Chapter 14 - THE LAST SECRET OF ALEXANDER VOSS

The recovered server changed everything.

Victor’s network stretched back twenty-seven years.

Payments.

Threats.

Secret contracts.

Recorded conversations.

The evidence against him became overwhelming.

But Elena found one final folder.

It carried her name.

ELENA — PERSONAL.

She opened it alone.

Inside was another recording from her father.

Alexander appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

“Elena.”

She sat completely still.

“If you found this, then you survived the thing I feared most.”

“You discovered what power does to people who believe they deserve it.”

Alexander paused.

“I spent years building Voss Global because I believed money could create security.”

“I was wrong.”

“Money creates options.”

“People create security.”

Elena felt her throat tighten.

“I kept secrets from you.”

“I kept your brother from you.”

“I allowed you to believe strength meant needing nobody.”

“That may be my greatest failure.”

A tear moved down Elena’s cheek.

She did not wipe it away.

Alexander continued.

“If Adrian is beside you, tell him I am sorry.”

“If Catherine is alive, tell her I never stopped loving her.”

“And if Victor is finally gone, do not spend your life protecting what I built.”

Elena frowned.

Alexander smiled.

“Build something better.”

The recording ended.

Elena remained in the dark room for a long time.

Then Adrian entered.

He saw her face.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He sat beside her.

“Me neither.”

Elena laughed quietly through her tears.

She played the recording again.

This time, Adrian watched.

When it ended, neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally Adrian said,

“So what happens to Voss Global?”

Elena looked at him.

“We change it.”

“How?”

“No more hidden ownership structures.”

“No more secret voting agreements.”

“No more one person controlling everything.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“Including you?”

“Including me.”

The following week, Elena returned to the boardroom.

This time, employees had representatives present.

Independent directors had been appointed.

The corrupted members were gone.

Elena stood before them.

“Voss Global will establish an employee equity trust.”

Whispers spread through the room.

“Ten percent of long-term ownership will be transferred into that trust.”

Natalie looked proud.

Adrian smiled.

Elena continued.

“Executive authority will also be divided.”

One director asked,

“Why would you voluntarily give away control?”

Elena thought about Damian.

Victor.

Her father.

And herself.

“Because an empire that survives only when one person controls it isn’t strong.”

She paused.

“It’s fragile.”

Hours later, Marcus entered her office.

“They found Victor.”

Elena stood.

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

“Trying to leave?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“He was trying to meet someone.”

“Who?”

Marcus handed her a photograph.

Elena stared at the face.

She recognized the man immediately.

Thomas Cross.

May you like

Damian’s father.

Alive.
