine closed her eyes.
Alexander’s voice became softer.
“Elena, I kept Adrian from you because I believed distance would protect you both.”
“I was wrong.”
“I created loneliness where there should have been family.”
Elena felt tears burning behind her eyes.
But she remained silent.
Then Alexander said something none of them expected.
“Damian Cross is not part of Victor’s original network.”
Elena looked at Marcus.
“Damian’s father was.”
The recording continued.
“Thomas Cross discovered Victor’s scheme and attempted to expose it.”
“He disappeared before he could.”
Damian had always claimed his father abandoned his family.
Elena suddenly understood.
Damian might have grown up believing a lie too.
The final part of the recording contained instructions.
Alexander had documented Victor’s transactions in the notebook.
But the most important evidence was stored elsewhere.
A private server.
The access sequence required Elena and Adrian together.
Two heirs.
Two authentication keys.
One final archive.
Marcus looked at Elena.
“If we access it, we may have enough to destroy Victor.”
Catherine shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Victor knows about the server.”
Elena frowned.
“How?”
“Because Alexander made one mistake.”
“What?”
“He told Victor it existed.”
Silence.
Catherine looked at Elena.
“He never told him where.”
Elena opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a handwritten address.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
“That’s our father’s old house.”
Elena looked at him.
The Voss family estate had been abandoned after Alexander’s death.
Elena had refused to sell it.
For eleven years, it had remained empty.
Or so she believed.
Marcus checked security records.
Then his expression changed.
“There was an entry at the estate yesterday.”
“Who?”
Marcus turned the screen around.
The security image showed Damian Cross entering through the rear gate.
Elena stared at it.

And if Alexander’s recording was correct, Damian was about to discover what really happened to his father.
