Chapter 1 - THE SIGNATURE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

By the time Elena Voss stepped into the private elevator, Damian Cross had lost access to almost everything he believed made him powerful.

His corporate accounts were frozen.

His company credentials had been revoked.

His private investment portfolio was locked.

Three properties were already under legal review.

And the board he had controlled through intimidation for nearly eight years was holding an emergency meeting without him.

But Elena knew something Damian did not.

His collapse had only exposed the surface.

The real problem was buried much deeper.

The elevator doors closed behind her.

Marcus Hale, Voss Global’s director of corporate security, stood beside her holding a black folder.

He did not speak until they reached the forty-second floor.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

“There’s something you need to see.”

His tone immediately caught her attention.

Marcus had spent twelve years handling corporate investigations.

He did not sound nervous easily.

Elena took the folder.

“What is it?”

“We finished the emergency audit on Cross Meridian.”

Cross Meridian was Damian’s flagship company.

Publicly, Damian had built it from nothing.

Privately, Elena knew Voss Global had supplied the credit lines, strategic partnerships, logistics infrastructure, and investment guarantees that allowed it to grow.

But she had never interfered with its daily operations.

Until now.

Elena opened the folder.

The first page contained a series of transfers.

Her eyes narrowed.

“These accounts aren’t on the quarterly reports.”

“No.”

“Where did the money go?”

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s the problem.”

Elena looked up.

“We don’t know.”

The elevator doors opened.

Elena walked directly toward her private conference room.

Her legal counsel, Natalie Brooks, was already waiting.

So were two forensic accountants.

A large screen displayed a complicated network of companies.

Some were familiar.

Others were not.

Natalie stood.

“We found seventeen shell corporations.”

Elena stopped.

“Connected to Damian?”

“Indirectly.”

Natalie touched the screen.

Lines appeared between the companies.

“Damian has been moving money through subsidiaries for at least four years.”

Elena’s expression remained calm.

“How much?”

The room went quiet.

Natalie finally answered.

“Potentially four hundred and eighty million dollars.”

Even Elena needed a second to absorb that number.

“From Voss-backed companies?”

“Some.”

Natalie changed the screen.

“But there’s something worse.”

A name appeared.

VOSS LEGACY TRUST.

Elena’s face hardened.

The Legacy Trust had been established by her father before his death.

It controlled long-term family assets and strategic voting rights.

Only three people were supposed to have authorization to interact with it.

Elena.

Her chief legal officer.

And the trustee.

Damian was not one of them.

Elena stepped closer to the screen.

“How did he get access?”

“We’re still determining that.”

Marcus placed another document on the table.

“But somebody inside Voss Global helped him.”

Elena slowly turned.

“An insider.”

“Yes.”

For the first time that day, the humiliation Damian had inflicted on her seemed almost irrelevant.

This was no longer about revenge.

Someone had been quietly attacking the foundation of her company.

And Damian might only be one piece of it.

Elena looked through the glass wall toward the city below.

“Where is Damian now?”

Marcus checked his phone.

“Still downstairs.”

“Keep him there.”

Marcus nodded.

Elena turned back toward Natalie.

“Find every person who authorized those transfers.”

“We’ve started.”

“And Natalie?”

“Yes?”

“Nobody outside this room knows about the Legacy Trust breach.”

Natalie understood immediately.

“You think the insider may still be inside the company.”

“I know they are.”

A notification appeared on Marcus’s phone.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

Elena asked.

Marcus looked at her.

“Damian just received a message.”

“From whom?”

“We don’t know.”

“What did it say?”

Marcus turned the screen toward her.

The intercepted message contained only six words.

SHE FOUND THE ACCOUNTS. SAY NOTHING.

Elena stared at it.

Then she slowly lifted her eyes.

May you like

Damian was not acting alone.

And whoever had warned him knew exactly what Elena was doing.
